My parents had 2 of these growing up. Not wagons. But yes, VB is correct, when new, the styling on these was phenominal. Very space ship-esque. Love the color VB. Thats a score in my book.
My sister has always liked station wagons, especially the Ford Taurus. I remember her always having one. The last one she bought new was a 1995. It was the basic model much like yours with everything you needed--and not much more. It is currently wasting away in her backyard. This was a nice flashback.
I got a 1986 ford taurus LX in nice dark blue with matching color interior. It had 391,000 miles on and it still run and drive like brand new for free.
My dad owned two when I was a kid. I loved the rear facing seats in the trunk! I remember sitting back there with friends and waving at drivers behind us. Blast from the past!
Bob - I know that feeling upon seeing a Ford Taurus for the first time in 1986. It pulled in to the high school parking lot, and I was like, “what the h…l is this?”. It looked like something off the set of Battlestar Galactica. They became ubiquitous over the next couple of decades. The Taurus was definitely a game changer.
I have a 1995 Ford Taurus GL wagon as my daily driver. It has 66,000 original miles on it and the only thing I had to do was replace an AC line and reseal the engine and replace the water pump and of course a few front motor mounts which seem to be a weak link in the engine mounting system and it's been an awesome daily driver that I don't worry about getting door dings or ever getting left stranded as the darn thing is so reliable for local and 1000 mile trips. Nice content! ✌️🇺🇸
Ever since about year 2000, all cars stopped having that velvet material on the seats, and they switched to this really harsh rough fabric that feels like sand paper. I miss the soft velvet seats we used to have in cars
I might just have to do a video of my Taurus. I bought my light blue 1993 Taurus GL with 3.8L back in fall of 2007 with about 60k on it. Currently has about 105k on it. Primary car from 2007 to 2012. Been garaged the whole time. Swapped out the instrument panel with one from a Sable and now has a working tach. Minor rust, but better shape than this one. Has different rims. I live in the Duluth, MN area, and see maybe 4 others from this era around. About 3-4 years ago, it developed a major leak. Turned out to be the transmission. Did cost over $2k to rebuild it, as it was going to need it anyways. Works fine since then. My other car is an EV, and its hard to drive this one much as it costs 15 to 20 times as much for fuel costs.
I wish bought cars for their need, not for style or fashion. SUVs are the fashion must of the moment. But basically, people only use them for A to B, within paved roads. Wagons would be much better, would save a lot more gas and would look quite stunning, as they did in the past. In the future(God knows when) unborn people of today will ask why the hell we bought SUVS, if not for going into the mud. And if they ever try to do it with the major part of SUVs, they will get stuck pretty much anywhere.
Literally saw a white 1993-1995 Ford Taurus GL sedan earlier today and was being driven by an old lady!!! It was clean, had all of its original wheel covers and it still had it's original license plate from 30 years ago!!!
I love cars like that. They don't make them like they used to. I drive a 1985 Oldsmobile and I have put so much money into it just because of the driving experience
My dad used to own a 1985 Oldsmobile 2 door Cutlass Supreme, back in 94 he traded it in for a 85 Ford Taurus. So both of these cars are very special to me . But finding them in good shape is kind of hard nowadays
As someone who wants to find, save, and restore a 1986 Ford Taurus LX wagon. It's so frustrating. When I look up 1986-1991 Taurus and Sables all I find are the 89-91 SHOs. I had the chance to get a pristine white 86 LX wagon with the rare instaclear windshield option 3 years ago but my dad is a fool and got in the way.
I've been looking for one myself for years there very hard to come by. At least ones that are in good shape everything that I have found is ready to go to the junkyard
I have to say that as I gotten older, it's no wonder that a lot of tv and low budget scifi movies back in the 1990s used the Ford Taurus as a placement for futuristic cars. I mean, they had that scifi feel to them. Like you said, it's no wonder it was used in Robocop as well due to it looking like something out of the future or outer space. I will say that I thought that the back of the Ford Taurus Station Wagon was scary looking when I was a kid. Still, I admire the vehicle.
Bob I owned a 1998 wagon in white with blue interior I loved that car my kids loved the 3rd rear facing seat these came with optional picnic table. Mine had rear caliber issues if you use the parking brake they would lock up get so hot it would melt the plastic hubcaps off.
pretty sure what killed the taurus was the head gasket issues my aunt had a able and it blew a head gasket then the damn monkey shop screwed up so it overheadted again and cracked the block. it was so nice leather digital everything heated seats even a car phone. i loved the light bar lack of grill.
And it's a possibility but with my dad's it was the transmission that went out. But I have heard of other Taurus owners who complain about the head gasket.
My aunt had a ‘92 LX sedan in that same exact purple. The only thing is that it came with gray body cladding and it also had leather interior. My grandmother also had a ‘94 GL sedan in electric red with gray cloth interior. The only additional option I think hers had was the chirping keyless entry. A pretty cool feature in the 90’s. I’ve never seen a wagon in that color though. Fascinating!!
This is what we should be doing when talking about saving the planet. Forget buying your brand new electric car. Buy a decent, used car, and just drive it until it dies. Now that Bob owns that Taurus, it will probably run for another 10 years. Give it the basic maintenance it needs, and just enjoy it. Much greener than scrapping it and buying a brand new car.
Station wagons are awesome they came in common for a family small vacations or a grocery getter I will never disrespect a wagon The taurus vehicles are great for kids first drivers I mean cause why buy a brand new car that is all plastic when taurus cars were safe and length
My grandpa had a midnight blue 1988 Mercury Sable GL with the 3.0 V6. I loved it! I prefer station wagons over SUVs any day. Maybe this video will inspire the car makers and people to want to bring back station wagons. 😉
Had a burgundy 93 wagon, looks like the wagon in the video. Replaced our 87 celebrity 2.5 wagon. I was 7 back in 2003, the Taurus wagon was quieter and smoother than our celebrity wagon. I thought all cars souded loud. Lol still miss the celebrity. But will always miss the 93 wagon. . .
94s had body colored door handles and the newer rounded steering wheel so I'm guessing this one is an early one. I was just thinking the other day that you never see them anymore. We had a 94 sedan with the 3.8. When it rusted out we replaced it with a 2005 which was one of the best cars we ever had. It was nice seeing this video about them :) Our 94 had the center console instead of the column shifter.
Greetings from England. American cars are not generally released onto the European market unfortunately. But I familiarized myself with American cars by seeing them on American tv shows and movies. It was not uncommon to see a Ford Taurus on an episode of The X Files back in the day. That 2nd generation Ford Taurus is definitely the nicest looking. I don't care what the naysayers say about Ford, they have made a lot of nice cars. I know they do generally have more rust issues than other brands of cars, but they make up for it in other areas. Ford has been in business since 1903, they must be doing something right. It is a shame station wagons are not as popular as they once were. They have more than enough storage space than most people need. Sometimes they have more storage space than some SUVs. I have a 2000 Ford Focus Station wagon with 168'000 miles on it. I've owned it since 2015. The car has had some repairs, but nothing major. I'm proud of it. If I lived in America or Canada, I'd likely buy a Ford Taurus Station Wagon.
Nice! I love that eggplant colored Taurus GL wagon. I kind of like base model vehicles, especially wagons. I'd keep it stock, like you said, we used to see these on the road all of the time, but now, they've practically disappeared.
Why does everyone think 'ashtrays' are for smokers only? I'm sure we weren't the only family who put some trash like sweets packaging etc. in there? We used them for small trash items while on tour...
I drive a 2000 Taurus Wagon DOHC and love it. I am the second owner and people stare at me when I show them the third row seat. (They apparently have never driven a wagon or seen one. ( I also had a 1993 Taurus Wagon Brand New and loved it. ) The Taurus when it first came out saved Ford Motor Company from Bankruptcy. There is a SHO wagon. It was a Ford Executive that had it made. I am not talking about the home made versions. But it was one of one.
My mom had a 92 brown one, I remember she got rear ended in a school parking lot, after the accident she opened the glass to get us in and out of the car lol
I love my 95 Taurus SE. It's one of the more rare trim levels for the second gen being a one year only option. They were pretty much just GL's with SHO interiors and spoilers.
If you want to keep that factory tape deck but make full use of your phone, check out wireless bluetooth tape adapters. It's a cassette that you put in, that gives you full Bluetooth like a modern car without tearing up the dash. You do have to remove it about once a month to recharge it. They're like $25 and absolutely wonderful in these scenarios. I use an aluratek in my classic cars.
Bob, great radio voice. No uhhs, no duhs, just say what you're thinking in a clear, concise way. Nice nostalgic trip, you painted, too! I bought a '92, a '93, and a '95. They weren't wagons, but, I actually liked the way the wagon looked over the sedan. I loved how the dash wrapped around and the redundant radio controls you pointed out in your video. I still consider the wagon the best looking wagon ever mass produced. Since I was about 21, I couldn't see myself riding the ladies in a wagon, lol. But it looked so sleek with it's clean lines, back in the day. I liked the Taurus lineup thru the years, so much, I also bought a 2004, 2012, '14, '16, and a 2018, which I drive today, and it's a keeper. I wished I had the foresight to hang unto one of those 90s model, cause they were little trouble and never any trans issues. Anyway, I'm ramblin, thanx for posting!
I had a 1995 wagon in Royal Blue with blue interior. I loved that wagon. You could push it off a cliff on fire and it would still go afterwards. And don't be fooled she had some get up and go too. I'd love to have another one as a errand car!
And I just remembered that the visor on the passenger side said AIRBAG - SEE OTHER SIDE . And mine had the cover ripped off the vanity mirror so when my ex read it for the first time, and then flipped it over and only saw her own reflection, I can't begin to tell you how perfect a moment that was.
I sure enjoyed this vlog Bob! Had a 2017 SHO sold it for my jeep SRT ....I loved the simplicity of the Taurus for fixing! As you said the parts are easy to get and so true! But to find a Taurus wagon in that condition unbelievable! I have only seen a couple of them here in poor condition! So true Bob where did they go? ...A excellent view much appreciated! Cheers 🤝✌
Hey video Bob did you ever experience any problems with the killers switch on the backside passenger trunk? Every time I went over a bump or railroad tracks it shut the gas line off.
Hey-a Bob. Upgrading the stereo is totally up to you. However what with weirdos wandering across your driveway...the idea of a B and E to grab expensive electronics would bother me. Who looks in a 30 year old car anyway? Thats just it. Somebody might because it's not an everyday car people are familiar with. Next time you are at Wal-Mart stop in the electronics dept and pick up a $30 Bluetooth transmitter. They plug into the cigarette lighter and you can connect to the radio without spending gobs of money changing the radio out. The good part is you keep all originality of the vehicle just in case it does go up in value. The cool part is the transmitter is also a hands free device for your phone. And it connects on start up. Seeing as how it is just a utility vehicle that you require so little from this to me is the perfect tool. I used one in a car with similar aesthetics. Plain radio with CD but no additional tech. I streamed podcasts and music. Spoke on the phone....it was great. Now my cars have all the tech so really...I dont need it anymore unless I get an older car for myself. Anyway...Its just a Thought. Y'all have a good day.
Those are safe cars too. 1992-1995 & the new 1996 models were the only big midsized cars that could pass the new 1997 federal side impact crash test and frontal offset crash test. The frontal offset crash test was the toughest to pass and the 1992 Taurus/Sable were the only ones in the early 90s that could pass it with a GOOD rating.
I have a 1987 Taurus LX it's in great shape with only 48k on it. My parents won it brand new in 87 and I've since inherited it. Love the car and the history behind it.
I know of 2 of these - 1 with 2.4L manual and other 3.0 V6 wich ended up in Eastern Europe Estonia rural countryside - where they served their owners until 1st rusted out and second transmission blew :D Comfy daily cruisers -cheers!
love these cars but living here in the UK we never had them, I was in Canada in 90's and remember visiting the local ford dealership and was in awe of the styling of these, I still have the original dealer brochure. I do have a mint 70,000 mile ford escort ZX2 the only one in the UK which have very similar styling cues the the taurus and has the same color interior as yours.
That generation body Taurus WAS safe. My cousin was not injured in a wreck that rolled the car 6 or 7 times and someone else l know was hit t bone by a car going over 50 mph on a highway and was also not injured. By the looks of both wrecks you'd assume someone was killed.
Alot those cars ended down under revamped and became very popular with the funeral industries. Plenty of space and potential . Had to laugh at the cigarette ash trays, but I have to agree with you they look like a spaceship painted in a silver color, blue thin pin stripe , and blue interior very nice car . Thanks for the video Bob.👍
I had a country squire white with the fake wood grain wrap . Had retreads on it lost all the tread on the tire on the pa turn pike lost that baby I miss that car
