The 1990s were so awesome. Amazing films, amazing music, amazong motorsports, an era of passion compared to today's sterile, pressure group-controlled world.
Great memories as a kid sitting at the dinner table watching the racing on BBC Grandstand.

Me too. I don't know why now, but i thought those yellow and blue Meganes were the coolest thing ever. And I seem to remember the Volvos always doing well when it was wet :)
This was the golden era, BTCC has never and will never be this good again, the mix or manufactures and drivers was awesome, I remember going to some of the races
Best racing class ever! And I probably also think 1994 was best year is in terms of the cars' appearance. Partly because if you wanted to compete with spoilers and wings, you had to build 2,500 such homologation cars as well. I'm surprised that the commentator only talks about reduced weight on the BMW at 25:40 and 28:24 when everyone can see that Alfa (and Audi in german series STW) from now on were not alone with a wing package. Something that immediately got up BMW's speed on the tracks - and the nice 318is / 4 Class II in the colours red, yellow, blue and black out on the streets! Which no one remembers, I guess? But I looked for one in Germany and took it home to Sweden 2007. Not so quick with only 140 hp but with very good balance in corners and fun to drive I remember. Already 1995, the FIA decided that everyone was allowed to have (within certain given dimensions) a front and rear spoiler on the race car without any connection to the street cars.
These WERE THE TIMES MAN!! So Many Makes Alfa Romeo, Peugeot, Vauxhall,BMW, Renault, SEAT, Toyota, Nissan, Volvo, MG, Ford..Wow what a time for racing!! Today is just not the same. All down to 2 to 3 makes. Everytime Alfa Romeo went in and kicked Ass the rules were always changed against them. DTM same thing happened.
Great upload. I remember watching this back in the day. Essentially this was a watered down version of the Official VHS Review, so cut from 3 hours to 1, but with the Touring Car World Cup highlights thrown in. A lot of people said that this was the last year of the BTCC, before the wings and spoilers came in and things went crazy... well apart from Alfa who started it all🙂
I still rinse this on dvd btcc boxset from Duke. Can't get enough. Great to see it on RU-vid. My lunch break is sorted for 2moro. 1991 to 2000 btcc is heaven on earth. my favourite seasons are 98 and 99 with thee inclusion of mandatory pit stops and snetterton night race 99. Absolute gold. 🍻
@@paulpearson3744 I may have to invest in one of the boxsets-the 94-99 one looks good value🙂98 and 99 were cool as you say and I've got a soft spot for 2000 too, even though there were only three main manufacturers by then.
@@davegiles2610 yes 2000 is cool but only bad point is the lack of Nissan, Volvo and Peugeot works entries and that class b (similar to group n in rallying) production style cars like pug 306 and plain Honda accord. The pit stops for the works teams in 2000 were amazing compared to 98 and 99. I think they had it down to about 3.9 seconds. I didn't like 2001 even though Steve soper made a comeback in the 406 coupe. it was basically vauxhall vs Vauxhall. The cars and big boy manufacturers budgets were and are long gone. 2001 felt like a backward step
@@paulpearson3744 The pit stop times were amazing weren't they. Funnily enough, I've watched a few 2000 races on here recently. There only seem to be the Thruxton Highlights on here from 99, but there are a few more sets of Grandstand highlights on the Daily Motion site, which could be worth a look. I agree 2001 was a bit of a backward step, although it was a transitional year and things did improve (with field sizes etc). Still crazy to think 2001 was the last year to feature in a Video Game (Toca Race Driver). Cox and Watson were brilliant, as you say in your other comment. A bit like Cox and Parrish, they bounced off each other well didn't they. Murray was great though, as we're the old highlights🙂
Thank you very much for uploading this. Brought back memories of my childhood, watching this with my old man! Unfortunately it also leaves me wishing for the return of some proper motorsport. Liked and subscribed 👍🍻
This is exactly what the public want. Road cars which are taken to the track by MSport teams & racing. Manufacturers/MSport have completely lost this. What a fantastic era the BTCC really took off around this era.
I loved the Volvo estates in the mix, but does anybobdy know if Jan Lammers was penalised for punting out both Jo Winkelhock (10:05) and then Tim Sugden (11:02) at Snetterton? Perhaps it was all par for the course in those days.
@@gud6y The music is The Barber of Seville - Figaro's Aria. It is in the opening to Mrs Doubtfire also. It was also used in the the review of the 1987 RAC Rally. Quite a good piece of music.
Alfa conquered after reading a grey area of the rule book that was open for interpretation, lots of British whinging, it was a great season. Funny, two years later, Audi arrived with the 4wd a4, dominated and lots of British whinging about it.
Ford didn't really cover themselves with glory. Iirc, Rouse/Ford started the drama about the Alfa spoiler whilst running a Mazda V6 in the Mondeo........'Radish' wasn't the cleanest of drivers either. Alfa and Tarquini deserved the trophy.
As soon as they could get the parts homologated they did. I can remember the bmws sprouted m3 kits very quickly. Audi were worse then alfa. They shipped the race parts in the boot of the homologation model of 80 in german with a note saying they can't be used for road use because they weren't tuv approved. There's also picture on a mondeo testing with stock spoiler mounted about a foot on the boot lid! In reality the spoilers on the alfas was a diversion. They had a trick differential which gave them more traction. Other teams were underdeveloped in this area.
@@feydespiel. im not a Ford fan but I need to see what this Mondeo can do, thanks for the reply. ford if im right was rally champs for a very long time, good cars
I've got this on DVD, copied from when I recorded it onto VHS...Shown on the 27th December 1994 at 11:40am on BBC2.....I was surprised when they added onto the end the Toca Shootout race....in 1992 and 1993 the Beeb had shown the 2 races on BBC Sport, but not the 1994 race, until the review appeared, wonderful memories. You see the BBC 2 ident briefly at the end, it was to publicise the Ayrton Senna documentary on New Year's Day 1995 on BBC2, I still have the original tape recording.
Such a slick move. Reminds me of the time I saw a guy exiting Walmart putting a cigarette in his mouth at the precise moment he crossed the door into the outside
It's not just BTCC that was better in the 90's. F1 was better, Rallying was better. Just look at the state of motorsport now. I refuse to watch any of today's stuff because it's so anodyne and characterless.
