I so remember this set. I remember how the store actually thought they were candy bars. The lady said "you'll rot your teeth". I just smiled and nodded.
I love the Buhner. The photography on these is great though... I never saw these...ever! If I were around the ages of 7-12 and there was a way to sleeve and display my favorite players and teams on stands or something, I would love them
These would be nice to get signed. As a kid I didn't like oversized cards but you could find a box for them. I like the big pictures and a lot of action shots.
I have to revise my comment... OMG, I just watched this video on my 55" TV and seeing these great pictures on the cards on the big screen was amazing. I wish I can remember which 3 subset cards i needed to complete the set. I agree storing them sucked, but the cards are beautiful in my opinion!
Jabs? The trick to unstick the cards is to take them by the top and bottom and bend them -forward and backward as you have the stack in your hands. Now obviously don't mangle them but after awhile it's no biggie and you get the hang of it. Don't worry about ruining the cards --you won't if you do it properly. I've been collecting since 1977 and learned that by 1979. Another way is take the stack of cards and tap the edge of the table with the stack on a couple sides of the cards.
I've never seen or heard about these cards before. The disdain in which you open these packs was very entertaining. In general, I don't like cards that are not standard size for all the reasons you pointed out. But these cards are not eye sores and the Game Breakers cards are quite nice. The Don Mattingly GB was very nice.
“Jerry has a great idea guys ... taller cards!” Jerry is now seeking employment outside of Fleer and came up with the concept of buying hot dog buns@12 per pack and then offering hot dogs in only an 8pk. Poor Jerry.
These were one of my favorites. I hate seeing them in the worst... beautiful pictures on the front and back. Fleer did thses to match up with NFL GameDay and NBA Jam Session cards. My first disappointment of this series... you've been spot on on the others!
I get it, as a baseball card collector these just don't fit it, but they look nice, would be really great for TTM or in person autos. Coming to Baseball Cards after collecting postcards for years, I really don't hate these.
As a hockey collector, Fleer Power Play, the NHL equivalent of Extra Bases, are equally awful. I've tried to collect 1 card of every NHL player and there are several players whose ONLY NHL card is in Fleer Power Play and it's infuriating.
I never had these but i had some fleer basketball that was skinny and tall like this. If there were normal size cards, i think the design would actually be pretty nice for 1994.
I think they're beautiful cards. They had a simple, clean design in an era of garish flamboyance. The focus is on the photography and the size suits that purpose. I'm not going to hate on Fleer for daring to be different. I can't help but contrast them to those Panini Prizm cards you just broke. The photography on those are a total afterthought. It's just a medium to slap on glitter and a serial number and stoke the greed of ebay flippers. Not to mention the airbrushed logos. What a joke.
Oh man, I forgot about these. I had a couple of packs worth of these and didn’t care for them. They looked fine but the size was just stupid. They would be nice to get signed with the nice and clean design but you just can’t store the dang thing.
At least with '89 Bowman and 1990 Topps Big, there was a precedent in their size with the mid 50s Topps and late vintage Bowman. I've never seen any other card in history the size of Extra Bases; reminds me of a physical ticket to a game (would've been a better concept than 'here's a larger card just because').
@@montrealsports29 Ah yep, forgot about the basketball one (only have one card of that, but a Jerry West), though it does escape my mind collecting baseball cards 99.99% of the time.
These are actually nice looking cards a shame they are over sized. As a kid I liked 89 Bowman and Topps Big but bought less of them then I other wise would cause of the size.
I've never seen these before, but the size of the cards makes these terrible. Not a fan of the mini cards either, but at least those fit in boxes and top loaders.
Easily one of the worst. Zero question. And they didn’t fit the sleeves that were sold at the time. If you ended up with a card you wanted, you had no way to protect it. You had to put it in a sleeve, then slide another sleeve over the top.
Hey jab I love your videos and want to start collecting baseball cards never really did but I really wanna start collecting cause all I ever collected was hockey
Ian Kinsler has been extremely consistent throughout his career, it wouldn't be fair to write him off and lose total respect for him over an incident in which it's unclear what his intention was. To compare it to what McDowell did seems like a bit of a stretch.
@@JabsFamily The camera angles provided online do not provide clear evidence, in my eyes, that he was directing his taunts to the crowd rather than the dugout. Thank you for replying btw, very cool of you to still interact with fans.
I actually like the overall design of the cards in that set. The graphics are simple, not flashy at all. The size of them certainly makes it difficult for a collection in a binder using the sheets. Standard size cards are so much easier for transporting as well. On a side note: Freddie Freeman just hit a walk off solo home run in the bottom the 10th and the Atlanta Braves beat the Milwaukee Brewers for the second straight game. Braves won last night 12-8 and tonight's final was 4-3.
They actually do make soft sleeves, top loaders & binder pages..(6 a page) for these cards.. 1994 NHL Parkhurst tall boy Parkies were pretty big in Canada at that time.. As well as old vintage hockey, basketball, NFL & CFL.. Among others odd tall boy releases. Protection is out there :)
I believe all major sports cards had a set of this sized card. They were eye appealing to me but like you said a tough card to store. Thanks for sharing.
Never saw this set until looking at Trading Card Database site a few months ago. Do remember NHL Powerplay from the same year (the 'oddball' Fleer equivalent to that sport).
High gloss an issue. I’m cool with the size. I do have a box of NFL Gameday. Something different. It’s 1994, baseball is about to ruin itself for a few years, who cares about preserving an oversized card? It’s James MOO TAN Game Breaker Justice was 40-120 with a 3rd place MVP finish and as the card says he led all right fielders in putouts.
I’m all for companies trying something fresh and/or different. While this didn’t catch on, I won’t blame them for at least giving it a shot. Meanwhile, one of my favorite sets in the last 28 years (hint, hint) has not fallen victim to the ‘worst list’ yet. Fingers crossed it won’t...we’ll see! 🤞
I thought I had every Rickey Henderson card prior to 1996, then this. Not surprised I didnt buy them though. My first thought would have been, "Those won't fit in my binder."
That Tony Tarasco you passed may have been a rookie. Not sure when his debut was, but it was right there in 93, 94 range. And Javier Lopez was one of my favorites as the Braves began their ascent. Aside from the pitchers, there was Chipper, Andruw, Ryan Klesko, Javy, Grissom(Expos first), Justice, Gant, there were so many players I loved. As a kid Gerald Perry, Murphy, and Bob Horner were my ‘I need that card’ guys.
Well you are one for four on what you call the worst sets that turn out to be sets I like. I like set number 10 1990 Donruss I hate set number 9 1990 Topps and traded as well. The borders were horrible. I hate set number 8 1995 Fleer. I am indifferent to set number 7 1994 Extra Bases. Tune in next video to see where it will fall in my like or hate column. I like the design but the size is terrible. So let us call it a push. Not hated but not loved.
i actually collected the basketball card version i had to buy special pages for my collection album they would never stay in good shape because of the size
