Nascar will never top that 1992 season. I miss CBS Sports coverage on NASCAR. When they televised a race, it felt like it was a HUGE deal! Ken Squire was always so calm with this serious tone in his voice. It made for such a huge event. I really miss it.
I dunno... I mean for drama and story, the 1992 season was probably the best but I always felt the 1993 season was equally as good with the storylines, what with the deaths of two great racers and how everyone had to overcome that - especially with what Ernie did in 28 car... and nothing will ever beat the 1993 Diehard 500... I'm sorry, nothing in 1992 was ever quite that good. =P
Tony Galicia . What I liked about the 1992 season was that 5 drivers had a shot of winning the championship at the last race. The heartbreak the Davey Allison had at the end of the season. He went through more that season than any person should. Winning the Daytona 500, leading the championship, the death of his brother.Alan Kulwicki the Underbird. But I do have to agree with you about the 1993 season. Such heartache. Losing Allison and Kulwicki in off track incidents... and that 1993 Diehard 500.. Such emotion. The tributes to Davey, Neil Bonnett's crash. Jimmy Horton over the turn 1 wall, Stanley Smith's injury. Then that finish!
Bruce Wayne I was so saddened when I heard about Davey Allison's death that I dropped what I was doing to watch the Diehard 500 that year... and yet, only 20 years later, I've realized that I didn't even know him as a racer that well... so I've been trying to go back and watch some of his best races to really get to know the guy...
Irvan didn't even lead the most laps that day, Rudd did... Allison's car was better BUT Davey was hurt & handed it over to Bobby Hillin at the first caution. Had he been in the car and healthy, he probably wins this race. Remember, he dominated & won the Spring Winston 500...
@@vinewood8295 I doubt it. Didn't matter who was driving. Pit crew messed up and got Bobby out way behind the 22 and 4. 28 was the fastest car on the track at the end but the pit crew put him too far behind. Sure miss Davey though.
He and Dale Earnhardt Sr. made me love NASCAR. Davey was on the path to greatness before his sudden death. He truly was amazing. That Havoline 28 car was the most beautiful in all of NASCAR, past or present.
Back then they could still run oval shaped exhaust rather than the wide, flat exhaust they do now. And they still used H-pipes rather than X-pipes. X-pipes are better for high rpms, but the H-pipes have such a deeper, American V8 sound.
You had all the top companies in America wanting to sponsor and you had great aggressive drivers. Now days, these guys want to just ride along until the end. It's very weak now.

Also don't forget Darrell waltrip car was sandwiched in between Davey Allison's car and the green Quaker State car of Brett bodine, that's why Darrell Waltrip went to download to begin with. Neil bonnett even said when Darrell Waltrip went down Davey Allison took a defensive position and they even highlighted the gap between Davey Allison's car and Kyle Petty's car. There was no reason for Davey Allison to come down and cut in front of Darrell Waltrip, all Davey Allison had to do was drive straight.
Final race for Richard Petty at Talladega. He finished 15th, 1 lap down. At 1 point, Dale Earnhardt (who dropped out of the race because of engine issues) was on stand by for relief, but Petty ultimately finished the race
Almost no fans would show up and stay in the stands. It would cost the track loads of money. Not just that, it's terribly unhealthy for the drivers and puts a large strain on the cars. I'm all for pushing those two to their limits, but summer 'dega races always seemed a step to far for me, espically considering how hot it already gets in those cars.
ok, considering they had sellout crowds backs then i don't think anything would change, besides they already have a huge attendance loss, and when people consume a ton of alchohol i don't think they can feel how hot it is, the drivers would be the main concern
It all started with the wildfires of 1998 that pushed the event to a night race. It was such a success, they decided to keep it at night. They were skeptical of the lights and renovations after 1997, however after 20 years I would say it's still working. Granted no where near what it was before Brian France got his claws into it.
Your talking about the summer Daytona race. The 98 race was moved to the fall because of the fires & that was the first night NASCAR race at Daytona, Jeff Gordon won it & the next year it was moved back to 4rth of July weekend. The Dega race moved to the fall because of the summer heat & humidity, I think the first fall Dega race was the 97 Diehard 500 won by Terry Labonte but memory fades so i'm not 100% sure...
Wow!!!, Old Ernie was awsome during this race. I sure miss the Kodak racing team. Ernir Irvan and Stirling Marlin made a name for themselves when they drove for this team.
We were at dega the following week for the Diehard 500 and yes indeed DW got the blame for something the Davey Allison did... Davey went to block too late and that's what caused that wreck... I was always a fan of Bobby Allison but his comments made me think Bobby watch the replay please...?

The comment Bobby Allison made at the beginning of this broadcast is nothing more than feelings about yesteryear's rivalries. Bc if u watch the replay, Davey came down and blocked Darrell. Darrell couldn't go down any further. He went further down to avoid Davey, he went down further than I would've. Could Darrell have lifted and got back in line, sure. But that's not how responsibility, it was Davey's to hold his line. If you block, it try to block, you know you're taking the risk of wrecking yourself off the bumper off the drivers 6 your blocking.

There were several teams that used what bodies they could get their hands on. Several smaller teams (if I remember correctly) mainly ran Oldsmobiles and were using older bodies. The super speedways favored the lumina and t bird areo packages. So they ran them. 94 team did this too.
I believe you're referring to the lap 11 restart. There were two rules in place at the time that were in play there. Back then, the lines were formed with lead cars in one lane and lapped cars in the other. (On tracks >= 1 mile in length, lapped cars would restart on the inside; < 1 mi and they restarted on the outside.) The exception to this rule was if a restart occurred within the final 10 laps of the race, in which case the restart was strictly single-file with all lapped cars starting behind the lead lap cars. On lap 11, there was only one car that was not on the lead lap, Ernie Irvan. However, Irvan had received an infraction for speeding on pit road exit. The penalty at the time for a pit road speed limit violation under the yellow flag was to restart at the tail end of the longest line. Hence, there was only one line for the restart. Edit: I've since learned there was also a rule that double-file restarts would not begin until the leader had begun lapping cars on the track under actual racing conditions -- not just cars dropping off to the pits with problems -- so that was probably the case here.
@johncalla2151 when I was a kid I remember a Martinsville race and Mike Joy, Larry Mac, and DW were confused by the rules because somebody went a lap down in the pits but nobody else was a lap down, this race was Martinsville spring 2005.
Richard petty needed a replace driver he asked if dale earnhardt would drive it since earnhardt was out of the race earnhardt didn't want to do it I thought what a jerk move and lazy I would have loved to drive that famous 43
First of all Dale wouldn't have fit in Petty's car. Petty sat really close to the wheel and Dale say further back. Dale didn't feel comfortable in his car in a racing situation. Driving his car testing is one thing, plus what would Dale have gained from it? Nothing...
Actually you're wrong Travis Dale Earnhardt after his car had engine problems was waiting to be a substitute driver for Richard Petty, but Richard Petty toughened it out and stayed in the car. Actually know what you're talking about before you comment.
Look like to me Davey Allison tried to block Darrell waltrip and Darrell waltrip just touched him. You can clearly see Darrell Waltrip car go to the other side you can clearly see Davey Allison's car coming front of Darrell waltrip and kind of blocks Darrell waltrip and Darrell waltrip taps his bumper. Also the cars at the time are going 180 plus miles an hour so.
Also another thing Brett bordine's green Quaker State car initially bumped Darrell waltrip. Darrell waltrip was sandwiched in between Davey Allison's car and Brett bodine car that's why Darrell waltrip moved to the outside. Then when Darrell waltrip moved to the outside Davey came down in front of him.
