As a kid at my local card shop I had enough money for 1 pack of 89 upper deck. They were $5 at the time. A guy next to me had just bought 20 packs when I bought mine. I pulled the jr. Card and he lost his mind lol. He offered me every card he just bought for my jr. I declined his offer and now I'm 44 and still have that card.

For my 10th birthday (in 1990) my parents bought me the '89 upper deck Ken Griffey Jr card. I still have it to this day. It's my favorite bday presents I got as a kid.

I bought an '89 UD box about 8 years ago for around $100 and did exactly what these guys did to "pull a Griffey" for the first and probably only time. Just once! Had to do it. Pulled the same 8.5 as they did as it was off-center.

Dr Beckett is a Rolls Royce of the Hobby pure class, humble but a fountain of knowledge what a guy. The CardFarther on the other hand Mr no one ever put anything in alphabetical order before me you can see how he grates on the Dr. So glad CardFather didn't get the Griffey Jr and the main man did.

At the risk of oversimplifying the evolution of our hobby.... Coin and stamp collectors - at an earlier point - had 2 attributes necessary to be considered a legitimate hobby - a comprehensive checklist and price guide. Thanx to Dr Beckett and Bob Lemke (e.g.) along with Jefferson Burdick and Larry Fritsch (their checklist contribution), we're sitting here viewing one of the icons of our hobby: Dr James Beckett. Our hobby is far more than just an investment tool IMO; it gives us so much satisfaction and enjoyment.

Back in 90, I was at a card shop in my towns mall. They had 1 pack of 89 upper deck left out of a box. They wanted 5 bucks. I had 5 bucks so I bought it. The first card I saw was the griffey. My jaw dropped. There was also a Nolan Ryan in the pack.

$100 at the time. Then it dropped to $50 and now it's about $25. I seem to remember Upper Deck began to overprint them which caused the value to drop.

My dad worked for upper deck for 20 years. He told me about how upper deck would constantly make duplicate cards and sell them on eBay under fake accounts. This started when they started having financial problems.

Used to pay a buck 25 cents for a pack of upper deck in the in 89-90 used to buy multiple packs a day, I accumulated about 10 of those Ken Griffey Jr cards over a year span including multiple Juan Gonzales reversed photo error, we thought back then we would be millionaires today off these cards, I still have thousands in shoe boxes and binders never had anything graded.

I have 1 of those cards that I pulled way back when and it's still in the same hard plastic case I bought that same day maybe one of these years I'll get it graded it's pretty centered and the holo is in great shape also

Opened a box in '89 when they came out. $1 a pack didn't get a Griffey. I feel you Geoff lol! I remember taking common cards and using a pencil eraser and erasing the names or parts of the names just messing around

(I'm trying to help, excuse the blabbering) I think he's mixing up the Star brand that had Will Clark "The Future" on it. The mind of a person in a serious hobby like this, along with a career and family, the mess ups happen. I have a graded jordan cars and auto from upper deck. I haven't seen it in years. I can't remember what series. I remember partial bits. I look bc I know its 2004 to 2006. After complete retirement. I look thru ebay and never see it. I do have that Griffey tho. Graded 9.5 BGS. I had factory sets and cut several out bc there's too much I own. I really want a shop. But you have a hard time if you can't entice card manufacturers to deal straight to you. Money and large orders like D&A do works.

I bought a case of the low number, and split it with a friend, he got 5 boxes and I got 5. He got no ken out of his 5 and out of my 5 boxes i got 11 kens. I still have 1 left which I won't sell.

I opened a case about 15 years ago and some boxes had 0 Ken Griffey Jr and a few had 4 to 6 in them. Geoff have you consider using the Beckett Data Base to be added to Market Movers? If people can see the price history of a card such as the Ken Griffey jr because it would be helpful in seeing its history.

None of the 89 Upper Deck hobby boxes were sealed they only started sealing the boxes a few years later because people were searching the packs. Cut a slit behind the fold , open the bottom up and glue it back because people in general opened the pack from the top not the bottom. It's a shadey business

I can't believe Geoff reached over and grabbed the Jr. like that! So sloppily, without even asking.. I feel like the RU-vid channel got to his head at that moment. Damn that was so cringe. Geoff still no clue how to pull packs safely out of a box, goes and grabs the Griffey of off Becket's pile and it was only on top of two other cards that one and could have damaged the edges handling it like that. Nice work as well showing the Griffey Upper Deck in the lower left and then showing other rc names that would score a point and every single one being the topps rc card of those players. Wow, just sad.

Seems the concept of junk wax was lost on everyone other than Dr. Beckett. The entire point isn't about the printing volumes, but rather for the potential for value within the product. It can't be junk if there is value within. 1988 Topps = Junk wax, 1990 Upper Deck is Junk wax.... Just because there are lot of them doesn't make it "junk".
