Idk if anyone was beating the 49ers in 1989, the 49ers team in 1990 despite 14 wins was winning much closer games and seemed to lose a little bit of its edge from the previous two SB years. The 1989 and 1990 Giants were both overachieving teams in the toughest division in football, the Eagles and Redskins were arguably as talented, if not more talented than the Gmen. Phil Simms was the MVP of this team, again Cunningham and Rypien were more talented. The Giants ran first and second down and it was always Simms job to convert on 3rd down. Simms had to stand in the pocket to the final nanoseconds to deliver the ball, he was understated like his teammmates but undeniably tough. The Gary Reasons hit on Humphrey at the goal line is my greatest memory of the 89 Giants. They ran the ball well, played great defense, did not make mistakes. They did enough of everything well to win the division. In that playoff vs the Rams I remember a 4th down the giants failed to convert and the Rams capitalized but even that defeat did not tarnish what was a great season for the Big Blue. I just wish my Jets would show that kind of character every once in a while
@@greatwuta Exactly. 1990 Giants were deep at every position other than maybe WR. Still hold T-o-P SB records and NFL take-away differential record. If Jumbo Eliot was healthy all year they would have won 14+ games and had homefield throughout the playoffs. The team could have been as dominant as the big 80s NFC teams, just without the pass-rush of the '86 squad.
Why were simms stats so much better in 1990. In 1989 he had a mediocre season. In 1990 , he was on his way to his best season , until that injury!! Why was he so much better in 90 ?
A good question, because they were pretty much the same team, but the 90 team was definitely different from the 86 team, where everybody went through a growth process. The one obvious factor helping Simms was that defenses were respecting Anderson more than they did in 89, when everybody thought he was washed up. Also, Belichick had the defense adjusted to Taylor losing a step (believe it or not), so that their backfield, which had been their liability with the 86 team, was now locked in with the front 7. That meant that Phil was rarely playing without the lead. You could just see him playing with a confidence he didn't quite have in 89, and that always carried over to the rest of the team. It was huge for them to start the 90 season beating the Eagles, who had given them fits the last 2 years.
It made sick that they got swept by the Eagles two years in a row. The Giants were objectively better than the Eagles, but the Eagles got in their head for some reason.

Also as great as the 1990 49ers team was they were not as good as the 1989 49ers. if you're talkin about a team that's lucky another team lost in the playoffs you should looking at the 1987 Washington Redskins who won the Superbowl that year. They were lucky the 49ers and the New Orleans Saints who were clearly better that year got upset by a Minnesota Viking team that was on a magical playoff run
