I’m doing a countdown of the worst card sets ever and today we are starting with #10 1990 Donruss. I chose the sets based on the design, set checklist, overall ugliness, and value or lack there of.

I bought a large lot of sets from 74-94 a couple of month ago. This set was in the lot unopened and it will remain that way. Reminds me of the old story of the guy who had a case of 90 Donruss in his car. Someone broke out the rear window and added another case.

I won a few "instant winner" prizes from these packs. The prize was 5 free packs of Donruss Baseball from that year.. I actually like this set with the red border... To each their own..

Instant win story- My dad splurged and pre-ordered a 10 box case of this for about $150 for us to open partly because of the instant win promotion. I was 13 years old in 1990 so I was really excited. We opened every pack and had one winning wrapper out of the 360 packs (the game was on the inside of the wrappers). It was for 5 free packs of 1990 Donruss. I'm guessing that was the only prize. That's about a 2 dollar value. So if 1 million of those wrappers were winners , and you got one per 10 boxes, you can do the math to come up with the astronomical amount of cards that were produced. Not to mention there was a second wave of packs later in the year that didn't even offer the Instant win promotion. What an epic example of Junk Wax!!!

I've just gotten into the sports card hobby within the last month, mostly 80 and 90s hockey, but my dad expressed interest in opening some baseball from that time so I found your channel just so I can get an idea of what to look for. I've never been much of a sports fan but there's just something about opening trading cards that's just a lot of fun!

BTW here's something Eric you'll appreciate. When i was in 7th Grade (im 38) my algebra teacher would give out baseball cards for doing well on quizzes and tests. If you were most improved then you got a premium card. He handed out packs at the end of the year too. Being a teacher i thought you'd appreciate that. As a baseball player then i loved getting cards for doing my work. Gave us struggling math students like me something to push for.

I personally love this year’s design. I’ve collected cards since 1985 & I can remember opening up multiple packs of these cards. For me, all of my favorite players were in this set & I kept all of my favorite players it didn’t matter if it were donruss topps fleer upper deck score or leaf. Maybe I enjoy the 80s 90s card sets because I collect cards because I enjoy the players & don’t just collect cards to make money. Love your videos by the way. Peace ✌🏽

Back in the early 90s I remember these boxes at the local Ben Franklin store. They moved so slow that they packaged them with bio-books of classic ball players

Before they released this set, Donruss sent a single 2-card pack of "preview" cards to their master dealers to showcase the new design. There's only 12 cards in the set and each one has a different image than the regular card in the set. Super rare, it's hard to find completed sales of them and they aren't terribly expensive. I just got the Nolan Ryan one and I think it would be cool to collect the entire set since 1990 Donruss is considered the worst set of the entire junk wax era.

Man i bought these in bunches when they came out (not as much as 1990 Topps though, ugh). I had only been collecting barely 2 years at that point. I'd say 1989 Donruss are the absolute best cards of the late 80s to early 90s Donruss sets. I'm STILL recovering from the 1981 Donruss box break....

Yeah I have so many of these. I'm trying to put together the 91 and 92 Diamond Kings set (just because I'm bored). I thought those were the best. That's when Donruss started to use the high gloss finish and "gold" foil. If you have any I will gladly take them off your hands. Lol. Oh Hi Hunter I know you are watching. 1990 was the first year I started buying tons of packs that were not Topps. I was born in 1979 and started in full force in 1987 with Topps.

idk jabs, i think people have there own perspective on cards. me i just started my channel and just started collecting since i was a kid and a friend blessed me with a whole box of 1990 donruss to do for one of my first videos. to me i think this is awesome to have in my pc for starters i dont have much. i like the look of them and only thing i didnt like was the cursive handwriting but to get this free was awesome and alot of people enjoy just the hobby no matter what pack it is and they want to see more of whats out there!! thanks for all your videos it made me want to collect and start my own channel.

I can imagine the late Don West and Eddy Lewis selling 1990 Donruss Wax Boxes on Shop At Home for $99 a box. Don would be screaming how rare these boxes are and tell everyone that right now, each pack is going for $8 - $10. Buy 5 of these.

I remember buying many of these with the 1990 error craze looking especially for the Nolan Ryan swap. Also the first factory shrink-wrapped boxes I remember (Upper Deck did the same with its sophomore release, but was released a week or so after Donruss).

I just bought three boxes of this set off of ebay for around $12 each, totally worth it for the price. I'll enjoy doing a box opening of it at some point over the next couple of months. You're right about that red boarder, harsh to look at over an extended period of time.

I'm from Sweden, I do like baseball somewhat (almost no one plays baseball in Sweden). I do try to watch a few Pirates games a year. Never owned a baseball card, but still got stuck on your channel watching you open cards. Keep it up!

Big Lots used to have an unlimited supply of boxes of these things. I bought a LOT of them back in the day. They don't bother me at all. In fact, some good baseball card memories from them.

Back when this set was new, we went nuts for the error cards of Nolan Ryan and whatnot. I opened about 2 cases in 1990 at about $15 a box. I won three lousy prizes, all free packs lol.

On the blowout cards forum someone claimed to have pulled a winning wrapper for the contest in 2012. Another member on there suggested that the prize was a million dollars and World Series tickets for life. Guessing they never had to pay up.

I remember buying what seemed a boat load of these Donruss cards in 1990 whether it was wax packs,rack packs or blister packs. I too was not a fan of this year design and the promotion was difficult to win anything. Good set to put in a top ten worst of all time.

Putting this set together all dead centered is a challenge, and makes a nice collection. So don't knock it completly. PSA-10 of Ryan, Sosa etc go for reasonable $ 20-25. Also there is the "Aqueous Test" cards as indicated on the backs - they are worth some bucks.

I actually like the look of this set; opened about 5 boxes when it came out. Hated that the wrappers had a tendency to destroy the back card (this box actually doesn't look too bad) and the collation was TERRIBLE. 5 boxes and I don't think I made a complete set, or if I did, it took all 5 boxes to do it. Also, regarding the backgrounds on the Diamond Kings; it was the 90's. If you thought these were strange, you need to check out the first two years of Skybox basketball.

You should really try to start a viral trend where all your viewers gather up all the 90 Donruss, 91 Fleer, etc. and destroy them. Let's get rid of these blights on the history of trading cards once and for all. Make it a giveaway for the most creative destruction, e.g. turning the cards into compost and growing a beautiful flower.

There were Tom Glavine and John Smoltz MVP cards in this set that had the stats switched around on the back of the card and the fronts showed wrong names too, John Smoltz is Tom Glavine, and Tom Glavine is John Smoltz. There are some other very minor variations in the set as well.

I bought 3 or 4 boxes of this stuff from Big Lots in 1994 to try to build the set. It didn't work. *sigh* Was only able to complete one puzzle from all of that too. *double sigh*

At the time, I thought these were great. They were the first baseball cards other than O-Pee-Chee that were in stores here. Later that year, Upper Deck high series also popped up in stores, but it wasn't until the following year that all the various products were available.

I actually like the look of the front of the 1990 Donruss with the red, black and white with the cursive script. The orange back just looks weird with the red front. White backs with black print would look so much better. I actually remember having some of those cards when I was a kid in the 90s.

I think this set would have looked better if they had done like Score did with their early sets, and that was to change the color of the card every 110 cards or so. So, for example, 1-110 could have been the red that we see here, then 111-220 could have been green (wasnt "The Rookies" set green that year?), 221-330 could have been the light blue of the "Best Of" sets from that season. 331-440 Red, 441-550 Green, 551-660 Blue. Or the whole set could have been black with white lettering which I would have loved :) Donruss and Fleer both should have hired 9 year old me back in the day to design their sets.

Seriously the worst ever. My little league in the mid 90s had many boxes of these in their snack shack. It got broken into one night and totally cleaned out. Not one pack of 90 Donruss’ were touched

Horrific set and the common players are beyond forgettable. 91 Fleer might toke the cake though. You might want to remind us to wear sunglasses when those yellow borders pop out of the pack. I do like the 91 Topps design though, and they're some good photos in that set

NOT TRUE! My brother bought one of those boxes for 15$. After opening all of the packs and grading and locating the value of them, he realized that he had earned about 20$ in cards worth a dollar or more alone! this means that he earned 5$ in profit!

I’ll take 91 Fleer anyday over 2013 Panini Triple Play. At least Fleer used color photographs of star players. Triple Play hired B-grade cartoon strip and anime artists to draw every card and then crammed the packs with stupid stickers and tattoos with bat and jersey pieces that belonged to no one. There is not one redeeming quality about Triple Play.

Even the wrappers sucked b/c it can be torn so easily upon opening the packs. The errors also included the no All-Star trademark that nobody cared about has no extra value.
