Porsche 928 S4 - One Take

This absolutely stunning Porsche 928 S4 is, what we'll call a "survivor" car with only 32,000 miles on the odometer from new. Aside from a set of "Turbo Twist" wheels, a Nardi steering wheel, and a cat-back exhaust, it's completely stock and about as close as I'll ever come to driving a brand-new, 28-year old 928.

No, Matt! Tell everyone it's crap, that way prices will stay low... I'm poor and in college and want one when I get out.

You can buy them cheap, but the maintenance is not cheap. A $5,000 928 will cost about $10-15,000 to get into good shape. They always say to buy the best kept one in your price range.

Damn I love the 928, it's such a sleek and underrated design. I know a lot of Porsche owners don't rate them, but these things are magnificent GT cars.
@charlesearle8414

It's such a futuristic car. To think that Porsche began designing the car in the early 70s and released it in 1978. It would be like releasing a countach in the 1960s. The 928 still looks good today, and there is still no car that looks anything like it. It still has the Porsche look of making the fascia smile by the line in the hood. It's just so mellow and sleek. I just love it.

I went out and bought one of these based almost solely on watching this video 4 months ago. I couldn't be any happier with my decision. The one I ended up getting was also White and also a 5 speed manual. It's a 91 Porsche 928 GT. It is a night and day difference from the automatic versions. Both great cars but shifting these cars through the gears is an amazing experience! If you get one, be sure it is mechanically sound before you buy.Here is what I bought, I swear, based on this video. Hey SmokinTire, let me know if you want to make another video, this time with the pretty uncommon 91 928 GT. Best regards,Charlie HawkinsLaguna Beach, CA

Ahh the car that really sparked my interest for Porsche. Dad had a 928S4 growing up and just the smell of fuel in the garage before getting in the car / the leather smell inside that makes you never want to leave. I will never forget it. An epic car experience ! Thx Dad... now I'm obsessed with cars lol :D

That steering wheel is nice but doesn’t work in that car. It belongs in something like a 69’ 911S, 356 or a 914. It looks out of place in a 928.

Love this video! My Grandfathers retirement present to himself was a 928, and the first thing he did with it was a road trip to Montana with my uncle. For years after they talked about hitting 160mph indicated on an open road just after sunrise, and how the car felt like the car was built to run 100MPH+ all day long. This video took me back to some great times!

I owned a 1983 S model. Just a phenomenal car. When I sold it I gave the new owner the receipts for repairs, almost put a 350 Chevy in it because of that. Despite this I regret ever getting rid of it. It was such a great road car. I drove it straight from Ohio to Sturgis . That car was worth every penny.

I've had my 89 S4 for 17 years. @280K miles, the engine remains untouched. Miles of smiles. Clocked at 165.8 MPH in Nevada desert (legally in sanctioned road race) when bone stock and 150K miles on the odo. 316HP from the factory, pushing about 260 to the ground through its Mercedes-built 4-spd auto transaxle. With mild (5 PSI) supercharger, I added about 100HP for even more fun. The 90 degree V8 provides a glorious muscle car sound and feel. The 928 has a very limited race history. Most, but not all, who have tried track racing have encountered oiling issues, and the cars long polar moment inhibits fast turn in. It's a GT car that shines on high speed sweepers and open road. Very solid over-engineering with some cantankerous quirks that once you understand, rarely present problems. But neglected 928s are a money pit, especially if cosmetics are poor. If you want one, spend the money to get the best one you can find.

I let go of my beautiful jet black S4 just over a year ago. After criss-crossing the UK for 12 years in sublime mile-eating comfort, the feeling of loss hit me like no other. For all its foibles (it is definitely not perfect) it stand as the only car I ever owned in 25 years that practically shapeshifted into being another member of the family. A truly wonderful and totally unique character of a machine.

Good review, I own an 87 Black with Plum interior with auto and I enjoy it a lot!!!! I drove from El Paso, TX to Midland, TX yesterday and drove back this afternoon just to drive. 300 miles each way was fun and awesome to drive a few miles above the 80 speed limit in cruise control mode. Several cars that I'd pass or they would pass me either went faster or slowed down to check it out. Several wanted to see if I'd follow their acceleration, only got tempted with a Jaguar F-Type and kept up. Yes my car is 29 years older and didn't quite take off from 80 as he did but still fun and flattered that this classic car gets the attention. At gas station in Van Horn an older gentleman came up as I was putting gas and said that's one clean car and one that I haven't seen in years. Thank you sir!

There were only 25 five speed imported to the US each year. I made the mistake of buying a new 928 S4 in 1986. When I drove it off the lot it dropped about 50 K in value. It's my favorite cars that I've ever owned. It was only topped by a 1991 GTS five speed. They had plenty of legroom in the passenger seat unlike the Corvette in the 80s. Plus I can put my wheelchair in the back. They definitely have a very solid feel to the car. Just like you said. Although if you are driving down the highway at 150 mph. it felt like 100. They do not like to go under 35 mph through the neighborhood. They did get a little floaty when going through the back roads of Scottsdale Arizona. Especially the undulating hills. They could easily bottom out and want to float right or left. When you are on flat terrain they handled beautifully. I wish I still had my 91.
@OMGWTFLOLSMH

I've been driving one of these in the early 2000's a couple of times. I think it was one of the later models with about 340 HP. I was seriously impressed with how damn quick it was. It definetely gave the 996's a ride for their money. But I also was irritated with the key-position on the right. But what a machine it was! To me it is on the same level as the front-engine-Ferraris. Meaning it is the Gentleman's Porsche. Way more sophisticated than the obvious choice 911. Great video as always!

IMO The 928 project was always being tripped up at a high level. I used to come across 928s on the road and drag strip back in the day but my 91 ZR1 saw them off case by case. I sat in one once and was suitably impressed by the feel of the car. Interestingly I also came across the engine in a Tullio Abbate raceboat, it turns out that Porche were offering these a crate race motors, twin turbo 750 hp! With a factory warranty for sufficient hours for a class 1 Offshore powerboat season, so to answer your question Matt, Porche did it themselves just not in a car.

I don't know what you mean by "pound the crap" out of it. I spent a lot of this video at full throttle, and shifted within 1,000 RPM of redline almost every gear. If the car was worse, I wouldn't treat it worse?

+Michael Cohen I said I felt guilty running the motor that hard, and that was probably the hardest its been driven in years, but I don't see a need to pound the shit out of it. Wide angles slow things down, but I'm carrying 80-100 mph down a good portion of that road.

@lanceg8192

On 32 valve cars, it's the timing belt. On automatics, it's the engine thrust bearing because of the drive shaft coupler to the crank. Most either have or will have electrical gremlins since the cars are loaded with electronics and have 22 or more years under their belt. A good PPI (pre purchase inspection) will spot these which will give you some bargaining leverage. And the correct rear 16" tires are no longer available which is why you see them with non-original wheels. Most everything else is like a typical car except at a steeper price tag for parts. If you are handy with a wrench, there are a few online communities that have a large database of info and knowledge. Most Porsche dealerships are clueless as to what a 928 is now-a-days. There are a number of independent 928 mechanic shops around the country but they are few and far between. I have a '87 928 S4 (67k miles) and a '78 911 (73k miles) and do all of my own wrenching which isn't much because of mint cars and good PPI's. The old say goes, "Buy the best one you can afford up front and it will cost you less in the end".

I had the chance to try a 928 s4 for a long term run, and It was great. The sound transmits a power feeling of a muscle car but with the hability to rev high.The consumption on highway was suprisingly good (it was an auto). Really liked it. I bought an E39 m5 just after this try and it was as good as the porsche but without this little bit of spirit/character that I liked, and without this amazing tone...

Beautiful car and what a sound! I've always had a soft spot for 928's but the horror stories of how hard they are to work on and the number of problems they can have has kept me from seriously considering owning one. I always wanted one of these, but I hear the repair cost is very high. Thanks for another GREAT review! This car is so cool!

Bought one from by best friend moved here from South America bought it from his step dad. it was my friends first car ever. I remember first riding in it. I was amazed by the quality and the looks of it. It almost looks like a Lear jet or a space ship.

this engine has the longest timing belt i've ever seen.

Yeah, it's over 7 feet long. If you're trying to buy one, make sure it's been replaced already, as it's a pain to have done.

Charles Earle I got a Corrado VR6 which i'm currently restoring to new, it feels like a Porsche rather than a VW.

Charles Earle I wanted a 928 but i just couldn't afford it, glad i got the Corrado its got so much character i'm amazed that such an old car feels so modern to drive. One day i'm going to get a black 928, i'm a big Chase HQ fan when i was a kid.

I'm planning on getting a 928 S4 some time in my future. It's just such a futuristic car, and a real bargain compared to the 911s of the era.

I've come here after reading a 1990 Autocar review on one of these where the guy brought a 17,000 mile used example and ran it as a daily driver! He got 17 mpg just driving it around (London and immediate area mainly) and 20mpg on longer trips. That's imperial gallons btw. He described one trip to Europe around the Periphique near Paris where he hit an indicated 180mph at 6,300rpm. And it was rock steady! Awesome

I enjoyed this review. I have an 88 auto. Yeah yeah auto, makes a fantastic commuter car. Has the GTS exhaust on it for a nice rumble. Amazing road trip machine.

I always thought the "4" meant all-wheel drive. You learn something every day.
