It’s amazing how much better the Amiga was. It was really the first console in many ways. These games remind me of wizardry games. Similar arguments between versions also happen with those fans. Out of curiosity I went and loaded up MM3 on dos and graphically I think it’s much for muchness but the sound. Man… chalk and cheese. Amiga is far superior.

This is my favorite all time Amiga game and one of my top ten games of all time of any genre. Such an enthralling world playing it as a kid. I even cracked out sn emulator and played it “with” my wife on a tv in 2005ish so she could enjoy it. Need to revisit it. Was such a thrill to get the turtle and then getting the swan was mind blowing. Kindness affects conversations. As in who wil/wont talk to you. 30-40 is good (going off memory). It’s funny seeing the cheat page on Lemon Amiga and remembering I found all of those by accident just by playing the game. Different world back in the 80s. Thanks for the nostalgia trip. What’s your opinion of the sequel? I never played it personally.
@Shot97

Haven't played it, assuming you're talking about the official 2nd game for Windows by the original creator. I've seen it, and have read that it's disappointing, but I'll refrain judging it until I play. There was another game for the Amiga which was kind of pushed as a spiritual successor but it didnt have the original creator involved.

@lifeschool

Some say it is over-rated, some say under appreciated. For me it was one of the first movie or pop culture games which had some hype about it, which didn't involve typing anything (like Lord of the Rings or UK Gremlins etc), and felt like an interactive movie. I didn't have a clue how to play it back then, and dont know if I beat it, I just remember being trampled by the mashmellow man outside of the tall building. I think I discovered by accident that you can press space on the titles to hear the "Ghostbusters" sample at any point, and I love that attention to detail.
@Shot97
@Shot97 3 месяца назад
Same here with accidentally discovering the spacebar sample. I was doing it on the other versions which allowed it, like the Atari 800 and noticed only the 64 version keeps the sample in mind in terms of where the music is supposed to be. It blanks the audio on the 64, but it returns to the music where it should, where as other versions blank the audio and pause the music, going back to exactly where you stopped, which is kind of annoying. But yeah, very ambitious title, especially considering the timeframe to get it all done, and one I'll always come back to. It made me want to keep playing as a kid. Did you ever review this one? I don't recall seeing this one on the Lemon64 RU-vid, if you did.

Codes that worked across systems? Very impressive for 1984.
@Shot97
@Shot97 3 месяца назад
Yeah, that made getting the comparison footage extra enjoyable, because I could start with the money I had on the 64 and keep building it up. The magazines had lots of people sending in their names and codes, because the code also has something to do with your name. There was one person in the magazines who complained there wasn't an actual save feature in the game, but personally to have the codes and names work from system to system, that's more than you could hope for with an actual save. It only works with the original ports, the 64/Atari 800/Apple II, I'd imagine the MSX and ZX Spectrum as well as the PC. The Atari 2600 didn't have codes, but would allow you to immediately restart the game with the money you had from the last game. The Master System had a different code system that only worked with it, and the NES has no code system, which would have really been nice for that version since there's a lot of upgraded equipment.

Oh yeah, I agree. E.T. was not a horrible game for the 2600. Pac-Man, on the other hand...
@Shot97
@Shot97 3 месяца назад
I even remember having fun with Pacman on the 2600, although certainly it could have been a million times better. Interestingly in terms of sales, Pacman was a success, which is probably why Atari pushed E.T. to be finished quickly and manufacture more than they could sell. E.T. still sold 2 million, but they made 4 million. It only failed because Atari had warped expectations. Pacman strangely remains the best selling 2600 game ever, despite the warts.

I totally forgot about this game. I couldn't play it well from what I remember, but I liked the music and speech synthesis. You've inspired me to play this one with my daughter, because she loves the movie. You've piqued my curiosity about the PC version. I don't know if you found a way to get it to work, but I'll give it a go. I would've liked to have seen this on the Amiga.
@Shot97
@Shot97 3 месяца назад
I could get to the introduction screen with the music on the PC, as well as enter my name into the main menus, but the controls just refused to work once you got the car/equipment area. The problem could be the disk image circulating online, I have two programs to copy the disk images to actual floppy disks, none of them recognized the image. Several of the emulators I tried wouldn't even recognize the image, and the ones that did locked up in the equipment area. It shows up as one of the few games to not work for DOSBox. If I had the actual physical disk I could probably get it to work on my PC, although because it's a booter disk I'd likely have to use an older PC in a closet because it would probably run too fast on my regular retro computer without slowdown programs. But I can't run a slowdown program on a booter disk. If you get anywhere with it let me know, I couldn't even find a single video of it working online. Also, nobody ever bothered to crack it, which is why it has to be booted from a floppy or floppy image. If anybody had cracked the game you could just run it off the hard drive. This is always a fun one to watch the newbie's play, they always hate it. I mean, I don't think it deserves to be hated, but it's still fun to watch people play for the first time.
@KILRtv

XP was my main and 98 was my alternate when things didn't work in XP correctly. I loved that setup for YEARS! (My current retro box has that setup.) I wouldn't have another dual boot system that I enjoyed until Windows 7/10. I know this was 5 years ago, but if you ever consider on doing another OS review, I'd love to see your take on W95.
@Shot97
@Shot97 6 месяцев назад
If the game reviews had the response I feel they deserve, really if only the people who are subbed to me watched then, then I'd feel more desire to do these one off videos. These get more views than the games do, and it's very demotivating because it's just rambling, with the games I feel my looks have a historical relevance and I hate that more people like these. That said, I could probably do Windows 95 in my current style, because there would have been a lot of magazines that covered it, where as ME was mostly online garbage. I have old footage where I fooled around in 95, installing it, but I never did anything with it. There's a lot of software I'd like to do, and back then I did it as a reaction because too many people just did games. Now it's the other way and too many people do hardware type stuff, and I'm just anti what's popular.

@@Shot97 , I went from the Amiga OS 3.5 (I think) to W95, so I missed the DOS6/Win 3.1 boat (although i have one now). I'm not sure if you used 3.1 back in the day, but it would be interesting to hear what W95 did right and what was better on 3.1. From what I could see, most major games were on DOS, but I'm sure there were some major applications that shined under 3.1. I remember the "complaints" that W95 looked too much like a Mac.

This is definitely impressive on the Amiga.. Though a 1985 very high end PC - could have a 386DX-16/20, which is a lot faster than the 1979 Motorola 68000. The sound would definitely suck on the PC (Roland / MIDI possible though). Graphics - EGA wouldn’t look as good; MCGA didn’t come out until 1986. So yeah - I don’t see a PC matching this in 1985 at all.

1. Hehe, thanks so much for the shout-outs! Tis an honor, sir! 2. That DOS version only supported PC Speaker? Not even three-voice Tandy sound? Well according to the list of Tandy-supported games, NOPE! Ugh. There's no game out there that's worth PC Speaker sound. 4. The C64 version does look great! If it plays nice with NTSC I'll be giving it a spin. 5. Holy cow, you beat this? I'm every bit as impressed as I was when I went to the Amigos' Boatfest last year and there was a guy there playing all the way through Shadow of the Beast with no cheats. 6. Who in their right mind would compare this to Defender? 7. Tonight I've been grinding my bravery up over 200 in the C64 version of Faery Tale Adventure. Such a slog. And it doesn't seem to increase the reach of your attack like the Amiga version does. There's a lot the Amiga version does that this one doesn't. I think once I'm up over 300 I'll start making gameplay videos. I may be the very first person to grind out this much of the game on the C64. At least nothing out there on RU-vid seems to indicate that people have spent much time with it.
@Shot97
@Shot97 6 месяцев назад
If the DOS version did support Tandy, I wouldn't have been able to use it I don't think. One of the benefits I don't have with real hardware. Caution with the 64, as I went through just about every image I could find, a good 10 of them at least, and most did not run on my NTSC machine. Two of them did, but the cracks were broken. One didn't have level 2, it repeated level 3 twice. Another didn't have the final level, it repeated level 5 twice. lol. One of those things that nobody cares about because nobody wins these things. Shadow of the Beast is one I want to review, and I've set up for it a couple times, but it didn't quite capture me or anger me enough to say "That's it, you're mine!" Which is kind of the way I get, if I'm determined to get something done, even in real life things, there's a stubbornness there that won't let go. There's probably friends that want to hang out with me, but I'm lost until X thing gets done. Yeah, Defender, haha... That's why you really have to read what these people say, you can't just note what the percentage was when it comes to old reviews. None of them knew how to properly score a game anyway, it's in their words, that tells you a lot about if you should even care about what they're saying. Looking forward to more 64 Faery Tale Adventure. You're right, there needs to be a full playthrough of that on the 64. I was super interested in it, although when I reviewed the Amiga version I just walked around a little bit for the 64 comparison, but nevertheless I liked what I saw, and this is coming from someone who had to deal with a floppy and no mouse. Glad to have finally been given the perfect opportunity to point people your way, not that anyone is watching me anyway... but thank you Stewart Cheifet for giving me an excuse!

Phew! That raised my blood pressure. And I was sittin' on my ass! Welp, pretty sure I can hard-pass this one as I'm certain I'd never beat it. Cool to watch you put your name at the top of high scores. (Did those devs actually earn those high scores? Their scores were close to yours or... did some QA guy that was paid to beat it show them his final score? We may never know...)
@Shot97
@Shot97 6 месяцев назад
I mean if anyone was going to earn those scores I imagine it would have been the designers. Still, due to the scores being so "clean", aka 250000/200000 etc, where as mine is a dirty 276700, that suggests to me that they programmed those scores in there, nobody earned them. In the written review I pondered "It's like they know what's in an arcade game and so they put it in Menace, but they never asked themselves why it's in an arcade game..." - Arcade games go from easy to impossible to get quarters, this cost real money. Designers put their names into the highscore area, because Atari wouldn't allow them anywhere else... But there's credit in the menu here! They didn't ask the why! The brutal thing is that I had to continue onward to even beat them. If I would just killed myself after winning when it sends you back to the 1st level, my score would have still been lower than Dave Jones! I could have won the game and still not been the 1st on the list, it's only because I kept playing that I got 1st. This game, man... Your blood pressure? This game almost broke me into never making another video, because this was just as much work as an RPG, and when you go face to face against popular opinion and nostalgia, that's a recipe for others to hate this video, and I almost didn't publish it.
@AmigaLove
@AmigaLove 6 месяцев назад
Well, as far as I'm concerned, the fact you legitimately grew new white hairs whilst beating this game fair and square w/o ANY cheats prohibits anyone from EVER publicly hating on this video for legitimate hard-core gaming reasons. All it would do is expose themselves of having used a cracked version that gave infinite shields (or not having ever gotten past level 4, which means they really are kinda full of sh**). Gritting their teeth, they'd fire up the game and give it a go one more time to PROVE YOU WRONG! And, within 1-2 hours, they'd give up. And move on. And decide that maybe they really prefer platformers anyway, so screw that American guy! Yeah... ;)
