Best regular season game I ever watched. I just sat in awe in my living room for awhile after the game was over. My brother asked if I was alright. I was trying to gather my thoughts and recall all the great games I had watched…..then I just looked at my brother and told him, “that was the greatest game I ever seen”.
I was 10 years old and in 5th grade and even though my mom yelled at me to go to bed and I had to go to school the next day I stayed up and watched that game till the very end! I will never forget that night! I was jumpin up and down when we won which is what woke up my mom haha! Classic!
I remember falling asleep to this game because I had to get up for school in the morning. Taking for granted all the times I saw selway, Marino or Montana lead a 2 minute drill like it's nothing!
When NFL football was truly great and exciting. Less free agency meant there was less movement of players between teams, so you could count on seeing most of the same players for years on a single team. Football was limited to Sunday & Monday Night. MNF was still an event. Free ABC broadcast TV. That great instrumental lead-in theme, followed by Hank Williams Jr. Michaels, Gifford, & Dierdorf hosting. Kansas City with Joe Montana & Marcus Allen on Offense - every game Montana played with the Chiefs was a wonder to watch. Neil Smith & Derrick Thomas on Defense - Thomas was like a missile to the QB, and Smith doing his pump fake could get offensive linemen to jump before the ball was hiked, leading to penalties. Those were the days!!
I played college football with Willie Davis at UCA... Stud then and great recruiter now for the Chiefs. Ran a timed 4.3 Forty. Great hands in college too. Helped lead us to multiple DII / NAIA national championships.
Hell of a game. I was13 years old. We had the Chiefs Montana pulled that Mile high magic on us. Mile high salute to one of the greatest games I ever watched.
Watched this live as a kid with my gramps. Our family were 49ers fans. We followed Joe Montana to the Chiefs because we were Joe Montana fans first, 49ers fans second. It IS until now, the greatest Monday Night Football game ever played. The new generation never witnessed Joe Montana play and if Tom Brady did not exist, Montana will be spoken as the GOAT.
Elway and Montana are in the top class of QBs which also must include P. Manning, Brady, Unitas, Staubach and perhaps a few other QBs like Rodgers, Favre, Marino and Tittle. It is impossible to affirmatively declare one of these QBs as the greatest over another because each QB has his personal merits and to some extent drawbacks. Montana won 3 SB MVPs and 4 SBs but he missed a ton of games in his career and his back-up QBs often won without him. Elway won 2 SBs and an NFL MVP but he also lost 3 SBs. Staubach was 2-2 in SBs he started but he had great coaching and an outstanding defense on the other side. Brady is 4-2 in the SB so far with 3 SB MVPs but he also had Belichick (chicken or the egg?) and plenty of great receivers (Moss, Gronkowski, Branch, Chad Johnson, Welker, Edelman, Amendola, Hernandez, etc.). Favre was just 1-1 in the SB with 3 NFL MVPs but he also played 20 years. P. Manning was just 2-2 in the SB with 5 NFL MVPs and a SB MVP but his teams lost 43-8 and 31-17 in SBs where he did poorly. Tittle and Marino never won a championship.
When Davis made that catch, I couldn’t tell if I was crying, laughing, or screaming. I think the next time I made that noise was twenty years later: Salvy’s walkoff in the Wild Card. (Actually that was waaayyyy louder)
Berthasfave1 Yeah John Did go to 5 superbowls and lost 3 but still won back to back. Statistically Elway is probably the most prolific passer to ever play. But either are top 5 imo
Broke my heart as a 15 year old die hard Broncos fan. Also, does anyone know the name of the song at 5:25??? That’s one theme that I’ve always loved but Ive never been able to find what it’s called! I’ve listened to tons and tons of NFL films themes but I’ve never been able to identify what this particular song is called. I know it’s played in quite a few NFL Films features.
+Luke Enno Thanks in part to denver having Vaseline on their uniforms for that playoff game. Mark Schlereth even admitted he and several other Denver OL did it. Of course, the NFL did NOTHING about it because they wanted Elway to win. Broncos 1997-98 SB: Fixed to the Nth degree.
+Aaron McCall That and Denver putting Vaseline on their uniforms for that 1997 playoff game. Denver is a slimy disgusting franchise and Peyton Manning is perfect for that slimy group. Their fans are horrible too.
I believe Montana suffered a concussion in the AFC Championship versus Buffalo in 1994. If he doesn't, KC wins and plays the Cowboys. As much as I love Joe Montana and that 94' Chiefs team, I seriously doubt they could have beaten the Cowboys that year in the Superbowl.
Denver has some of the worst fans I've ever seen. They are very arrogant, cocky, and everything. When they win, they let you know about it, that's for sure. Plus they are very annoying fans as well. I too think Denver is a very slimy franchise.
I can't quite understand why a common fan can root for the Broncos but against the Pats. Broncos have that arrogant "Mile High" brand of football they like to rub into everyone else. It's really annoying. They hate the Pats "winning so much" from the early 2000s till now, but they were an underdog franchise for so long almost relocating to Jacksonville late 80s, St. Louis early 90s, and enduring the doormat underdog status for so long.
Definitely take elway to start a team with. Montana was great but had a great team around him on both sides of the ball. Elway could make you a super bowl contender all by himself.
yes he could. the first 3 superbowl that elway went to he literally carried the team on his back to get there even know they lost. but once he had a good hb n some recive
Great game, but an unfair matchup fir Elway. the Broncos defense sucked really bad that year while the Chiefs defense was top 10. Elway did what he could.
bisquik3006 Really? I'm not doubting, I just want to see the source. Because Denver couldn't stop anything throughout the year. I think they went 7-9, though at one point they were 7-6 which was amazing as they started 1-5 I think
John Rino Actually you are right. This was the 1994 season. I thought the game was played in January, but from the 93 season. Had a brain fart, and forgot Montana's comeback playoff wins were against Houston, and Pittsburgh. That being said, the Broncos had the #6 defense that year, and KC was ranked 7th. www.pro-football-reference.com/years/1994/
Okay... Do if U have rewind the game 402 passing "Joe" VS Alex Smith I have to say .. Do ur Best and As a 49ers Fan... KC ur Due For A SB. .... Yes U R!!!
+freelancepimp Peyton Manning and Tom Brady do the same thing. Yeah, they both had some great receivers too but they were and are both able to elevate the play of average receivers and maximize their game. Elway did it too. #itswhatthegreatonesdo
Willie Davis, and JJ Birden were two of the most talented receivers to ever play football in Kansas City. They were clutch way before Montana got there, and they really elevated their seasons when Montana came through.
Montana or Elway directed 4th quarter game winning drives like surgeons with the opponents knowing they're couldn't stop it from happening both saved their best for postseason play Elway in the AFC championship game leading his Broncos in the Cleveland cold verses the Browns on "The Drive" and his Mile High miracle verses the Houston Oilers when he converted 2 fourth down and the season without a timeout while Montana did it on the grandest stage in Super Bowl XXIII verses the Cincinnati Bengals on a 92 yard drive
Andrew Theodore I thought about it. I would still choose Montana over Elway. Wasn't hard to think about it. Besides Montana started in 4 Super Bowls and has godly stats in those games. Most impressive is the 0 int's in all the games put together. Something about Montana was just so darn clutch.
