Jon Jon surfs waves like this with a 6'2. Most of the guys were surfing boards towards the 9' end of the scale... It certainly goes to show how much surfing has progressed. I still think these guys were great surfers, and are all surfing well, just differently to this eras surfers.
the surfing of curren, elkerton, carroll and a few others surfers on this 1990 video is like 18 times better than 99% of the surfing anyone is doing these days, specially power-wise and style-wise. 90% of the pros today have cringe-inducing styles in big waves like sunset. Very few -- like john john -- can draw great beautiful lines if you ask me. Check Potzz style around 3:13, he is surfing a huge board with so much style
Yeah, but most of the waves ridden during the Sunset contests now aren't ridden from the very outside. On the smaller boards they have to catch the waves farther inside.
