This bodystyle has aged VERY well. This commercial is so old (i was like 16) but it still makes me wanna go out and buy one! I got to rent a 2010 for a week and absolutely loved it. Im a jeep guy but would consider one for next vehicle
I remember watching this on a VHS with my grandfather back in 93/94....he was given this demo tape before making the final decision on buying his "new style" dodge. So much nostalgia....awesome.
I miss these old truck commercials. The new one's suck... Doesn't even show a video of what it can do. These old ones were pretty cool. The ones now a days make trucks seem to luxurious.
Yeah, you can't haha, and apparently a truck needs a huge touch screen too. The thing with new trucks is that if one thing goes wrong, other things will not work. Just because they have so much tech into them.. I'm just fine never having a new truck, I'll just rebuild mine get used ones and fix those up. haha I personally wouldn't get anything over 07. That's when all the tech started to take over. Plus the late 90's to 2000's trucks have better looks, and are much easier to work on, and parts are plentiful.
I agree completely with trucks being advertised as luxurious these days. Companies are selling them as passenger vehicles and not as work trucks like they used to. Sad really.
I remember when the new dodges come out back then. They were a very well deserved and amazing re design and set the standard for putting curves back on trucks.
back when the avg joe could afford to buy a new truck. now even base models with nothing in them run you 30+ grand and we arent even talking about the upper trim level prices, those are hitting highend luxury car prices now with their 60+ grand price tags. And for what, you get a bunch of electronic bullshit that will go wrong and cost you an arm and a leg to fix after 3 or 4 years of owning one in this day and age? no thank you..
Actually, the base model Dodge Ram 1500 sold for around $14,500 about 24 years ago. That's nearly $24,500 in today's (2017) cash. Compare that today's trucks, which start $2,000 more, but keep in mind that today's trucks pass modern safety and emissions standards, are more powerful, tow more, haul more, come with much more standard features. When you think about, you're actually getting much MORE today than you did then. Also, keep in mind that $26,500 might seem like a lot, but that is suggested pricing. Many buyers pay way less than that once all the incentives are added up, especially if they're buying fleets of them. With incentives and dealer discounts, you can easily buy a base model Ford or Ram for under $20,000. As for "electronic bullshit that will go wrong and cost you an arm and a leg to fix after 3 or 4 years", our company has several trucks that are 4 years old or newer, and they absolutely do not cost an arm an leg to fix and are very reliable. In fact, they're proving to be more reliable than the trucks made 20 years ago. And honestly, it not like 90s American vehicles were all that well made. If anything, most vehicles were terribly made back then.
While 23 years and almost 300,000 miles have taken their toll on my old Ram. Its still a dependable work horse. Still works every day, Wish It had heated mirrors though :(
you must be hard on transmissions to go through three of them I maxed out the tachometer four times on my 89 Power Ram 250 and never had to replace the transmission.
I own a 1997 Ram 1500 Club Cab LWB 2wd 5.2L. By far the best truck you could ever own. My only 2 complaints are the infamous steering wander and cracked dashboard. As a temporary fix I installed a plastic dash cover. Not pretty, but effective. Next year I will be installing a new dashboard and steering gear box which will alleviate my wandering issues. I purchased my Emerald Green Machine in 2008 as a 2nd owner with only 80,000 miles on her for only $3000. Now, with nearly 190,000 miles and the only mechanical issues have been replacing the intake manifold gasket and catalytic converter. Say what you want about the 2nd Generation Rams but, I'd say she has more than paid for herself.
You can't be serious? Better? I guess you don't give a fuck about tow capacity, or fuel economy. Old doesn't mean better. When it comes to pickups, old usually means shit. The only thing these have going for them is their looks.
I have a 97 5.2 v8 with 139,000 miles and was owned by an old man. Never beat in the woods. Great truck runs strong. I ve done alot of custom work to it.
2gen Dodge Ram's are the best trucks ever made! I own two 1997 Dodge Ram's one is a 1500 4x4 sport 390stroker magnum & the other 1500 4x4 slt 360 magnum both are the most dependable trucks I've ever owned. Small block Mopar's they are powerful engine's if you build them right i can keep up with most new sport's cars with my 390 stroker #TeamDodge #DodgeTruckOrNoTruck
Just sold my 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 with 148,000 mi. I bought it almost brand new in 2001 with only 16,000 miles. That truck never failed me. I never had to spend a single dime on it besides regular maintenance. I don't think I'll ever find another truck as reliable as that one:(
"So you can hear your phone ringing on the highway" Man how the world has changed! We're the drivers better back then or did it just prove to be unsafe? Either way it's crazy to watch this.
Well back in the day it wasn't hard to drive and talk on the phone. Some cars even came with phones from factory. It all went to shit when texting came.
Man this made me almost tear up, I have a 95 5.2 v8 regular cab dodge ram with 224k miles and still starts right up and drives and sounds good, no check engine light...I previously had a v6 2001 ram I stupidly traded for an old junky beat up firebird car, I guess you live and learn though. Anyway, these dodge rams are my favorite vehicle ever, never left me stranded or had any major problems, very reliable. I know alot of people knock the trans in these but I've seen just as many GM vehicles with fried trans and engines, I still see alot of 2nd gen dodge trucks on the road and even a 1st gen every once in awhile...I don't put very many miles per year on a vehicle so this thing could last me a lifetime honestly, if/when the trans go out I'll have saved up enough money to get a new one/rebuild....the magnum engines are known to last a very long time too. The chevy trucks of this era got more mpg even with their 350 5.7's which is the only con besides the auto trans in these I'd say, but for being so reliable I'll accept a tiny bit less mpg
Love my 05 Dodge 2500 HEMI! It's my second Dodge. My 1st was a 01 2500 with the 360v8. Glad to have such a good truck. Also, the old truck commercials were the best
IM just saying, my dad is a ford guy, he owned a 1999 Ford 150, it was a good dependable truck, but i always loved my uncles 3/4 ton 1998 Ram 2500, so when i turned sixteen i bought a 1995 Ram $1500 single cab long bed for 1500, i loved that truck, i sold it to my brother in law, and I bought a 1998 extended cab, i loved that truck too, ended getting T-boned in it :(, so last year i bought a 2001 Chevy silverado crew cab...... i tried getting this truck to my taste, never liked it, so I sold it off because i got a better job, so I can say i am 20 years old and have gone back to dodge/Ram, i bought a 2012 Ram 1500 4x4 with the 5.7L hemi with 3.92 gears in the rear end, and i Fucking love this truck!
Can't say I would even consider buying a Chevy. I would think about buying a Ford, but a Dodge? No question. I would buy a Dodge any day. Best trucks for big guys and those who want a truck for just a vehicle or doing work. My father owned 4 Dodges and my grandfather owned several Dodge cars as well. Their V8s are powerful and very fast. Even Chrysler V6s are great. Legendary for reliability and power. They get good gas mileage too. Chevy and Ford could only come close with a 6 cylinder. My father said he averaged at least 19 or mpg with every Dodge he ever owned. The new Hemi can get about 23 maybe even 25 in good conditions.
well unless you stop and go alot lol, but like my ram is a crew cab 1500 with the 5.7L Hemi, my buddy has a 2011 Ford f-150 with the 5.0L, my ram can average more gas mileage then his ford, and we drive just about the same distance, and we both do drive equally, we both kinda got lead in our feet lol
My father in law had a 2001 dodge ram 2500 with the 24v cummins that had half a million kilometres and then sold it 2 years ago to buy a brand new Ram 2500 cummins longhorn...such a gorgeous truck. I wanted his old truck really bad, it was so fun to drive lol
And this is why trucks nowadays are just glorified grocery getting SUVs with a cargo bed. I place all of the blame on this Dodge Ram. But, Dodge had it right - all the fancy shit Ford and Chevy didn't have at the time, but still all business. Even as a regular cab, this Ram had plenty of features, no need for a huge cab with two extra doors to take away cargo space from the bed. I just don't see trucks in the form of a regular cab anymore, even more so with a long box.
As far as the argument for which of these old trucks last the longest? They all kick ass just the same when it comes to longevity. In general, I believe the only weak spot in a truck is an automatic transmission. But, in general, I believe any of these old Ford, Chevy and Dodge trucks could last a million miles, if properly taken care of. Can the new trucks last as long? We'll have to wait and see. I'd guess that they could, but just about every bell and whistle will be broken if not met with a slush box failure first.
Masayoshi, around where I am, So Cal, to get the barebones single cab with 8' bed, you have to go to a dealer that specializes in fleet commercial sales. They still make them, and sell them, no one pays attention to them. Even the electric company out here has a massive fleet of F-series, from F-150 to the F-650, all in XLT trim, not even base XL. All the regular Dealers sell the fancy toy pickup trucks.
i think the reason is the interiors start to fall apart ive probably had 6 of these 2nd gens and they always have broken dashes cupholders etc. even though there great trucks and actually my favorite
I bought my 98 extended cab ram with the 318 5.2 V8 4 years ago and it has 180k miles on it now. This truck has better suspension than your ford or chevy and mine has no road sounds when the windows are rolled up. The drive train in these other than your basic sensors are the hard boned 60s dodge engines. That 318 is cast iron other than the intake manifold in which agree that aluminum intakes are better. Also know that I am a master mechanic and metals engineer. So I am not naïve as far as vehicles.. If anyone owns a 94 to 02 dodge ram then they are closest to a 60s strong vehicle as they can get! Your 318 and 360 cast iron V8s are the good muscle engines
redcarrot wthnow Its not because your ford is old that it needs those things but is because of how the vehicle was used and what for and under what conditions.
I have a 90' F250 XLT Lariat supercab longbed, ZF5 speed, 4x4, tow package, rear anti-lock, International 7.3L IDI V8 diesel with Banks turbo, straight piped, propane injection system, with 122,000 miles.. and still, this video made me think about how a dodge would be to own instead...even though I ADORE my ford.
I miss my 94 ram it had a 360 but my first born just turned 16 so I gave it to him but at least I treated my self to a new 6.1 HEMI RAM long live dodge
Man i remeber when this truck came out. there was nothing like, there was just something different about the body, interioir JUST EVERYTHING THAT EVERYBODY LOVED. Now every truck kind of emulates this design
