My favourite system I ever owned was a Punch 60 and Punch 40 combo in my 1983 Mustang GT. The 60 ran my Macrom mids and highs and a bridged center channel with a potentimeter to adjust the level. The 40 ran 4 Punch 8" subs at 4 ohms. It was such a well balanced sound system. It scored a 34 on the RTA with no extra equalization.

Badass, I'd like to have heard that. I actually run beryllium mids and tweets out of a set of yamaha ns1000s. The mid alone weighs over 10lbs I think.

back then, you just couldn't go wrong with rockford. They were always a little pricy, but they always delivered tons of clean, reliable power at well over their rated specs. not surprised they still have a massive cult following after all these years. I still have a few myself, all in working condition, and still buy them when I come across a good deal.

I had my very first RF amp self destruct a year ago - I'm thinking my jl audio sub got hot, shorted, and that destroyed the amp. Oh well chit happens. I'm still a big fan and now I have a larger 1000 watt RF mono amp ready to install. Have had tons of different RF amps over the years...

These Rockford's were absolute animals. We sold so many of them at Classic Stereo & Video. The Rockford head units were some of the very best CD players that ever hit cars, too.

my first system was a Punch 15" sub with a Punch 40IX DSM bridged in a sealed box with an external low pass crossover, sony mids and highs and a clarion head unit... in a 1985 Honda CRX SI in 1997. I loved that setup. Thanks for the nostalgic stroll down RF memory lane!
@MuvoTX
@MuvoTX 7 месяцев назад
Yep those old CRX installs were always impressive. They were so small, you really didn't need a lot of power or speakers to fill them up. I had a 85' accord 2 DR hatch and my friend had an 88 accord 2 DR sedan. He had a rockford Peanut powering some MB quart separates in a SQ install. dang those were the days!!

@@MuvoTXHad a 91 CRX with Alpine coax in door, Alpine head unit, and a RF peanut. Sub was simple with a JBL GTO804 and Alpine monoblock for ~300Watts. Not for SQ at all, just something for decent sound. A hole with one leg in a rusty black GMC 2500 and mower trailer ran over the hood with me in it while rounding a corner. Dammit.

You probably know or remember that I absolutely love the DSM series! It's hard to be the power series that came out after this in the gray chassis. The 50x² and 50m, since they're not needed in cheater mode, have so much reserve power that their sound quality is absolutely amazing! As always, thanks for doing these!

@IzziedeD
@IzziedeD 7 месяцев назад
well the input level/gains are independent, so you can scope em or meter them and dial them in perfectly. whereas, today's gear is mostly using stereo gain pots, so the deviation from the left channel to right is essentially the deviation between the two halves of the pot. unfortunately, with stereo pots, balance is not something yhat can be adjusted, and they would need much more expensive pots to get them closer to identical.

Love it. My first new amp was a 40DSM in 1993 or 4. Kinda surprised this 60 didn't like 2 ohm mono. Ran my 40 at 2 ohm mono for many years. Got hot but never quit. 💪 Only thing that eventually took mine out of service was the remote turn on terminal solder joint broke off of the board.
@wal2
@wal2 7 месяцев назад
The 2 ohms on the Dyno is a resistive load and speakers will produce a reactive load so it’s understandable but I will say the 40 and 200 DSM models I tested before had no problem at 2 ohms mono 🤷‍♂️

Back in 1991, I had this amp called the Hott Setup 2.125. It was not exactly cheap. And some people even said it was made by Orion. But it never really impressed. Despite being rated at 125Wx2, it just didn’t seem to hit very hard. Eventually, I replaced it with a Punch 60 DSM when it came out. And OMG, what a difference it made. Despite being rated at less than a quarter the output, it flat-out blew that Hott Setup out of the water!

In the Honda Civic, the 60 ran 7" Focal mids and tweets in front doors and the 40 ran 2 Cerwin Vega 8ohm 10" woofers bridged. The sytem was 2ohm all the way around, but because of the rules at the time (everything rated at 4 ohms), he was making some serious power. Great amp and great video 👍👍 These amps aren’t rated 1 Ohm per channel or 2 Ohms mono, but the powercube ratings which were made with 1kHz burst signal 20ms are all printed at the bottom of the original box. These results are also in every manual and features the punch 200 which is a great amplifier 😊 funny fact from 1995: the German sellers here in Hamburg suggested to get the 40,60,100 or 200 for 2 Ohms mono operation 😅😂 that’s why I came in touch with a punch 40ix. At this time I didn’t even know or heard something about Rockford Fosgate because only special shops were allowed to sell them, from this year my first Punch 40ix ( 600 German marks ) was forced to power a 2 Ohms subwoofer for 5 years without a problem 👍

I ran alphasonik back in the day and for the money you got a lot of value I had 2 2x50 for mids and tweeters and 2x150 on two Dr crankenstien 12's sounded great

We always suspected the were pushing more than what they said, we used to love the 75 and 150's, those were the sweet spots

While well made some of this legacy stuff is, it really is impressive how much more efficient anything basically made after 2000 has become.

I had two Rockford Fosgate Power 300 Mosfets with the shroud fans. I always wanted that Power 1000 or that big McIntosh massive one. No need for all that these days.

Love RF. I still use RF AMPs today. I wonder if anyone has used the case to put a modern-day RF AMP into. Love the look of those AMPs!!!

The modern stuff won't fit, but the black and grind series from the late 90s and early 2000s do fit. There really isn't much point in trying to put something newer in an older heat sink, though.

I have an old school 4 channel RF. I loved the punch series when I was in my teens. Never could afford new though. I had an old school 150 on 2 lanzar 10's. That pounded for sure. Id cringe if i saw all the black tape and half-assed butt connectors now😂

Damn 30 yrs. I remember seeing these in magazines thinking they looked so cool. Always wanted to own some of those. Only ever owned the 99-2002 Punch amps.

There was this one killer install I'll never forget which was a fox body mustang where the owner cut out the floor boards and had these amps liquid cooled under glass in the foot wells. That was right when these DSM amps came out. Would love to see that CAE article again.

Awesome work! You are champion in your field, truly. Have you ever tested/tried the MB Quartz Discuss amps? I got a pair of them, 50x4 & 125x4 amps, and heard/read a lot of good things about them. These are old amps I got from crutchfield many years ago, but they seem to do a good job running my sub and miss. If you have any interest to use them, let me know. Thanks again & cheers!

Around 1995 or so I had bridged punch 60 at 1.66 ohms (three 10's), took it fine due to box rise, and it slammed hard. Eventually got stolen. Miss that amp.
