1989 Lincoln Town Car - Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Malfunction

I have been having problems with my Lincoln Town Car. It revs on its own and it will even accelerate by itself.
JULY 25 UPDATE: Just the day after uploading the video, I may have discovered the cause of my problem: A bad catalytic converter. Now I'm not 100% sure this is the problem, but it seems to be more likely than the IAC Valve. I am going to see about getting straight pipes put on.
JULY 30 UPDATE: Fixed today. It was the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) that was causing the problem. All we had to do was unplug the old on and plug in a new one.

The tps sensor is located on the very top of the throttle body. Its a flat black piece with 2 screws holding it down and a wire harness with a 3 pin terminal with 3 wires.

I'm going to look at a 1989 Lincoln Mark Vll LSC that has sat for the past few years. I believe it has the 225hp HO engine. The owner, who is a mechanic of sorts, says it runs rough and he can't figure it out. He said people have told him it could be a vacuum line under the intake manifold. I'm thinking that, and a dirty fuel system for the gas turning bad from sitting. Also, if that is a distributor engine rather than an electronic system, the timing could be way off due to it being loose. What do you and others here think it could be. What are the Usual Suspects?

I have an 89 TC. My problem was skipping at certain speeds. At idle it would miss and skip before going into 3rd. On the highway it would skip at 65 mph and use tons of gas. It wasn't a constant skip but more of a vacuum skip. I started with high performance plugs wires and button cap. Then fuel filter, egr, and aic. Then egr switch and tps......nothing! Tried the map sensor and success! I hope this helps everyone because it took me 7 months to figure it out.

i might have to try that cause my 89 mgm idels ruff when it wants to. mostly on hot day but i have done eveything you have done but replace the map sensor. i am right at year and 3 months on trying to fix it.

How would I find & replace a vacuum leak on my 89 TC? If I try to accelerate fast(punch), it hesitates, & I feel a spurt in the peddle, & it takes off from there. I been doing everything I could think of to get rid of it. I just replaced my cat, muffler, added a resonator. Adjusted the kick down cable, etc. I've replaced the TPS, MAF or MAP sensor, ignition coil, spark plugs, spark plug wires. etc. But I never checked for a vacuum leak, cuz I really don't know how. Can u help? Thanks in advance..

It's been fixed. It was the indeed the TP sensor.

The vacuum line you're looking for is under the top half of intake. You remove the top half and the hose runs down the channel.

My 1989 TC starts then stalls on its own. Is it the MAP sensor? If so, where is it located on the '89? Any help from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks

@@inventor1214 All I did so far was to spray some throttle body cleaner into the IAC valve and run a Q-tip in there. I have a new gasket and socket to remove and re-set it but did not do that yet. So far it has been good enough without stalling anymore. It still needs a better cleaning however it is such a tight area to work and remove the thing I do not want to mess with it just yet.

No, I sold it last July. The girl that bought it blew it up earlier this year and sold it to a junkyard for $200. :(

@@americanGTA I needed a newer more reliable vehicle and I wanted something faster. I got an 07 F250 and I put more money into repairing it in the first few months than I did with the Lincoln in 5 years! I got the truck in June and the transmission went out in October. $5k to replace it.
