1989 ATK 406 Getting on it 

Back then, if you had that bike, you were in the zone. It was the Rolls Royce of dirtbikes..true classic.🎉

Raced a couple enduros and hare scrambles in the early 90’s on that same model…my dad had the smaller 250cc version from the same year and it was a great tight trail enduro. The 406 was a dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde motor. You could just torque around on the lower half of the power band but if you opened her up you better know where you’re headed and hold on. I had giant grass stains on my whole bare skin back for 2 days when a 4th gear power wheelie got away from me. Lol, I never let go and thought I could just ride it out by modulating the throttle. I just remember how Beautiful the blue sky looked

I always wondered if these would've sold better if they had liquid cooled engines. Back in those days, liquid cooling was relatively new, and everyone wanted it on their bikes.

Loved my 87 husqvarna xc cross country. In 2003 it wasnt the best hanfling thing around it wasnt the best on tracks. I was scated to jump it but it was super reliable. It eas scary fast untilk i road my neighbors atk tjat thing ess mental. Trees turned intoba blurbpotholes bevame non existent do to high rate of speed ane tires hardly touching the ground. Bike was scary keep in mind i was 15 or16 130 lbs and couldnt touch the ground. Needed a stum milcrate or bucket to start and stop. Up and down the dirt road and i gave it back feeling likw i juat time warped. They kust dont make them like they used to. Vintage 2 strokes are just so raw and undefined

My nephew bought a ATK 260 in it's crate from a local Harley dealer for $2500. 20 years ago.

Honda went with the left side kickstart on the 1983 cr480r. Wnen i take it out ( not very often now because oarts shortage) people think its a deal breaker. After 2 kicks you never think twice about it

It looks and sounds fantastic !! I know you haven't really taken it out on the trail yet but do you have an impression on how it corners? It looks like the steering head angle is fairly steep which usually produces a tight cornering bike at the expense of high speed stability. Few bikes from the 80's (and 90's) had steep head angles. New bikes have very steep head angles and have good stability. I wonder if the ATRAC system helped to allow for steeper head angles as it may have been beneficial in combating headshake when braking and decelerating from speed over small bumps. I have a 1992 CR250 that has a very steep steering angle and will turn under almost anything but would get headshake death wobbles when hitting those braking bumps. Stiffer fork and shock springs plus a revalve solved the issue. Great job on the build !!
