Graf never looked more elegant . The perfect expression of athleticism and grace. And I love how she ended the championship with a topspin backhand winner.

Two sets, of almost complete perfection by Steffi. Certainly one of the most dominant displays in her career especially considering, this was the final... What a match point finish!

This was the match that I first saw Steffi play when I was a kid, and I've been a fan since! I wish I had seen her play back in the late 80s, but I was too young to care about tennis. But damn, this brings back memories! I remember I didn't understand the game, more so I was sooo confused of the scoring system. I became such a big fan of Steffi after this. A year after, I had already got posters of her and some of the other players that I like, but more on Steffi of course! I picked up a racket and also learned the sport. I had broken so many things coz I played with the racket and tennis ball whilst inside the house. I realized how fun and hard it was at the same time when I finally played in an actual tennis court. One of my nicknames that I go by, I had gotten because of Steffi. This is such a treat. Thank you for uploading this video. This made my day!

bandhu sarkar Because, for you, Arantxa Sanchez was no opposition ? she wasn't worth playing the final ? Her tennis had no value at all ? At least, Arantxa had the guts to play tennis, while Seles milked her (very light) wound to take a two years vacation, as she was temporarily through with the Tour in 1993. She could have played back as soon as the 93 Wimbledon Tournament. However, she preferred enjoying a long rest in the nice station of Vail, Colorado. How should Arantxa be responsible for it ??

Their rivalry went one of two ways usually - either Steffi destroyed Arantxa cause everything was working that day or Arantxa drove her nuts with her insane retrieval skills and Graf began pressing too much and would make more errors. Steffi always preferred to keep the points short and sweet and that forehand usually did just that and sometimes she would get frustrated and impatient cause that wasn't happening. Keep in mind that Arantxa has similar wins over Graf, the most well known one being the 6-0, 6-2 win at Roland Garros in the semis. Arantxa was no pushover but in their matches it was usually up to Steffi how it was going to play out.
@l__1680
@l__1680 5 лет назад
@GeorgeHenryThomas As I said Arantxa was no pushover but it since Graf was the more powerful, aggressive player every match they played was dependent on how Steffi played. Arantxa was a fighter though and wouldn't ever give up or choke.

The 1994 Australian Open is the first grand slam that Steffi changed from the Dunlop 85 to a Wilson 95. She was growing in confidence using her new racquet in this GS and in the final, her forehand was just glorious especially those powerful shots at 21:58, 31:17, 54:49, and 59:38. It really tells us how transformative racquet and string innovations were and still is. Imagine Steffi playing with current technology and training. She would have been incredibly formidable in this era and I believe her backhand would have evolved differently to include more of a driving topspin backhand to complement her vicious backhand slice. Her forehand, which is still the greatest, would have transcended to even greater heights instilling fear to all her competitors! There was a quote I heard from a commentator who said “If Steffi had a backhand like her forehand, she would be unstoppable”!!!
@ytangel7263
@ytangel7263 3 года назад
O 285 Yes Steffi did grow in confidence definitely in part due to Seles absence, her success in 1993 though I don’t want to minimize her opponents she had face to win titles, and eventually her move to a larger Wilson 95 racquet. It really upsets me that we lost a rivalry that could have been similar to Roger vs Rafa or Martina vs Chris.

Ilya Kuryakin Yes I regret responding if I knew the other comments he/she posted in other videos. Steffi looks very slim here. I remember reading at the time how much she had trained in the off season between 1993 and 1994. I think it probably backfired for her though - she had a tendency to overtrain and overplay and it really affected her later in 1994. I suspect that if she had her time again, she'd take much more care of her body.

1994 was a real lost year for Steffi. She won no more GS tournaments that year. She was winning the US Open final against Arantxa when her back went out and lost the momentum and the lead and made a heroic attempt at the end but fell short. Had she performed up to standard, she would probably hold the GS record.

Right before the Australian Open Steffi played an exhibition match against Sanchez Vicario and she mentioned that she had lost a lost a lot of weight during the 1993 off-season. Arantxa was such a strong fighter. She was a good athlete but lacked the weapons to really challenge the top players when they were playing well. She had some very limited success against the top players of the 90’s - Graf, Seles, Hingis, etc - but they had way more against her. Vs Graf 8-28 Vs Seles 3-19 Vs Hingis 2-18 Poor Arantxa, fighter that she was, had just 13 total wins vs 65 losses against those 3 alone.

My thing about the commentary people is that they can talk ish while sitting and watching a match. These players are HUMAN. They are not machines eventhough steffi played like one from time to time. Most players have their familes in the stand to draw strenght from them. So who care how many times they look up even if it's after every point. I mean the commentators are NOT the ones who fought their way to the final. Who the hell are they to throw shade at a player. Even today in 2018 they are still talking ish about a player when nine times out of ten they are sitting in a chair with a pot belly. SMDH

One couldn't just watch one match and then criticize players (e.g. Sanchez not up to the challenge, Steffi should've handed her wins over to Seles). Sanchez definitely underperformed here but in almost every match she pushed Graf to the limits and their rivalry is some of the best. About this year, at least be grateful that it was because of the Graf-Sanchez rivalry that prevents this year from being a bad year (like late-1993 when nobody, even Steffi, was good). Both proved their values by winning slams after 1995 as well.

@mcoomb8908
@mcoomb8908 7 лет назад
So you're saying that because Seles couldn't grunt she lost 6-1 6-2 to Graf? You fail to mention that Seles never beat Graf on grass and their other meeting at Wimbledon was also embarrassing for Seles. So Seles walked onto centre court at Wimbledon, she's in the final, this situation is the ultimate for any tennis player, and she allows herself to turn up and play far below what is she is capable of because she can't scream/grunt every time she hits the ball? If this is the truth then we should question Seles's professionalism, and the word crybaby comes to mind. Any tennis player who finds themselves in the final of Wimbledon would and should give it absolutely everything, 100%, why wouldn't they? She wasn't told to not make a noise at all, she was told to keep it down because other players complained (loud grunting wasn't as common back then). On certain points the noise out of her was ridiculous. By the way in the 92 Wimbledon final there are at least three exceptional points/winning shots by Graf, these points had nothing to do with Seles, she was simply a spectator, a 'peak' or non-crybaby Seles would make no difference, Graf was on fire in that final and these points just reflected the standard of her play that day. Graf obviously realised where she was and decided to give it absolutely everything, just a shame Seles didn't huh?

This is about as good as Steffi can play and everything was working for her in this match. BUT, Arancha got revenge against Steffi in the U.S. Open final later that year. And the rest of Graf's grand slam season was a total washout with stunning straight set losses to Mary Pierce at the French and a jaw-dropping first round loss to Lori McNeil at Wimbledon. Sanchez Vicario sealed her #1 ranking for the year with a French Open win that year. To see Graf getting pummeled by another hard-hitter, check out Pierce's demolition of her in the French Open semis.
@fong03
@fong03 3 года назад
Steffi was hobbled in that US Open final. A win is a win, but we should not pretend Arantxa beat a healthy Graf in that final. She was dominating Arantxa until her back started to seize up. Graf was hurt most of that season actually. As for Pierce, Mary could always beat anyone when she played her absolute best. Steffi also played a terrible match. Order was restored the next time they played.
@grantgoffin4774
@grantgoffin4774 3 года назад
@@fong03 Sanchez really got lucky that year all around. The French Open final she also got lucky in the rain delay clearly broke Pierce's overall event momentum. The way Pierce was playing that event, only losing 16 games on the way to the final, it would be hard to see Sanchez beating her, even as well as she was playing as well. And also the final itself had Pierce leading 3-1 and Sanchez looking nervous and missing forehands before the rain delay. It was clear to see where the match was going. Pierce would have won for sure, maybe not 6-2, 6-2 as she did vs Graf, but she was going to win for sure without the rain delay. Then the U.S Open final with Graf's mid match injury.

At the Grand Slams, yes, but not overall. Steffi defeated Arantxa a few times in 94 at regular tournaments. However, 1994 was the year that many found out and adapted to Steffi's game (a normal thing top players face), but it was clear that after this Australian Open, Arantxa had Steffi's number at 1994 grand slams. Also, of course we must stick to on-court situations but it's difficult not to mention Steffi's growing injuries by 94, as well as her worsening personal troubles regarding her father. These factors would have to affect even a tough champion such as Steffi Graf.
@scampsweep
@scampsweep 4 года назад
Alex SDB “Arantxa had Steffi’s number at the 1994 Grand Slams?” After this match, they only played once at the Grand Slams in 1994 - that was in the final of the US Open during which Graf had chronic back pain. Arantxa just about won 6:4 in the third set. I don’t think one victory constitutes having Graf’s number at all. I think they met 6 times overall in 1994 and they both won 3 of the encounters each (despite the fact that Graf had at least one match point in 2 of the encounters she lost!) Yes, it was Sanchez’s most successful year against Graf, but this was, arguably, due to Graf’s back injury (affecting her performances in both Montreal and New York) rather than Sánchez having worked out a strategy for success. After all, Sanchez never beat Graf again after the 1994 US Open. They met four times overall in 1995 and 1996 (all in Grand Slam finals) and Graf won all of them. It was an interesting rivalry to watch though.
