Can you do a 80cc shootout from 1980 or 1981? I love these shootouts. The time that you put in your videos really shows. The fact that you have all the brochures is incredible!
I live in East Tennessee and my allergy’s are killing me also. I had a 1988 KX 250 and the larger gas tank helped on cross country races. And the motor had great low end power. As for the seat I replaced it with a Ceet tall foam and cover.
Nice mate, I have a fully restored 88 KX250 and it's fun to ride. It is ported, force 3 reeds, FMF pipe and bored out with larger wiesco HC piston (285cc). It makes a ton of power keeps up with my brand new RMZ450 in a flat race no problem at all but it really struggles to get the power down and starts can be tricky as the 450 just digs in and goes the KX will sit and spin if not launched with care and precision. Third gear starts are not a problem (i'm 110kgs) but it will spin the wheel allot especially on grass. Cheers.
Not many people understand that the 4-stroke was forced on the industry in the late 90's. If it was not for the fact that the 4-stroke motor hooks up better to the ground, it would have flopped. Nothing else on a 4-stroke was worth the change, nothing. You can make that KX hook up better, (and rev a bit slower), with a pretty heavy flywheel weight. If you can, retarding the ignition a few degrees should also mellow out the mid range hit a bit, and gain you a bit more top rpm. I am just riding again after almost 2 decades off,--but I find today's tires to be amazing. I loved my old Dunlop 752's back in the 80's, but today's Dunlop MX33 tires are totally amazing so far. If you have old tires vrs new,--I am sure that will make a difference too. Ohh, ---don't forget to use the clutch more than a 4-stroke. We used to use the clutch more to help hook up a 2-stroke and it took practice. if you are used to 4-strokes, you probably don't need to use the clutch like that. Doug in Michigan
@@EarthSurferUSA Thanks for that good points, my RMZ450 has a Rekluse auto clutch on it so at 45yrs its a really nice touch on a 450 moto x bike, yeah a bit more weight in the inertia would probably be a good thing I was also thinking of shaving the piston to drop the comp or adding a thicker head gasket as it is pretty high 10.2/1. This could lose a few hp but add longevity to the bore. As replating is not cheap and I can't bore much further now in dia. Cheers.
Dude, I also have a '88 KX250. I am restoring it right now, and I've bought waaay to many and expensive parts, but I have decided to get it back on track again. I'm also 110 kgs... :-) Rock on!!
Nice review, I had the 88 Kx 250, it had a great engine, but did not turn or handle well, 89 got a steeper headstock angle and 46mm fork and larger brakes. And was a much better bike.
Q for the individual who pressed the "thumbs down" button: We are all entitle to have opinions, but how on earth could you dislike this video? What's missing, in order to make it a "thumbs up" for you? :-) Thank you, a zillion times, The Motocross Vault! Cheers, Pete The Swede (living in Norway).
And people say 4 strokes are a pay in the ass to wrench on.. Well take a closer look again mr sunshine. The 2 stroke powervalve IS A HUGE PAY IN THE ASS to wrench on and they cost a f*cking fortune.
