Nice interview, but I really feel like I should put in my two cents, that charging your own family for helping them out is really not very nice. I think people in families, and even close friends, should always be willing to help each other, not just treat each other like customers. Not cool.

I hear you…. and in some cases I totally agree. If it’s a hobby, or there’s a regular exchange of value, or it’s not a business. But when it’s one persons business, it’s a different story. When I had my shop I had 8 employees. If I took up their time (or mine) doing work for free during business hours, then the business wasnt working on paying customers cars and then wouldn’t have enough money to pay the employees. My parents wanted to see my business succeed so they were happy to pay. Do I often do stuff on my own for them for free when I can? Absolutely. But parts and materials cost $ and that has to get paid somehow.
