This is a video describing three separate issues that were preventing the cassette deck in my 1989 Bose AW-1 from functioning, and how I repaired them.
I just scored one at the Goodwill for 2.99. Works great but the cassette is shot. I want to fix it but I’m scared I’m going to destroy it. I may just sell it as is. Like you said it makes a great Bluetooth speaker.
WOW! I never know these types of radios existed in the 80's until I saw this video! I remember around 2001 and 2002, when Bose put many commercials on TV with the CD version of this and the changer that goes below it, with remote control, and that they manufacured these until 2017! It's amazing this type of radio was manufactured for so many years with changes modernizing them! Nice Job on the Cassette Deck!
I am watching your video using my identical unit for my sound monitor. Hopefully this will help me to repair the tape transport. The sound is still magnificent.
Apple’s systems from the same period were extremely repairable. Pretty much the opposite of today’s Apple systems. Now I’m wondering how repairable Bose systems are these days…
I have 2 similar machines but mine are the CD player versions.one whilst repairing the laser running rails on the cd decided it was going to pack in completely.these are not always fun to repair
I visit a lot of thrift stores in my area...TWO different ones I go to have this model and refuse to sell them as they keep them for in-store use. They are so impressive looking but they never want to sell them. They sure sound great. I don't think they use the cassette portion, just the radio or aux.
I always hated bose stuff until I just got an old model wave radio today. it SOUNDS GREAT, when it is working. sue had it sitting in front of a window and it got water in it for a while, and it was very loud and buzzy most of the time. I took it apart and found a bunch of corrosion on the board and I cleaned that up the best I could and it seems to be working okay now, luckily it was not to the point of the board or components being damaged. It seems to be working now and has been on for a few hours, so hopefully that took care of it.
Just picked one up a couple days ago, got around to fixing the cassette deck today. This video helped a tonne!! All i had to do was clean and lubricate the post at 21:50. Rewind and fast forward were being a little tricky but they had some gummed up grease i had to clean and lubricate but they’re working great now. Rubber bands were shockingly in really good condition with no oxidation and playback speed. My unit was made on June 15 1990, i guess the owner just took really great condition of it and had it stores in a stable environment, the thing only had like 1 scratch on it. I did see your comment saying it gave out after a couple weeks, hopefully mine can keep trucking along longer than that :/ love cassettes but they’re such a bad technology always something breaking on them
What you can actually do to test stereos on RU-vid without getting slapped with a legitimate claim is use GarageBand to create a short song using several Apple loops. Apple's license agreement stipulates that you can do whatever you want with the composition you made, as long as you don't distribute individual loops. I'd keep a copy of the project anyways, because you may still get false copyright claims (which are easy to dispute). You can also find creative commons music online that you can use without issue, but make sure to read the individual terms of each song.
Hi. As I type this I have the identical unit apart on the bench. I gave it new belts and lubed. Still same issue. When you press Play the heads and pinch roller assembly is not going far enough forward to engage the pinch/capstan, and then after a couple seconds it goes into stop. For the life of me I can't see why. I am seasoned in repairs by the way. Thanks.
I have the very same model bought new in the 80s. I was playing cassettes in it until just a couple of years ago. Since I have so many cassette I would like to have it fixed. Watching your process confirmed it's beyond me.
Polyolefin grease I believe... it didn't work in the end, could never get the mechanism to reliably function. I donated the stereo to Savers after giving up on it.
