In this video I show you how to repair a leaking ABS modulator on 1994-1997 Accords.
If the fluid level in your ABS reservoir keeps falling after you top it off and you notice a puddle of brake fluid under the modulator. The most likely culprit is the accumulator o-ring. But it's a good idea to replace the pump o-ring too while you're at it.

Excellent video. Thoroughly informative and professionally done. The only tip I would add is to be very careful with brake fluid. It is highly corrosive and will almost instantly damage painted surfaces and should be washed off when you're finished to prevent accelerated rust or stains. Thanks for the video!

Just replaced these o-rings on my 94 Integra (same ABS unit seen here), by leaving it connected and lifting it up with a wood support. It's a major PITA doing it that way, that's for sure. I'm still not sure if I got the pump motor o-ring seated correctly or not, or if it's leaking past the pump motor. When I removed the old o-ring fluid started pouring out. It was really hard to get the new one in there.

Is it likly that honda/acura used the same abs modulator and pump on 1994 to 1997. I am wondering if the two o-rings numbers would work. I called acura today and they said they have no number of the o-rings, that I would have to buy the complete units. Too expensive for my blood.

Excellent How To Video Bushougoma! I used it to replace nearly identical modulator for 1995-1997 Odyssey. I imagine would also work for Integra of this vintage. While the recycled modulator does not leak fluid I am getting the 18 code now. Recycler is getting me another one but I have a question you might be able to answer for me. If the accumulator is bad why can I still bleed the modulator with pump off? The fluid easily fills over a foot of tubing on an eighth of a turn of bleeder valve and into a container with 1/4 turn.

Hi! Thumbs up to your informative video! I have the same issue. I just want to hit the right problem though. So when I start up my Honda Accord Ex a weird sound from the accumulator. It take maybe 20sec. Then once the ABS lights comes on the dash panel the noise stop! So which one should I do first? Bleed or change O-ring right away? Appreciate any input.

Bushougoma, I have a 1997 Acura CL 3.0. It looks like the same ABS pump assembly. The problem I am having is the abs light stays on. I attempted to add fluid and purge it of air like you explained in your other modulator bleed video. Once I got clear fluid I closed everything up and when I went to start the car, the abs light remained on but the pump ran continuously. I remember before I had any problems with the abs system the way it is suppose to opperate is the light comes on and abs motor comes on momentary and then both shut off. In order for me to stop the pump from running all the time, I removed the ABS relay(next to the yellow wire with red stripe) from the housing. That stopped the annoying pump from running, the abs light is still on. I have driven the car and I have brakes but I imagine not abs brakes. What might be causing the ABS pump to run and not shut off? I have not attempted this o-ring replacement as shown in this video of yours. Might bad O-rings as you replace in this video cause the pump to run all the time problem I am experiencing?

I didn’t watch this video before taking off the accumulator. I loosened the bleeder valve to release pressure, but all that came out was fluid. Then, when I took the 2 bolts off the bottom pressure came out that way. Did I do something wrong? Is this accumulator a paper weight now?

Hello, great video. My Honda was parked for about 6 months and just noticed a puddle of brake fluid under the ABS module. Wasn't sure what it was at first but when I started it sure enough the ABS light came on (which led me to your video). I've ordered the o-rings from Honda but wondering what order I should do to fix it? Can I open the accumulator and ad brake fluid without depressurizing the modulator so I can move the car to my garage to repair it? Also, once I replace the o-rings and bleed the system will the ABS light go off once I start it again? Thanks for the help.
@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 9 лет назад
KELLEY ELDER You don't add brake fluid to the accumulator you add it to the reservoir under the rubber and plastic cap. The reservoir is not pressurized. If the ABS light is on the modulator pump motor won't run. To clear the codes disconnect the negative battery terminal for 30 seconds or pull the 20 amp and 15 amp fuses out of the ABS fuse box for 30 seconds.

I am getting an ABS code 1-8. I see evidence of fluid leak around the accumulator. Is it possible that low or no brake fluid in the reservoir can cause this code?
@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 8 лет назад
+Gen Shin A 1-8 means the accumulator is being pressurized with brake fluid by the pump and the pressure isn't holding. Replace the accumulator o-ring, refill, and bleed the system. You also will have to go to the ABS fuse box and pull the ABS computer fuse to clear the stored code. If the code doesn't return that's all the issue was. If it returns either the accumulator is bad (the nitrogen gas pressure inside has decayed) or one of the valves in the modulator is leaking and not holding built up accumulator pressure. In either case a replacement used modulator is the best option. Low fluid or air in the fluid would cause a pump overrun code can't remember the code for that at the moment.

I'm trying to cure a leak from my modulator but the OEM 'o' rings are no longer available so it's trial and error with other rings of similar size - so far with no perfect result. I have even scoured England for a second hand modulator with no luck. Breakers' yards and ebay have all failed me.Does anyone have knowledge of the exact specifications of the 2 rings, especially the accumulator ring? That is, is it Nitrile? What hardness (70, 75, 90)? What dimensions are they (inner dimension plus ring thickness)?All and any suggestions gratefully received.

+Marinero69 If you have an ABS code (ABS light on) disconnect the battery for a few seconds or pull the fuse in the ABS fuse box to clear the memory. Yes bleed the modulator afterward. Start the engine, you will hear the pump run and turn off, shut off the engine, attach some clear tubing to the bleeder, run it into a bottle, and open the bleeder. Close the bleeder top off the reservoir and repeat until the fluid comes out clear without any bubbles.

@Bushougoma

Miguel Sanchez If it happens every once in awhile after the engine is started that's the ABS computer testing the modulator and the accumulator it does this periodically. It's also normal for the pump to run after the ABS has engaged.

Miguel Sanchez If the fluid level in the ABS reservoir is fine and you've bled the ABS modulator the accumulator is probably shot. If you pull the code from the ABS computer and it's a 1-8 that also confirms it.

@@Bushougoma, correct, I did bench bleed the master cylinder. Did everything like ur suppose to do and stumped that I'm still not getting pressure to the brake lines or pedal. The only thing I can think of is either the push rod needs adjustment or the abs module/accumulator has an air leak. I'm almost to the point of rerouting the brake lines to the master cylinder instead of thru the abs system, trying to figure it out bc its are daily driver an been down for almost 2 wks
@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 3 года назад
I'd crack the lines on the modulator one at a time while someone presses the brake pedal. There are 6 two come from the primary and secondary pistons of the master cylinder and 4 go to the wheels. You should see fluid come out on each. Make sure that they hold the pedal down UNTIL you tighten the line to prevent air from getting in. First the 2 lines from the master cylinder to the modulator and then the 4 lines from the modulator to the wheels. If fluid isn't getting into the modulator either the master cylinder is bad or is air locked. I'd try bench bleeding it again. If brake fluid is getting into the modulator but not getting out to any of the 4 wheel lines that is your issue. You can certainly delete the ABS but you need to get a proportioning valve from a non ABS model (it's inside the modulator on ABS models). The bolt holes for mounting it should be on the firewall just below and to the left of the master cylinder.

Was the problem an external leak? Not sure i understood what the problem was. Also on this abs system i have seen upon start up where the abs pump will keep running for a few minutes, whats up with that?
@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 9 лет назад
The pump motor bearings were bad and the accumulator lost almost all of its gas charge. The pump will run every now and then after start up that's normal it's part of a self test. But if it runs on every startup chances are the accumulator is bad or a valve in the modulator is leaking and not holding pressure. If the pump runs excessively on start up it's because the brake fluid isn't reaching the proper pressure and tripping the pressure switch. The two most common causes are that the reservoir is empty due to a leak or there's air in the modulator. If the pump runs too long the ABS computer will turn the pump off, store a DTC 1 (pump over run), and turn on the ABS light.

@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 6 лет назад
No the top bolt is to vent the high pressure nitrogen gas inside before disposing of the old accumulator. The bolts holding the accumulator to the modulator assembly are on the bottom. Be sure to crack the modulator bleeder valve to vent any built up brake fluid pressure before removing the accumulator. I have already done a video on accumulator replacement.
@striker806
@striker806 6 лет назад
so i got a new accumulator can i just pull it up and not disconnect the brake lines like have it on a plank or wood and then undo the 2 bolts and swap them and does that mean i dont have to bleed the brakes
@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 6 лет назад
There is no reason to remove the brake lines from the modulator they have enough flex so you can get to the two lower bolts a plank of wood works fine. Just make sure you depressurize the ABS modulator first put a length of clear vinyl tubing on the ABS bleeder and direct it into a container. Then crack the bleeder this will prevent a sudden pressure release of brake fluid when you remove the accumulator. Yes you don't have to bleed the brakes. Brake fluid in the master cylinder and the brake fluid in the ABS reservoir are isolated. However after accumulator replacement you do have to bleed the ABS modulator via it's bleeder. Put a length of clear vinyl tubing on the ABS bleeder and direct it into a container make sure the bleeder is closed. After filling the modulator reservoir to the full mark start the engine up. You will hear the pump run and it will turn off after it has pressurized the accumulator. Shut the engine off and crack the bleeder. The stream of brake fluid will have bubbles in it close the bleeder, refill the reservoir to the full mark, and repeat the process until the stream of fluid coming out has no bubbles. You will have to refill the reservoir after each bleed since it doesn't hold that much brake fluid.

Should I just replace those seals and the motor? Thanks!
@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 9 лет назад
Austin Boczar A 1-2 is a pump motor circuit code. There are many things that can set this code it can be anything from a blown ABS fuse, a bad pump relay, a bad pump, or an open or shorted wire. I recommend you get the service manual it has a detailed flow chart for the 1-2 code it will explain the checks in more detail then I can here. Since the ABS unit has been run dry repeatedly I'd say the pump motor is toast from fluid starvation. But I'd still check the pump motor circuit to confirm. Used modulators are pretty inexpensive just replace the o-rings before installing it to prevent a failure in the future.

baliabe Put a coolant pressure tester on the radiator cap and pressurize the system coolant will come out where the leak is. Some auto parts stores will loan this tool out for a refundable deposit. The coolant bypass pipe is made of metal and can rust through. A visual inspection should confirm its condition poke any rusty areas with a screwdriver to check for soft spots. If the pipe is in good shape and it's leaking between the pipe and the water pump check the o-ring. There are also some coolant return hoses that connect to the pipe check those too. If the coolant is leaking from the weep hole then the shaft seal on the pump is gone. The water pump is under the timing cover and driven by the timing belt which usually means you're also looking at a timing belt replacement. The water pump should always be replaced when the timing belt is scheduled to be replaced for this reason.
@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 9 лет назад
baliabe If that's where the coolant is leaking from. You could have multiple leaks and the dealer only found one. If this vehicle still has the original radiator I wouldn't be surprised if it was leaking considering it's age.

94-97 Integra's have the same brake bleeding sequence: rear right, front left, rear left, front right.
@Bushougoma
@Bushougoma 6 лет назад
Most manufacturers go with the furthest wheel from the master cylinder first then the closest on that circuit. The brake system is redundant with two separate pistons in the master cylinder serving two wheels. So in the event of a brake line failure you still have two wheels to brake with. Some vehicles have the circuits split diagonally and others horizontally. You can often tell by the manufacturers bleed order if they have you going from a front wheel to a back wheel it's a diagonally split system. If it's side to side it's a horizontally split system.

@@Bushougoma For many years I have done the bleed sequence: 1. Pass-Rear 2. Driver- Rear 3. Pass-Front 4. Driver-Front. You have shown a different sequence, but I guess they both work. Great job on the video, very intuitive, great lighting, and great sound. I wish we had youtube way back when they first started this ABS business. I would have been fixing like hotcakes! +zabramesh Try spraying them with penetrating oil first and let them sit for awhile. You have to use a flare wrench a standard wrench will just round the nuts off. If all else fails cut the line as close to the flare nut as possible and put a socket on it to remove it. You'll need a double flare tool to re flare the line. You can reuse the old flare nuts if the heads aren't rounded or damaged from removal or you can purchase new ones at the auto parts store.

If you can't get the air out check the accumulator and pump o-rings they can allow air to enter if they're leaking brake fluid if they're fine a replacement modulator is the only option. I have the same problem, with the same symptoms as you in my Honda RA1 Odyssey, tried changing O rings and bleeding system brakes and ABS. The situation improved but ABS light still randomly comes on and diagnostics still shows with 1-8 code. My guess is it is the accumulator but not sure how to test this. Pump seams to run fine. Hoping I can find a Accumulator a bit cheaper than the $428 US that's on e bay. Rude of Honda to charge so much for a small simple part given they crap out early with normal use stopping your vehicle passing safety inspections. My Nissan has done 430,000 ks and still doesn't miss a beat, I think I will stick to a Nissan next time.
