Picked up this 124000km, 1991 Honda Nighthawk 750 and decided to Scramblerize it a bit and go over the bike to make sure all is in good working condition.
* I had a brain fart for the video, it's a 1991, not 1993!
Let me know what you think!

My first bike was a 1991 Nighthawk. It was a great beginner bike for me. The styling was a bit generic but your mods have given the bike some character. Nice job on the paint work.

This is exactly what I was looking for! My brother in law and I are coming up with ideas for a back road bike that still has highway capabilities. I used to have the 650 nighthawk and later sold it to him. We were watching some custom bike builds making scrambler type bikes and I remembered the nighthawk. With the knobby tires it's perfect!

Thanks @Johannes, without a clutch you just want to avoid the city, shifting up and even down without a clutch is not too bad with good timing but starting from a stop is another story, I was lucky I could avoid most lights and stops on the way home, if I had to go through a city I would have had it towed, just too dangerous hehe

awesome work dude! I just came into a nighthawk for $350.. needs a lot of the work you did. already got the carbs rebuilt and had her fired up. so far i've fiberglass repaired side panels.. need a lot of paint, need a battery, brake overhaul, fork rebuild, tires, paint the tank.. the works. and it is my first bike lol. figured it would be satisfying to get her running and learn about it at the same time. still need a license!

This is the video I have been looking for now for some weeks, I just bought my first bike. a 2002 CB750 Nighthawk. I am in NYC and honestly hadn't had much knowledge regarding motor bikes. my first car was a stick and I've ridden bikes through out the city. this piece of machine as really just melded in the middle and feels so natural (especially considering I was very nervous at first, impulse buy, 2 weeks in and now its cozy) I still have a lot to learn, but I have also learned how one can customize a bike so I am excited to learn how to work on my bike and make it my own, I am not interested in the cafe build, looking for something more upright and cozy like this. Think even higher bars would be a nice addition? WBU? that's what I have in my sights. also since the clutch broke does that mean you rode in first gear at high rpm the whole way? I'm still learning rpm management on motorcycles so am curious. THANKS!
@Speedytrip
@Speedytrip 2 года назад
Thanks, I'm really glad this video is inspiring some to wrench on their bikes to make it their own :) I've owned many bikes, and have done small mods before, but this is the first time I spent so much time on restoring a bike and I still have plenty to learn... 100% agreed on the cafe racer trend, at 6'1", the last thing I needed is having my wrists bellow my knees hehe The tricky part of not having a clutch is starting....cause you have to push start the bike and you drop it in 1st gear while at the same time pressing the start button...then you're usually off to a jerky start, but after that I would just upshift and downshift without the clutch (upshifting is quite easy, downshifting requires really good timing as you are basically reving the engine while simultaneously dropping a gear so that it falls in place at the right rev). Glad I had watch this video a few years ago, I remembered the basics: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-viWuolNYGyI.html Fortunately I was able to pick a route that had few lights, I would slow down way ahead of time so that I could time myself with green lights and on stop signs, same thing I would slow down as much as possible without completely stopping (using brake and staying on the gas a bit). Had it happened in the city, I would have had it towed it would just be too dangerous because of the constant stop and go.

@Speedytrip
@Speedytrip 2 года назад
Thanks, glad you enjoyed! The handlebars were those on the bike when I got it, I just bought some cheap ebay risers (cause without risers, the handlebars hit the tank and that's why when previous owner dropped the bike it made a huge dent in the tank...). From experience, cheap risers do the job and are a fraction of the price of Rox Risers. For the handlebars, I'm really not sure but it might have even come off an ATV. Looks a bit like this: fortnine.ca/en/quadboss-atv-oem-replacement-handlebar But even better than handlebars and risers, are just to get handlebars that have the proper bend to clear the tank, I ordered 2 and neither of them was enough, so I ended up keeping the ones that were on the bike and just added risers.

Thanks I sold the bike, but I could recover this from a previous post: "Michelin Anakee Wilds. They are both rear tires, the rear is tubeless and the front needs a tube as there was no tubeless version in that size. Im not home at the moment but they seem to have stock sizes for front and back, its just that technically its a rear tire that has the size of the front wheel (and youll see its a TT for “tube tire”.It’s been working great so far."

I'm currently rebuilding a 1991 Nighthawk that was my late best friend who died last year from ALS. His wife asked me to get in running so she can ride. She requested the bike be black and if you can send me link of where you bought the paint and or color. Did you keep the tachometer or did you go with an aftermarket tachometer? I wanted to black out the whole bike from painting the engine , headers and exhaust. Any recommendations?
@Speedytrip
@Speedytrip 2 года назад
Hey @Joseph Estralla, sorry for your friend, his wife will certainly love whatever you make of the bike! For the colors I just grabbed satin black urethane paint on sale, then added coats of clear coat and wet sanded and polished with a car compound to a shine. Any quality black paint will do, you can even find some 1 stage paint that would save you the clear coat. I’m by no means a professional painter, I shot it from the can, in a poorly lit shed, and it came out pretty nice! As for the engine, unless you want to take it appart and powdercoat it, I wouldnt touch it as paing will most likely peal overtime, If she doesnt do much gravel roads, you could have the headers ceramic coated, but those to can chip with rocks.

@Speedytrip

Sorry it was already on the bike when I bought it and already sold the bike. I think it was a Renthal dirtbike bar, and if its flatter youll need risers to clear the tank :)
