I do not own any copyrights. This was recorded on VHS in the 90's. Drew Barrymore interviews on both Oprah and Arsenio Hall in 1990 discussing her book Little Girl Lost.
It's funny how she seems so serious and down when she was 15 and now that she's 40+ she seems more child like. I think she's way more happy as an adult.
She now gets to be the free child she never got to be. And a much much better mother to her beautiful daughters (: Who aren't burdened by evil, selfish, uncaring parents who use you as a paycheck. What Drew's parents did to her was child abuse. She is so strong!
@@mrsweatshirt4047 I thought it was much longer than that? It isn’t really my business, but i thought she quit everything, but maybe occasional pot here and there since she was a kid? That’s just what I’ve always heard.
Jaid institutionalised her for a year around age 13, 14 was when she won emancipation due to the psych ward admittance, this interview was done when she was 15. That alone would make anyone dark. Poor Drew. What a horrid childhood.
Yeah, I noticed she was smiling and then turned her head to her mother and the smile immediately dropped. I think they’ve since reconciled but she didn’t like that woman at all back then, huh?
Why is Oprah acting like it’s Drew’s fault? She was a child. Yeah she puts some of the blame on her mom, but it’s clearly the parent’s fault since she was getting ahold of alcohol at 9 years old.
That just blows my mind. That an 8 year old would drink two glasses of champagne. That's so dangerous giving a child that age strong alcohol. What adult would do that? Where was her mom? And before she was even 15 she was doing hard drugs, cocaine. Astonishing. This is the problem with children brought into celebrity/acting at a young age, they don't get to grow up normally. It's a familiar story, Michael Jackson was same and ended up a drug addict.
I dislike the accusatory tone Oprah had with Drew. Having an accusatory tone with Drew’s mother is appropriate. But her shady tone toward Drew bothered me.
I felt that, too. But she also complimented her ("How could you not look in the mirror and think you were beautiful?") and empathized with her ("I went through this").
I totally agree, but why would you "be ashamed to even sit there"?? It wasn't Drew's fault, so there's no reason for *her* to feel any shame/be ashamed. Her *mom* should be ashamed!
@@clockwinder2924 because they were probably high end home house party u know kids in pool give me a break my parents had couple parties we snuck alcohol her mom looks fine. You people are way too uptight kids drink remember high school lol.
@Julie Lovestrees, Sorry I didn’t mean to offend, but by her own admission she went way beyond a bit of alcohol. Also no, at nine (I wasn’t in high school at that age) my parents actually did keep an eye on my siblings and I if we were at an “adult” party (by that I mean alcohol freely flowing and swimming pools, that can lead to drowning.etc) I wasn’t referring to parties for 15 year olds. I apologise if it makes me uptight to wish to keep a decent amount of supervision on a child that is under ten. (Yes, I know she’s older than that here, it’s not the age I was referring to.) Still, I come more from a place of sadness rather than judgment and I do apologise if it came across as such. Also, by homeschooling, I mean that the Barrymores are wealthy, so surely something could have been done about the relentless bullying that Drew referred to. Aren’t our children our most precious people that we must take care of?
@deekat3279 That’s good, my parents worked too. You don’t have to be wealthy to homeschool, nor do I think it’s necessary. It’s just she said being bullied lead to her drug use. The Barrymores are an acting legacy family, so if she was being bullied, maybe they could of afforded to change her school. Not accusing her mother of this, but who bought her the drugs and alcohol if she didn’t have her own money? Please don’t get me wrong, I’m the same age as Drew and I grew up a big Drew Barrymore fan and I still enjoy her movies. I just remember, even as a child, being shocked that she was allowed to be out behaving like that (because of her self admitted drug addiction,) I don’t judge addicts and I admire how she’s put her life back together, but her parents should have kept a better eye on a child who was only nine years old.
She’s said many times in later years that she was still very much an addict here. This was her redemption tour but her recovery came years later. I’m not putting her down either, I think she’s an incredible human being, I just think that piece of information makes her even more extraordinary.
It was all meant to happen. Drew grew into a much stronger person because of all of that. I'm sure even she recognizes that now and wouldn't change a thing about her past. We always grow the strongest through the most challenging times in life. Those challenges are put into our paths for a reason.
I mean, what kind of "adult parties" are we talking about? I daresay, if you're at an all adult party full of untrustworthy people doing shady things and you need to worry about your child being unsupervised there, they shouldn't even be there in the first place! If you're at, say, a wedding or a housewarming party or cookout or some other type of gathering that might very well have alcohol, that's an "adult party" but you aren't going to hover over your kids. Because almost no parent suspects they need to keep watch out for their child drinking at NINE. Did this woman fall short as a parent? Absolutely, inarguably. But I don't think it's negligence for a child to run around having fun at a social gathering.
Wow lets talk about Arsenio's interview. He was sooo nice towards Drew. And so sympathetic wow. At the end he said for her to call him if she needed help. His entire interview was refreshing. I wonder if they are still cool.
When anyone has a spirit as bright as Drew's, people will try and do anything they can to extinguish it. She's clearly suffering so much here. Someone this sweet was made to feel like she was a misguided, "bad girl". Anyone in her situation would have spiraled. I hate that people didn't give her the love and comfort she needed and she had to try and numb herself to survive. Thank God, she survived.
You gotta appreciate how raw, real and honest she is. That takes alot of courage to be out there in the public talking everyone through your rehab. You'd think that younger generations of struggling actors that came after her would look at her and realize that they can work it out too.
I think regardless of her example, I think people get too into their own world in the industry so if they become addicted i can imagine it can be extra hard to ground yourself.
Drew's face lit up at the mention of Steven Spilberg. She loved him very much. She felt that he was the first person who cared about her. I take he was like the father she never had.
she said that when he found out that she posed for playboy, he had all of the images of her in the magazine digitally editied to clothe her! 😝 If that doesnt scream "dad energy"... lol
@@tetflaminiano1674 totally. what kind of a grown adult would make an 8 yr old girl drink 2 glasses of champagne? If doing that didn't have any ulterior motives, then thats just plainly immature. People at the parties could've gotten her drunk on purpose.
That we know of. If I were betting I would say a lot of horrible things happened. She still doesn't speak to her mother. Shes an awsome person and these experiences have made her who she is today. Strong as F-ck
How can you help but be judgmental & negative to a mother who admits that she lets her 9 year old go her way at adult Hollywood parties? I'd be judgmental & negative to the mother too.
@@TrungNguyen-zj1rz she was judgejudgemental toward drew too. She's just got a mean style of interview. Always has. Arsenio doesn't judge because we never know until we're in that person's shoes and it's only God's job to judge. We're all sinners. We all harm others at one point or another. We all make mistakes and must grow. Its important to be merciful. Jesus said God's merciful. But we have to repent and keep trying. Drew is forgiving too. Maybe mom was suffering mental health issues. Doesn't make it OK. AT ALL and it needs intervention and consequences but there's a difference between recognizing wrong doing and thinking it's our job f poo r of us to punish and judge others. Example. My boyfriend beats me. I must recognize he's abusive and get out. Not stay around and make him understand how bad he is and try to make him fix it or shame him to others or himself. The first part is useful. The second not so much. Maybe pies charges if it doesn't put you in further danger (my opinion it does with psychopaths).... That's just my opinion though for all that!
@@youtubingbabs I agree with everything you've said, which I think are more your values than mere opinions. I was raised religiously. But I don't buy into all that horrible bullshit about original sin. I do believe in God, and I pray every day. But only because it works!
She’s so articulate and eloquent. Such a sweet energy and beautiful wounded soul who I am amazed survived the he’ll she went through. So happy she has succeeded in her life. She’s obviously very intelligent
Drew is extraordinary. Her hurts took her to a dark place, but her intelligence and talents took her out of it. She is an adorable person. She brightens my day with her wonderful Show. She is showing the way for people who have taken a dark way of life and are searching for the Light. Drew is remarkable. She is a very lovable person. May God bless her always. 😇✝️
She’s such a beautiful baby girl. ❤️ She needed guidance and protection at that young age. 🙁 Thankfully she was strong enough to turn it all around and become the woman she is today. Drew, you are loved and admired by many. 👍❤️😘🌹
I wish Sinead O'Connor could have gone the same path and defeat her demons and prove everyone wrong! ❤🩹 I still love her and hope she'll find happiness... Everyone's path's different. She's an extraordinary woman!
Last night I saw a clip from Johnny Carson with Drew when she was 7, and today I saw this. What a dramatic change in the life and times of such a beautiful and talented young lady.
I alway,s wanted to buy her book Little Girl lost for many years now i see alot of myself un her all m'y life her show is amazing theres only one Drew Barrymore 💖✨
Admirable? Her mother was neglectful and parentified her. She abandoned her daughter to the debauchery and corruption of Hollywood, she’s lucky her daughter wasn’t molested..if she wasn’t.
Aisling SMITH I don't think she's directing aggressiveness to Drew; I think it's more she's annoyed that Jaid wasn't there to see what Drew was up to. Either way, Oprah isn't being mean to either of them. Before anything is recorded, she talks to everyone involved about the questions she'll be asking, etc. Nothing wrong with the way Oprah did/does her shows. ❤️ I know a lot of people mention how mean or rude she is to her guests, but I've never seen it. I've been watching her since I was a baby in the '80s. 😊
Hardly vicious, let's not exaggerate. Oprah was in her right mind to be furious that this abuse and neglect happened to this child right in front of her, with her witless mother sitting there taking no responsibility. Who wouldn't be angry to see that? If you want to see vicious watch Diane Sawyer interview a lone, teenaged Britney Spears in the early 2000s
I love how the mom acts she didn’t know that’s what was going on. You took her to the party you clearly cared more about your own social life than the safety of your child. She sent home with you you couldn’t tell she had alcohol? Come on!
I'm guessing you're under the age of 40? There really wasn't any such thing as Social Services like there is today. Even so, kids in Hollywood still aren't protected
If you can read Drew's book Little Girl Lost, it's really sad, but beautiful at the same time. I've read it several times and it helps me to go on. Thank you Drew ❤️📖
Drew seems such a sweet person. She moved me to tears when she spoke of her "father" with understanding and no bitterness at all. So sad - poor little girl! All children deserve to have two parents who love, protect and care for them. Arsenio was genuinely caring and a great interviewer. Oprah not so much and seemed to talk down to Drew and her mom as if they were beneath her. Very odd, given her own problems...
Arsenio is such a compassionate, sweet interviewer. I can tell he made her feel so much more comfortable than she otherwise would have been. I’m so impressed.
Yes, I also watched his interview with Sinead O'Connor, and he literally adjusts his voice and speaks in a gentle and calm way to make hurt and abused girls feel safe. He's really kind and extraordinary and you can feel he's very genuine!
Drew was so different here. I used to watch her E True Hollywood story, so I knew she had a horrific childhood with her mother, but the contrast of herself as an adult, to a teenager is so stark. I’m glad she’s much happier and free now.
This is a feedback has really healed my heart darling, I am grateful, thank you so much for your support and prayers to my career 😇 where are you watching from?
It sounds more like a woman disappointed at a woman who was neglecting her child and allowing her kid to basically be taken advantage of by an industry that obviously didn’t have her best interests in mind just so she’d make money via her daughter.
And Oprah is not part of that "industry?" SMH! Come on!! Oprah does not give two 💩 's about children, well unless they're for dinner and then I'm betting she prefers white meat. 😒
yeah its a little late to play the hard judgy parent in an interview that'S about re-playing things and digging in on the roots of the problems. Comes off as a little stupid but I guess that'S what people expected from her back then. She's not like that later in her career
Oh come on. The scolding pose in one-on-one interviews is a daytime talk show standard, Phil Donahue did it before Oprah, Dr Phil does it today. The hosts know it's schtick, but their idiotic audience demands it, especially on any issue concerning children's lives.
Heartbreaking, but so inspiring to see how she took control of her life and turned it ALL around. I just love this girl, always have been rooting for her, and so thrilled with her successes. Drew, you've come a long way, baby!
What a beautiful young woman. I'm not talking about her appearance. I wish there were more people in the world with her kind of grace and graciousness.
❤❤thank you so much for your 😅whooping notification and I sincerely appreciate you streaming my contents here on the RU-vid channels where are you watching from ??
I'm from UK born in 92 I'm not sure who the male talk show host was but made me tear up it seemed like he really was rooting for her and he said it was important to have her on. He treated her with kindness, respect and dignity. I was surprised because most 80s and 90s interviews were generally quite brutal especially when you didn't see them when it was"ok" to be like that.
Wow she was so smart since childhood! It was her sharp mind that helped her get back on her feet before she was doomed! I always saw her as this sunny, bubbly person, always smiling that I had no clue she has been thru all this as a child! Mad respect!!
I think Hall made a well done professional job. Just interviewing, reporting facts, getting Barrymore comfortable. He didn't, even in the slightest way, judge. Winfrey totally did.
How disgusting Oprah is for questioning Drew in the way and tone that she did. I can see the true Oprah coming through with no compassion for anyone else but herself. Thankfully Arsenio had much more understanding compassion and delicate way of interviewing Drew.. So glad that Drew managed to overcome all the issues that she had to deal with.. Sending love hugs and positive vibes to Drew... XXXXX
I had such a crush on Drew berrymore when I was younger. She is such a great person. She grew up to be one of the best show hosts in my opinion. Love her.
That yellow hair, those baby blues, the cheekbones, the dimpled smile, those legs!!! Her looks would put creators of Mattel's Barbie dolls to shame. Yet Drew believed those envious, spiteful classmates when they called her ugly.
Dtew will always be my favorite. Very intelligent even as a kid. She's soooo beautiful!!! Watching from the Philippines. I've watched her interviews when she was a kid and keep on watching again and again. Love you Drew❤❤❤❤❤
“All my problems seemed to disappear” at age of 8!! Like how in the world, not only that she used drugs and alcohol but that she had such big problems she was trying to numb at that age.
ARSENIO HALL WAS ONE OF THE BEST INTERVIEWERS AND TALK SHOW HOSTS OF HIS DAY,,, AMEN🙏🙏🙏!!! HE WAS ALSO HYSTERICALLY FUNNY 🤣😝😜,.. AND VERY INTELLIGENT AND SENSITIVE!!! I HOPE HE IS GIVEN ANOTHER TALK SHOW AND OR TELEVISION INTERVIEW SITUATION AGAIN VERY SOON🙏!!!
You know this is the PG version of her story. To me I think the mom was Waaaay more involved and knew exactly what was going on and was complicit, I think as long as Drew was working and getting paid and she got to go to these fabulous Hollywood parties then she was ok to let these things go on. "I went my way and she went her way" is not how you talk about your verrrry underage child , that's how you speak about a grown adult friend, who let's their child roam free at a party w strangers and drugs and alcohol all over the place. I'm not buying it.
Is hard to see if everyone at school is saying that you are not beautiful, and you feel hurt because of the absence of her father, and her mother because she was working or partying with her daughter, when she should be talking care of her
Alcoholism doesn't get passed through genes. Depression and other mental health disorders do. People become alcoholic because they try to self- medicate
She’s very honest wow. Drew has been one of my idols since I saw her in 51 st date with Adam Sandler. That’s when I learned about their connection and her story. I was like 14. That’s 10 years now. She’s very very strong to have been here at one point.
God bless Drew Barrymore, she got through a very rough time... so happy she can enjoy her birthdays with many true heartfelt kind friends... She pays it forward with helping others, simply love her. Have a wonderful Christmas and healthy New Year!
Bless her heart at least she realizes that it was not good for her and she made a change that is wonderful I think this absolutely wonderful that she brought her self attention to that and made a change good for you Drew Barrymore I think this fabulous it takes a lot to make a change that wonderful💕
I adore Drew Barrymore she changed her life around got clean and focused on her acting career and doing fantastic today. Thank God ! She didn't end up one of those Hollywood casualties like so many other young stars.
She was at Disneyland riding the Matterhorn when she was just 12. Crazy 80s. She pulled through though, whatever you think of her you have to give her props for not getting defeated... good for her.
