Interesting trivia: When Anthony Harvey called Katharine Hepburn to tell her she won and would deliver her Oscar to her, she told him to deliver it in a paper bag. Years later, when he was visiting her at her home in New York, he was looking for something in one of her kitchen cupboards and found the Oscar still wrapped in the paper bag.

That’s just disrespectful. Whatever her opinion was on the Oscars, and she was entitled to it, many people in the industry can only dream of getting one of those, they are prestigious. She had been given the highest honour for her work, and she should have been more respectful and appreciative of her peers.

@@thomstephens You do Streisand a great disservice. I agree that she is not a dramatic actor, but she is a brilliant comedienne. And she is much much more than a "pop singer" - she is a truly great vocal artist with astonishing technique, perfect breath control and intonation, and flawless interpretations. I say this as a classically -trained musician and opera fan. Look her up on RU-vid singing "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" on Judy Garland's show. You might see what I mean.

People back then viewed Funny Girl and Oliver! as the saviours of the Hollywood Roadshow Musical which dominated the mid 1960s. Just when it looked liked the big Hollywood Roadshow release was finally about to die for a second time, (Star! Camelot, Doctor Dolittle and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang were just 4 of the many corpses), the one-two punch of Funny Girl and Oliver! came along and they became box office smashes and along came a wave of prestige which seemed to back up the phenomenon. Funny Girl and Oliver! were nominated for a combined 19 Oscars winning a total of 7. Essentially thanks to Funny Girl and Oliver!, the Roadshow Release was revived for a third lease of life.

Let''s be real; Barbra was awarded the Oscar not so much for her acting chops in Funny Girl, but for her musical performances. Evidently, the old school academy members/voters were as big a fans of Barbra at the time as everyone was. Also, Barbra Streisand starring in Funny Girl remains one of the most perfect marriages of actress and role that film has ever seen.
@joshdrayton1230

Nonsense. You could take out the musical numbers and it would still be an extraordinary, charismatic and deftly nuanced performance. In fact, into the second half of the film there are long stretches where she doesn't sing at all and you don't really miss the songs.

@Mike-fp5rc 6 лет назад
I fell in love with Streisand during this era (that is the entertainer and vocalist), and her charisma and charm was undeniable. But as far as just pure acting goes, Katharine Hepburn she wasn't. Unlike the great actresses of film, Barbra never truly let herself go, and allowed the movie audience to forget that it was Barbra Streisand on the screen, rather the character she was playing. Actually, I do believe she truly did it once; in a little (and little seen) film called Up the Sandbox, and to a lessor extent in The Owl and the Pussycat (in which I thought she was brilliant), and I also in For Pete's Sake.

Hepburn in "The Lion in Winter", for me, is as close to a perfect film performance as I've ever seen. The passion in some of her longer monologues is just ... electric. 'Meryl Streep' winning over 'Viola Davis' In 2011.

That must have been a close one. Viola had won the SAG, so most people thought she had it in the bag. I did not, and figured Meryl would win on her home court. The push for “she hasn’t won in 30 years” was compelling. I wish the Academy released its margins!

@@roycerowland6162 I agree. Davis is part of an ensemble cast and her role was not "actress in a leading role", in my opinion. Meanwhile, Meryl of course gives a brilliant performance and, if I'm not mistaken, is literally in every single scene of the film. In short, she carries the entire picture. She deserved to win.

Great video and analysis. I remember years ago as a kid watching " The Mike Douglass Show " and his main guest was author James Bacon. The interview was memorable because Bacon credited himself for Streisand's Oscar win. As he recounted the story, it was a week before the Oscar ballots were due. James Bacon was at the home of a voting Academy member's house for dinner ( Bacon BTW was not a voting member ). As the night wound down, his host was drunk and Bacon noticed his Oscar ballot had yet to be filled out and asked his friend why not with the voting deadline only a week away. The host said something along the lines of he didn't give a damn about the Oscars. And with that Bacon said he filled out the ballot and voted for Streisand because he felt she'd given the best performance of the year. Bacon went on to add that he even mailed the ballot himself.

Barbra Streisand is a queen of Musical and Katharine Hepburn- queen of Drama
@brianoyler4777
@brianoyler4777 5 лет назад
Hai Anh, Barbara Streisand is a queen of musicals? Well, Streisand could sing and reasonably act, but there have been many other musical actresses before and after Streisand who have been totally underrated or overlooked. A few who come to mind are: Doris Day, Betty Grable, Alice Faye, Lena Horne, Gloria DeHaven, June Haver. Even many of the musical dancers were overlooked like Eleanor Powell, Vera Ellen, Ann Miller. I am just not a Streisand fan, and I do not see her as mesmerizing as many of her fans do.

So..there are categories on Golden Globe for that...so drama must be over musical...but not...they are making a big deal of everthing...last year won Emma Stone...La la land....she is singing...dancing....acting...we dont know what category is any more...this time...Star is born...or Bohemian rapsody...where Malek is not even singing...just opening the mouth....so how we can understand all this...who is here wise or dumb...

He gave her her debut at one of his Las Vegas shows back in the day. I'm not sure many people knew this because she never acknowledged him which I think hurt poor Lee. I'm a huge Liberace fan. Anyhoo. This is awesome. Thanks so much. Much love and regards from Ireland 💖💖💖🏵🏵👍

The best part is at 12:32 where we get a glimpse of Jane Wyman, Raquel Welch, and Joan Crawford. I was wondering if the show "Feud: Bette and Joan" got it right when Bette Davis allegedly downplayed Hepburn's third Oscar by saying "but she only got two and a half Oscars!" I guess we'll never know.

Outstanding video - I love your channel - one of the best hands down. - just for what it's worth I've heard that the reason for the split was because of nominee Joanne Woodward's carrying on that her husband Paul Newman wasn't nominated for Best Director for "Rachel, Rachel" and that cost Woodward her second Oscar - she was the favorite to win going in.

This is a brilliant film essay. It deftly dissects the industry at a juncture of great change. I am pleased that it also references the alterations to the stolid old Academy membership which Mr. Peck's efforts brought. He is the true hero in all of this. Streisand and Hepburn are but two of the many heroines. The Academy has only gotten better since then. I think the more recent attempts to bring new racial/ethnic and women's talents into the positions of real power in the business is and will be greatly assisted by the Academy.
@brianoyler4777
@brianoyler4777 5 лет назад
Tim Irish, you are certainly entitled to your opinion as am I. The Academy has attempted to bring new aspects of racial and ethnic and independent women into the limelight, but one issue which today's film industry has totally disregarded is women maintaining their feminity. Compare how those actresses from the studio years were groomed and trained and how today's film actresses are totally lacking in those areas. With today's film actresses the question of feminity is an afterthought like "Oh, yes, and I must remember to be a lady." That is why actresses like Irene Dunne, Loretta Young, Ginger Rogers, Katherine Hepburn, Norma Shearer, Paulette Goddard, Vivien Leigh and even the icons and sex symbols like Garbo, Dietrich, Ava Gardner, Lana Turner all had a very feminine allure and mystique about them. Today's film actresses do not even have or compare.

Although I greatly admire Hepburn, she could’ve rightly won for Long Journey, Summertime, many others. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner was not a great performance, just a sympathy Oscar for Spencer Tracy. Yes, Lion in Winter is great acting. But Streisand gave an all-encompassing performance - drama, comedy, singing, dancing - that is still legendary. That Oscar should’ve been hers alone.
