In 1988, Cher won the Best Actress Oscar for Moonstruck over Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Holly Hunter, and Sally Kirkland, cementing her place as one of the greatest pop culture icons of all time. In this video, I discuss her professional journey and how it ultimately culminated in an Oscar.

I loved the clips of CHER throughout her long career in show business. I think Tina Turner a long with CHER are the ONLY women who have been as famous as long and as relative still today as they were at their prime. CHER has had an impact on every aspect of American media. In 20 or 30 year's her life will be played out on the big screen I am sure long after were are all gone and a brand new generation will discover her work. Hopefully it will be a good film, casting etc..... and win lot's of awards.

I love the slightly critical comments about Meryl Streep getting nominated just for being Meryl Streep, independently of the actual performance. This happened quite a few times. She's a good actress but definitely not deserving of a nomination for every movie, specially compared to other great performers who don't get one. However, it's almost not possible to write something critical about Streep without some brain-washed people protest against it, since they see the world through the eyes of the media which always glorifies her unconditionally.

Sandy Weinhold Just because someone doesn't agree with you, doesn't mean they are brain-washed by the media.. Don't act like you are the only one who can analyze rationally.. People have brains to make their own analysis and stand by Meryl's well deserved nominations.. Your so called "love" for the critical comments against Meryl (yours is the only one on the comment section of this video, at the time of my comment) wasn't this apparent until she spoke against the President of US, which in itself speaks of your irrational thinking..

it's like you're not a Meryl Streep anti but on a side note sick of her being nominated every year (aka thinks she's overrated) lol
@joshv3585
@joshv3585 5 лет назад
I think she's a great actress, but most times than not her films are not great films. Her unwillingness to work with directors who would challenge her is her biggest mistake. But I can appreciate the diversity of her work, and when it works it works beautifully. I don't know why she was singled out. Many of her films have not been box office smashes, especially those she was nominated for. Many are modest hits, with a few blockbusters scattered throughout her career. I always wondered why her and not, say, Sigourney Weaver or Glenn Close from the same time Streep came into the scene, why did Streep garner so much praise and so much accolades from award groups. It's not as if she was everywhere in terms of publicity. Like Katherine Hepburn before I guess we just got use to her being around for so long that it would seem odd to shun her now. But no, her nominations for The Post, Florence Foster Jenkins, Julie and Julia, and Into the Woods were not warranted (the more recent of her nominations). She was fine in them, nothing against her work, but not worthy of a nomination.
@gauravw6947
@gauravw6947 5 лет назад
Josh V IMO, Weaver (despite being a great actress) hasn't been as versatile and consistent as Close or Streep.. Also, I feel Meryl deserved the nomination for The Post and Julie&Julia, infact she was more favoured to win for the latter than Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side.. And I also think that an actress at her age doesn't have much opportunities to choose her directors and when she gets that opportunity with a good role, she has worked with challenging directors like Mike Nichols and Spielberg..

I agree that all of the factors you mentioned conspired to make 1988 Cher’s moment, but there were other factors in favor of “Moonstruck” that year, including Olympia Dukakis’s presence (and ultimate Oscar win) as supporting actress, timed perfectly with her cousin Michael’s presidential campaign.

Be kind rewind did a great video on Olivia Coleman winning over Glenn close back in 2019 and went in depth on Glenn’s constant lost. The conclusion was Glenn went up against winners who won based on industry politics and popularity like Cher beating had to do with moonstruck marking Cher’s official moment as a legit movie star/serious actress, Jodie foster winning over Glenn and Meryl Streep in 1989 had to do with that year being Jodie successful transition from child star to adulthood actress.

I have no idea how you managed to access all these interviews and snippets of the oscars and news clippings, but this is such an amazingly well resourced video! I can't imagine either the difficulty of finding these bits of evidence today, or the amount that you have to sift through to find what you need for your arguments. This is a lot f work, WOW

Especially good commentary on this one---a year of many incredible performances. Your comment about being a huge Cher fan, yet acknowledging a should-have-won for Holly Hunter, is refreshingly honest. I personally was pro-Cher before it was fashionable (visualize a pimply teenage guy in the early Seventies, salivating over her appearances in the skimpiest costumes ever seen in prime time, while he tapes every episode of the 'Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour' on a little cheapo audiocassette recorder.) The Oscar competition was truly fierce--Glenn Close's turn into Crazytown is downright iconic--but Cher really nailed it as an Italian New York widow. The rest of the talented 'Moonstruck' cast, the story, and even the interiors of the Castorini house, truly resonate with any of us who have Italian backgrounds. It was a worthy win that year.

Some people feel this way about Jane Fonda winning for Klute; the year before she was nominated for "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" and feel she was given this award for Klute because she didn't win for "Horses." I feel this way about Paul Newman winning for "Color of Money," when the year before he gave a STUNNING performance for "The Verdict." Who won? Ben Kingsley for "Gandhi." Causes an argument for which is REAL acting, creating something from the ground up, or mimicry of a famous person?

Holly Hunter was phenomenal in Broadcast News. Moonstruck paved the way for the romantic comedy to become a box office juggernaut in later years. Films like When Harry Met Sally, Pretty Woman, Sleepless in Seattle, While You Were Sleeping etc. owe a lot to Moonstruck.
