Amazing sound. The haulage company I worked for as a workshop helper had several ERFs, but my favourites were a C series with an L10 and an E8 converted to a 14 litre. Fantastic trucks to work on too.
Is the bark / dose noise from the exhaust when you lift off the gas caused by the dump pipe, if so did you fabricate it intentionally to produce the sound? I have been researching endlessly trying to find what causes this noise in turbo diesels, the most I can conclude is that it usually happens when you have a sharp 90 degree angled dump pipe?
what do you mean by dump pipe? the exhaust stack up the back of the cab has a mitred 90degree bend at the bottom, this exhaust was just made from parts we had lay about. If you are on about the 'coooo' noise when I let off the throttle then look on my video of my purple cummins powered land rover that does it loudly and that has two 90 degree bends in the exhaust
***** In Australia the pipe leading outwards of the turbine housing that connects to the exhaust we call the dump pipe. Yeah I have watched that as well and it makes the same 'cocoo' noise. Im just trying to figure out what exactly creates the sound. It caught my attention when you mentioned you had a 90 degree 'mitre' cut in your exhaust as I already know that a company in Australia has a 90 degree dump pipe that will create the sound where no regularly type of dump pipe will (eg a bellmouth) (www.dencodiesel.com/3954-thickbox_default/tdm157-2-5-x-90-vband-dump-pipe.jpg). Seems as though sharp mitre cut or sudden changes in exhaust angle create the sound.
Ben Isaac that downpipe (dump pipe) looks ideal for my land rover actually! On the ERF in this video its standard exhaust (which has several 90 degree bends in) then it goes into the bottom of the stack pipe then a mitred 90 degree angle upwards. The cummins powered 90 comes out the turbo then 90 degrees downwards into 3" pipe then 90 degrees backwards then 90 degrees to the passenger side (left) then 90 degrees backwards then slope up into a Y with two 2.5" pipes. hope this helps!
***** Thanks for the info! I can't recommend the denco pipe, its only 2.5" big and is incredibly restrictive compared to a bellmouth design. People over here only buy the pipe / whole kit because it creates the cocoo sound haha . Its out of a kit for the TD42 Patrols over here.
L10 doesnt pull like the N14 or M11 down the low revs, need to keep them lit but sounds like its revving harder than it is. It was definitely noisier on higher revs as it had a piercing bark!
***** it does sound awsome but you are revving far to high- near enough to the red line which does an engine no good and so what if it don't pull as well as an n14 or m11- treat it with respect - not like a boy racer- there aren't many left on the roads
burghilll1979 It wasnt revving to the redline, just the exhaust that makes it sound like that. My truck ill drive it how i like cause im the one with the spanners
Need to ditch that exhaust, it is horrible. The exhaust brake sounds like a vicar sneezing. The little Cummi needs to rasp and growl. My mate owned a 1981 Bristol VR Double Decker Bus with a Leyland 680, my god didn,t that sound AWESOME, an elbow joint in the exhaust broke that old ,680 barked and rasped enough to wake the dead a MONSTER. Get a chance and Google up Fuel Plane, a 1943 Curtiss Commando lifting off a dirt strip in Alaska and hear REAL NOISE from two Pratt&Whitney R-2800-51 Radials, Imagine a Harley Davidson Knucklehead Motor Bike on Weed, you,ll soon get the message,
Hello Atlantean Lads ,does your motor wake the dead and blot out the sun. All respectable Leyland680,s must be LOUD!!!!.please email vid of your bus with the Leopard exhaust barking, would be much appreciated. from oldboilerdog TheAtlanteanLads
+enginelover1 i know !!!!! the little L10 is Awesome, but many a good engine is ruined by a crap exhaust system , the ERF still sounds like a moped. If you want to hear an L10 in anger Google up 1989 International Harvester 1700 Tipper working hard in Jamaica, and listen for the turbo whooping when the driver backs off the throttle, that is how a an L10 should sound.
+Nick Steggel Sorry but its a very poorly built truck with virtually no quality control. Plastic cab with huge door gaps and ill fitting panel work and the typical ERF way of thinking, all manner of engines/gearbox's and axles, none actually built by ERF themselves.. They went out of buisness for a reason..
