A brief tour of our 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300GD Geländewagen. A civilian spec version of the original w460 chassis G's, it is in Agate Green with a black roof panel and black wheels, and original tan plaid cloth. Low mileage, aggressively detailed, and ready for anything, it is available now for immediate delivery.

Great Video! This really helps with my benchmarking. I have a 1984 300GD W460 LWB manual... ..with a W124 donated OM603 engine and automatic box being fitted this month. Great to see the detailing of how to do the interior. This helps my discussion with our mechanic for the interior change from Manual to Automatic. Best wishes from Malaysia!

Механика надежнее, чем старый автомат, его тогда на восстановление и ремонт гидротрансформатора и акпп, а потом уже внедрять...

Beautiful truck! Really don't see many in that configuration. Shame about the automatic, though. Would have been nice to see the engine compartment. I assume it doesn't have AC? Kind of a must-have here in Florida. Can't believe how clean and straight this one is. Will it do highway speeds (70mph-ish)? Thanks for sharing this one with us! Looking forward to seeing that Land Rover Discovery 1 200tdi when it's done, too.

Hello! Great work. Will that brush guard fit on a 1980 240GD ? (W460..I think)

Yes, I think I mostly agree with that assessment. The 460 chassis G's were, in my opinion anyway, clearly the best overall 4x4's of the period. They were the best built and the most livable on a daily basis. Very "Mercedes-like" at a time when being "Mercedes-like" meant more than perhaps it does now. When I take these apart and put them back together again I can see, very clearly, how much better engineered they are and how much better screwed together they are than any of their competitors in the period. But they were expensive even at the time, and something like a 60-series Land Cruiser was also a magnificent truck, and as you say, being "Mercedes-like" didn't necessarily create exclusively positive connotations in every buyer's mind. What these always lacked a little, again strictly in my own opinion, is maybe a bit of... character. By the time these came on the scene around 1980 the Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol had already established themselves as plucky and friendly little beasts that could be relied on in the way we have relied on Japanese engineering over the last half century. The Land Rover Defender had the lovable, British bulldog charm and stiff-upper-lip "can do" style that has always made them collectible. By comparison the G-wagens have always felt... a little cold, I think. A little severe. They have their own unique history that can't be discounted, but they have a very clinical economy of line and Teutonic severity that doesn't immediately grab everyone by the heart strings. Or, to put it another way, if a Land Cruiser rolls into some forgotten outpost in some far-flung place on the globe, people wave. If a Defender rolls in, people smile and cheer. But if a G-wagen rolls into the village, people hide their children. But all of this, of course, is probably unfair at some level, in every possible direction. The bottom line is that a w460 G-wagen, in proper nick, has always been an awesome 4x4. Fantastic to drive, easy to own, and one that requires its owner to make few - if any - compromises. None of the others can truly say the same, I don't think.
