This 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S (also referred to as 951) is one of the 380 special "Silver Rose" editions. It is a stock vehicle, well cared for, with over 195,000 original miles. To go from the regular 944 Turbo to the Turbo S, you got a larger turbo, ride height-adjustable Koni shocks, a hardened steel-cased gearbox, and many other factory race spec parts. The 944 Turbo S was actually faster around the track then its bigger brother the 930 Turbo, according to a period test in Automobile Magazine.

I knew someone who had a 924 with that interior, then they swapped it for a pinstriped 911 and I still missed the 924 because of that cloth.

First car I ever drove was my dad's 944. He had a few of them over the years and I'll NEVER FORGET the sound the doors make when you open and close them. So solid and satisfying...
@hcm1457
@hcm1457 Год назад
Super late comment here, but drove one of these in high school and man did I love my car. Out of all the personality and heart this car has, the solid heavy ass doors stood out the most. Spot on. Feels like an iron vault door lol.
@rmp5s
@rmp5s Год назад
@@hcm1457 Right!? And the door handles...give them a squeeze and that "ka-chunk" is just so nice. Hahaha
@hcm1457
@hcm1457 Год назад
@@rmp5s yesss!! Like some steampunk type sounds and feels lol. The little extra keyhole for the alarm. Mine had the original blaupunk stereo and everything. Bought from an attorney who's wife wanted it sold for a hot tub. Had his law school sticker on it still, which came in handy to tell the ladies I was an attorney 🤣🤣 Seriously though, meat and potatoes were a freaking tank. The sensors and small parts...not so much. Had it break down on a date once. Not cool obvs, but aside from one full on maintenance overhaul with balance shaft belts/all belts water pump etc, it only ever left me sitting twice,which was water pump and then a relay switch of some sort. If I recall correctly the engine was literally half of a 928?
@rmp5s
@rmp5s Год назад
@@hcm1457 Hahaha...put that lawyer sticker to work! lol Half a 928? Not sure. That may be a bit of a tricky question as I'm pretty sure there is more than one version of the engine that was used in the 928.

944 turbo S owner here, couldnt wait for this video to come out and am very glad Matt loved it! Three corrections: 1)it is 250Hp 2) around 1650 were built, 1000 with the Silverrose interior 3)it costed 105000 of todays USD, so comparing it to a Miata sounds a cruel :) This is a serious track car who was fitted with a comfortable interior and an exhaust cutting over 20 horses. Thanks Matt and Dillon!
@ipwndrums
@ipwndrums 6 лет назад
how are miatas not considered "serious track cars"? you put too much weight onto the financial aspect of that statement. miatas have a perfect 50/50 weight ratio, rwd, mostly all manual etc... and also go to a track and tell me when you DON'T see one there.

The early '88 944S were originally all Silverose and were a special "stand alone" model. They were originally designed to be a limited production model. They became so popular that they wound up being a regular model available in any Porsche color. At the time of their production, they were known as one of the hottest cars that you could buy.

When I was in high school, I saved 5K in cash to get a car. Saw that 944 prices had dropped. This was in 1990! I was 17 and found a one-owner 1985 1/2 with only 35K miles, and I traded a crap Saab worth 6K, but somehow got the dealer to give me 9500 for the Saab, and paid 4K cash on a 13,500 ask for the 944. Red. Phone dial wheels. Perfect interior. And with the newer 911 dash of that time. For a 17 year old kid, it was sick. My friends hated me, but I was like: fuck you, I earned it, and they were all driving cars three times as expensive from mommy and daddy's garage.

Yes - also right. Thats kind of Standard. Not many owners took the battery out once in a while to dry and clean the place under it. So most are rusted there too (also in older 911 Models).

I went from living in a trailer when I was 15 and extremely poor, moved out, then moved in with my best friends family, who adopted me. Long story short, they bought me a 1991 944 S2. The 3.0 4 cylinder NA engine. I was only 16, but took immaculate care of that vehicle. The first thing my Stepdad said when he gave the car to me, was "if you don't get laid in this car, I'm going to kick your ass!" My love of the 944's began that day.

- Agree 100 percent from personal experience from 1989. (My college years) Friend had a 944 turbo S, friends dad an 1986 930. Both were new cars. 944 easy to drive fast. 930 was old school VW feel with a 4 speed from the floor. We used to take the both out nights cruising, but the 944 was all around a more modern easier to drive fast car. 930 was excellent mainly in a straight line, (could hit 90 MPH in second gear easily)

You know what, this thing drives like a Ferrari. Surprisingly, it might just be one of the best driver's cars ever made.

Hommes d'influence 968 was one of the great analog Porsches. 6 speeds (all close ratio, even 6th!) 3L in-line 4, round headlamps!

Tune and intake is a sure way to blow the weak head gasket. And if you want to track it, get ready to starve rod bearing on cylinder #2 of any oil. Otherwise, excellent balance and ability to be tossed around.

If you're a DIY person, maintenance isn't bad... get a quote from a shop on a timing belt service and you'll see how pricey they can get.

Ive seen some great youtube videos on how to take those old yellowed fluid tanks and make them bright white again. I would do that to any older car I owned (in the future).

Would someone watching that may have one submit their 944 S or S2 (16 valve motors), or 968?
