This RCA CC300 camcorder was originally bought by my father new in 1988 and saw use by me up until about 2006, when it stopped recording and playing tapes. Today we take it apart and fix some worn out belts with whatever we could find... In this case... Rubber bands...

Your background music sounds like an old 90s point and click adventure fantasy game. As you explore a 90s RCA camera's innards. Fascinating.

Looks like I might have a more difficult time to repair mine. Mine is a smaller VHS-C camcorder. It's a JVC that came out late 2004. I know I'm gonna have to worry about the belts a lot later. It's working fine now, but I know down the road they will start to wear out.. Cool video.

According to the prb belt catalog the cc300 uses a 3.0 and 4.6 belt , part numbers scq3.0 and scx4.6, unfortunately no info on the main flat belt , but I also found kits selling all 3 online

As an aside: I managed to blow the fuse in this thing when probing the outputs trying to figure out where the video signal was. I bought an RF modulator unit for this line of cameras and disassembled it in order to make an A/V cable. Turns out the camera feeds 12V straight out of that connector to power any accessories attached and I managed to short it straight to ground. The fuse is a fast blow, 250V 2A fuse from Bussman, in a 5mm x 20mm package. You should be able to find it at any hardware store.

What a monster that camcorder is! I got early 2000's Digital8 Sony camcorder and I thought that was huge already.
@Shot97
@Shot97 8 лет назад
+Polaventris When I was using it in the early 2000's I was getting strange looks from some people that thought it was a relic, while others thought I was from television station. Honestly the quality of it was just as good or better than anything made in the early 2000's in my opinion, so I felt fine using it back then. I've looked up the price of it brand new and it was either $1,000 or $3,000 back in 1988 when my dad got it. Not sure which one but wow... Just about what the Amiga would have cost him new or more.
@Shot97
@Shot97 8 лет назад
+Polaventris I kind of wish consumer camcorders were still that big. When you got the handling of it down you could get a very smooth picture out of it. I feel the smaller cameras move around way too much when you hand hold them now. But putting this sucker on your shoulders meant it "could" be very steady if you got the hang of it. It could be even worse movement if you didn't though. I think if you hand hold a camera very smoothly it gives off a nice impression of being there vs a tripod. Real humans move around ever so slightly even when standing still, and I always thought this camera was quite good when held.

Hey @shot97 I just bought this exact Camcorder today and I’m so happy to start using it! I can’t get the eject door to open, the viewfinder to work, or use the FF RR functions at all; however, I’ve only tested without a tape in. Any suggestions? I plan on replacing the rubber bands tomorrow. Thanks.
@Shot97
@Shot97 6 лет назад
Someone else mentioned a problem with the ejection of the door; But I can't wrap my head around what exactly might cause that. I don't think it's a mechanism that controls that... It's almost like a gull-wing door that WANTS to be opened at all times, but it's forced closed. Once you tell it to eject it just lets go of the door and it flies open. So maybe the button isn't telling it to let go? It's not an issue I had problems with so I didn't really snoop around that too much. You should be able to take the door off and fool around, however. - The FF/RR/Play/Record buttons won't operate unless there's a tape inside. As for the viewfinder... Either the wires don't have a proper connection; or the CRT inside of it has died. I'm pretty sure it's a super small CRT in there... I can't imagine a camcorder got enough use to kill that off, though. If you're also having issues ejecting as well as with the viewfinder, it could be the electronics. Which would be very hard to fix unless there's just a loose connection inside. So I'd take it apart, unplug everything, plug it back in nice and secure.

Hi I have one of these. I replaced the 3 belts and it will eject but with a tape in the power button just blinks. Do you know what’s this means?
@sparkyuiop
@sparkyuiop 6 лет назад
Actually there is a big difference between those belts and rubber bands. The belts are made from a carbon material and don't stretch like rubber bands. If you use a rubber band then use one smaller than the belt but it won't last anywhere near as long.
@Shot97
@Shot97 6 лет назад
Well, it's going to be interesting to see just how long it does end up lasting. Been about 2 years so far and it's still doing fine. As long as it lasts an acceptable amount of time I won't mind cracking it open once in awhile. Can't imagine I'd be able to easily track down the actual belt for this thing, though I never did try. For me it was about the novelty of using the rubber bands and having them work.
@sparkyuiop
@sparkyuiop 6 лет назад
Fair point.
@AlainHubert
@AlainHubert 6 лет назад
Yep. I did exactly that on my 1988 RCA CC300, replaced the belts with rubber bands. It worked for things like door mechanisms and non-critical things like that. But for the capstan drive it did not work properly, simply because the speed is critical for that function. And the constant stretching of the rubber band produced unstable speed. The video tracking managed to keep up, but the sound was wobbly (mono linear track). If someone can tell us where to find exact replacement belts (and pinch roller) for an RCA CC300, I'd be ever so grateful.

I'm assuming its the belts and will have to replace them. But when i switch to camera mode it displays a grey image but shows the date and what not. Would this also have to do with the belts or is it something i wont be able to fix? PLES HELP MEH! Thanks.
@Shot97
@Shot97 8 лет назад
+Typical Films Gaming With the tapes not playing at regular speed, that would be a problem with a belt. Replacing it should solve that problem. However, if you put the camera into recording mode it "should" switch the display to look through the lens, unless you forgot the cap was on, or if the switching between lens and video was also controlled by a belt. I don't know what controls that, it always sounded electric when they switched so you might have a bigger problem there. It wouldn't hurt to take the thing apart and replace the belts, especially if you go the cheap route with the rubber bands. If there is some kind of damage to the viewfinder preventing the image from showing it's possible it would still record anyway and it could be used with that knowledge, maybe even look for a replacement viewfinder. Also, check the iris button on the side of the camera, if that's turned all the way down then you won't get an image. The cap and the iris thing are two simple things to be sure of, then go for the belts because it needs them anyway, see what happens.
@NoahChubb
@NoahChubb 4 года назад
How "important" is the first belt you replaced on this camcorder? I.e., if this belt doesn't seem to work, will all the basic functions be rendered useless? I bought a cheap second hand RC CC250 model and this belt appeared to be the main problem, as the other two larger ones work fine. I can't get anything else to work, but the other belts move up when I "manually eject." I'm really interested in restoring this, as it seems like it could work if I get this right, but all my rubber band attempts have failed.

Maybe you could help me. I have the RCA CC305 and I cannot get it to power up. I have to use the charger/adapter as the power supply to the camera because the camera still has its 30 year old original battery. The camera was in perfect working order when it was put in storage many years ago, but it will not power on now. I cleaned the metal contacts on both the camera and the adapter and still got nothing. I checked the adapter with my multimeter and it still works perfectly, so the problem is in the camera I assume. Got any idea what my problem might be?

Yeah, that was a thing mine would do sometimes. Another symptom of those belts giving out, you're just not all the way there yet. I have the same camcorder and fixed the belts. Now, I have clear video, but no audio from a vhs recording playback. I got audio from a prerecorded tape though. Also, when I put the vhs recorded tape in a working vcr I could only see glimpses of my recording and the rest was static. I have cleaned the head drum a couple times already and am wondering what I can do
@Shot97
@Shot97 3 года назад
If you're getting audio from a prerecorded tape but not on one you recorded from the camcorder, the problem could be the microphone. You can try to reconnect it or plug a different mic into it and see if that helps there. If you have clear video playback on the camcorder but not on a regular VCR and you've already cleaned the heads, try adjusting the tracking manually, and also check to see if the camcorder is recording in LP mode. Many newer VCRs only support SP and SLP/EP modes, playing back an LP tape in these VCRs will produce static. You can try a different VCR or adjust the camcorder to SP or SLP.

@@Shot97 I took apart the viewfinder/microphone and the actual microphone plugs into a port connected to a circuit board. I plugged in a headset with a mic and tried lots of tests. However, there is still no good sound, only buzzing. I wonder if it has to do with the circuit board, but the soldering points don't look bad. It kind of sucks this camcorder doesn't have an external mic port, just a viewfinder plug in. Is there anything I can do to fix it with maybe the board or wires?

@Shot97
@Shot97 7 лет назад
You wouldn't happen to have another VCR to test the tape on? Just to pinpoint if the problem is on camcorder end or the VCR end. I mean it wouldn't hurt to clean and demagnetize the heads in the VCR... But if you get the same garbled crap no mater where you play the tape than it's the camcorder... I'd say clean and demagnetize the heads there as well. If it's super choppy it could be the belts going but my first guess would be the heads just need to be cleaned, make sure tracking is in a good position on the camcorder and VCR, should be all you need to do.
@briantalipan2023
@briantalipan2023 7 лет назад
Shot97 ok thanks for the advice! Would I have to demagnetize the Camcorder or the tape itself?
@Shot97
@Shot97 7 лет назад
The camcorder, wouldn't hurt to do it for the VCR as well. You can manually clean it using a Q-tip with alcohol or windex. In order to demagnetize it you'd need a special tape that would do that... Perhaps you already have one, should be able to find cheap and never used one on amazon or Ebay I imagine.

If it's on playback mode without a tape I'd say it would have a grey background. On camera mode it should show what the lens sees regardless of if there's a tape inside. A small white line going across the screen could mean the CRT is bad, not sure.

I'm guessing you went with the rubberbands like I did? If it's sounding strange I'd say you need a tighter or looser rubberband. Mine took about 3 before I got it right, and it'll never be exactly "perfect" unless you order the original belts for the thing, should be usable if you keep trying. I'd switch out the other belts while you've got the thing open, might help with the sound as well.

Do not fix it with rubber bands. That is a very stupid thing to do. Rubber bands have too much elasticity and not enough grip, which will throw the mechanism out of sync, and they will just completely break anyway after so many hours of use. Buy and find a generic VCR belt kit with real rubber belts and find one with belt sizes that match what is installed in the camcorder, - approx 10-20% smaller to account for tensional slack. 100% guarantee that this camera stopped working within a month after filming this.
@Shot97
@Shot97 4 года назад
How about you actually attempt to do something before flapping your mouth up and down? Yes, it still works. Five years later it still works! And yes, the audio is ever so slightly out of sync, it goes in and out ever so slightly, as it was on day one. Fix it with the real belt if you give a ss--- I don't, and if you care seriously about recording with a 1988 VHS camera, god there's a few things wrong with you buddy. How about I quote you for all who think VHS is a art quality to strive for; "That is a very stupid thing to do." The video is for fun, what is so difficult to understand about that, you pathetic twat.
