Some amazing gems from different martial arts competitions. We first look at Sabaki Challenge from 1992 that uses what's called Enshin Kaikan Karate rules. It looks similar to Kyokushin. We then go to 1981 to watch a little bit of the Australasia Kung Fu Championships. Let's see what good and not so good things we can see from a martial arts perspective! Let us know which matches were your favorite!
The video(s) we critiqued:
• Sabaki Challenge '92 F...
• Australasian Kung Fu C...

In addition to incorporating throws from Judo, Enshin also places a much higher emphasis on lateral movement & footwork than Kyokushin does (at least on paper). There are certain rules about what kind of clinch grips and throws are permitted if I recall.

Love you channel man. So glad I found it early this year or so. I don’t know why but I don’t have video of any of my fights. It didn’t occur to me and so many were last minute. No face striking was ridiculous. Even competing at 16 or 17 I felt stupid for even having to do those at smaller events. Sanshou was the most common full contact we came across. (Now called Sanda or Sandou?) along with Shoot. I was mostly active late 90’s and into the early 2000’s. Did my share of point fighting though I was never into it. Did it for the studio when younger. Felt too Karate Kid… :) Trained from 8 to 24 or so 4-5 days a week and taught for years.broke my back and that was that. Snowboarding… I was born a few year too early before the real fun began. This really shows how good high definition video is now too. Lol. I love all the variety and vids you find. Thanks so much! - P

since Kyokushin was a bare knuckle system, alot of Oyama's students always went home with faces that look like mashed potatoes and eventually alot of those students left because of that. @@kermit1211 Yes bro, you are so right about Masutatsu Oyama, it was exactly as you wrote it. Kudo seems to have solved this problem with a proper headgear with face protection. I think "Mas" Oyama Sensei had not the same technical possibilities in those early years of Kyokushin to develop a good headgear with some good face protection. I still hate Kyokushin and all the other styles from that lineage. I left Ashihara Karate because of this ruleset of no punching on the face at all. I changed simply my style to Kickboxing and JKD and solved the problem that way. A good martial art should not have some silly restrictions, that can be solved with some brainstorming like the guys in KUDO did. I wish you all the best Kermit. You're not meant to stay at trapping range for entended periods of time. It's about learning to have more control in the transitions other arts seek to skip with risky timing. It's for getting the better grip or striking position while going in or out. It's even useful while fighting for grips or short strikes on the ground against or from the guard.

You can use it momentarily to set up strikes or your following grappling, but it's not like you are about to chi sao or tui shou the **ck out of someone. If you do that you open yourself up for countermeassures and that's what so many people that haven't properly sparred with their style don't get.

The thing with those Kyokushin tournaments, they often were "open tournaments" so as long as you respected the rules you could participate, like one year this kung fu school had students take part, and they didn't do very well, and later, years after i stopped doing it, i heard that there was a team from beijing who took part in one of the open tournaments and most of these guys were from sanda, and they did very well

The rules are changing in the sabaki challenge and therefore Enshin Karate. From Mike Ninomiya (son of the founder): “Full-contact hand strikes to the body and head while standing are permitted. Punches and knees to the head are prohibited. Grabbing (one side of the body) while standing for up to three seconds is allowed. Ground fighting is allowed after a fighter goes down as long as the takedown, throw or sweep is legal. No striking is permitted while on the ground. A fight is won by knockout, submission or points.” I hope this helps. :-)

I think the lack of punching to the face in Kyokushin karate is due to the fact that it's bare knuckle fighting and punching to the face bare knuckle cause serious cuts and bleeding as well as resulting in broken fingers... I could be wrong though but for me that makes a lot of sense because it even exists in bare knuckle boxing, I think the difference is that they are allowed to, just that they don't do it much because of said broken finger problem

The second half was better but also I wonder if half of the fighters were kickboxers more than Wing Chun practitioners. "Sloppy" or more like flailing and wavey isn't necessarily a bad thing in a fight, it does't matter as much as some purists make it out to be or can even if a conscious choice in style be a source of hard to read confusion for the opponent. Telegraphing is detrimental of course but the two aren't necessarily linked. Applying pressure is also a cause of the waveyness and pressure is going to make things difficult for the opponent. I still think, despite all we've seen that Wing Chun done right does work, if trained right and combined with some other Arts. But you can't have a glass jaw, you have to be able to take a punch, or many to set up the situations where it works. In the video there is even a chain punch done, so it can be done under pressure. It doesn't result in a knockout but it does create pushback. This is true for Aikido or Judo as well that I trained (among other things) and is't a jab at Wing Chun that it needs to be combined with other arts. Every art does. The greatest trouble they, or basically all single discipline fighters get in is when they meet an MMA fighter who knows more than one, even parts of many.

Dude, Kyokushin and the other styles like Ashihara, Enshin and Yoshukai do not compare their rulesets to Kickboxing. The main reason punches to the face are not allowed in Kyokushin-like rulesets: They do not wear gloves. Bareknuckle and punching to the face means that you sooner or later mess up your face and your hands, only having a short career. But when fighters from Kyokushin-based styles train for Kickboxing, they are doing fine. Don't forget that the Kickboxing ruleset of "K1" which is used nowadays for most Kickboxing-Fights, was invented by a Kyokushin/Seidokaikan-Karateka, that also "Dutch Kicboxing" as a "style" was heavily based on Kyokushin.

Nope it's about rithm. By removing face punching the distance of the fight decreases and the rithm of the fight becomes mutch more intense, in Kyokushin is the toughest to win, and the volume of strikes in matches is i think the higest in all martial arts. That is good because it teaches how to deal with strikes at close range witch often happend in self defence situation, also, the footwork in that range is usefull for close quarters self defence. For head strikes, they tecnically do practice with them, it's only the competition rules that do not allow them because of that tough wins mentality

These guys are bloody rookies and they don't know what they are doing, no fighting experience at all, there is not a shimmer of Wing Chun as an martial art, it's just another silly streetfight between two bloody teenagers imo. A good Boxer or Kickboxer with some experience would clubber their head off in 30 seconds man. The Kyokushin fights with their awesome throws are way more better then these Wing Chun fights....:). On the other hand, if these so called Wing Chun lads in this video had a fight with those Kyokushin Fighters, oh bro, K.O. in the first round for the Karate guys. They are way better than these young Kung Fu rookies. To see such kind of video, yeah, that would be amusing.....

I'm kinda disheartened when the people with sloppier technique wins... especially wing chun cuz that's what I practice.

Could you send us some footage of the type of wing chun you practice?

In the Wing chun matches i see too much uppercuts , hooks and circular kicks. Seems more a kickboxing match

basically, everything you know about wing chun is from Ip Man and the internet

In wing chun there are uppercuts and hooks.actually in all martial arts they exist it’s not secret techniques that only boxing has…wake up and don’t think that wing chun in real fight seems like in the moves .moves are not real life

@Casshern Casshern oh no!! Real fights are not like movie fights? My whole world shattered 😂😂. You are correct. Wing chun does have uppercuts and hooks. They are in the forms. And fights are always chaotic specially on the streets. Actually the wc guys weren't that bad. They tried to use what they learned and obviously they sparred beforehand... not the best but they were okay

The fun thing about kyokushin is theyre so proud of that rigorous hard body training they do and at the end of the day cant fight any better than someone that does point karate

"Wing Chun" looks a lot like two completely untrained guys in a street fight.

This is what Bruce Lee was saying , why does this not count ? In a real fight everything count.too many rules that don't make sense.

Every real martial art fight I've seen that isn't MMA or boxing starts off like the movies but ends up looking like 2 little girls smacking each other with flailing arms that aren't causing any damage

Sounds like you haven't seen very many. There are tons karate matches that end with vicious ko s to the body or head. Even with head protections on. Some kyoshukin matches look like jokes but others throw crushing kicks. In general the most real karate matches I've seen are from Europe or Latin America. Japan and the US not so much. Especially Japan. I think all the tough Japanese karate guys go into other sports like mma or kickboxing

How long have uou been following this channel? Check the videos on Wing Chun working, others such as Gabriel Kanah's fights, Qi Lala, Ishak Sloan, etc. All those look pretty solid from start to finish.
