Alvin Harper holds the NFL record for highest yards per catch in playoff history (with a 20 catch minimum) at 27 ypc. In fact in 10 playoff games with the Cowboys Harper averaged 20 yards or more per catch in 7 of those games. Dallas won all 7. In the other 3 playoff games where he averaged under 20 yards per catch Dallas only posted a record of 1-2, with the lone victory being the 1993 Divisional game against the Packers. Harper was very vital to the Cowboys playoff success.
Could you imagine his stats, had he played in a pass first offense. Imagine him in SF, GB, Denver, Buffalo, Houston, Miami. He would’ve had numbers like Marino, Elway, Farve, Young. Who knows had he been a SB champion, but his numbers, would’ve been great.
@@royresendez5157 Thank you Roy Resendez for telling the truth. There's been so much revisionist history about Aikman in recent years by idiots who either 1) hate the Cowboys anyway so they downplay any great Cowboy player by saying it was other factors that Aikman (or Emmitt Smith) benefited from, or 2) only look at stats. Those of us who were watching all those years knew he ran a carefully constructed timing offense that was run-first, with the passing part of it throws to where the receiver was supposed to be at a given moment, which only very accurate QBs could do. No West Coast or Run And Shoot passer-friendly stuff with Dallas. It took someone who could put his ego in check and be careful with the ball on long punishing drives. On some rare times when he had to dispense with the timing his stats could get gaudy.
@@mikegillaspy1721 nothing wrong with Switzer? why don't you look up Troy Aikman's discussion about Switzer on youtube about how he'd changed from when Aikman played for him at Oklahoma before going to UCLA to what he was with the Cowboys. He doesn't have a lot of good things to say about him. Also the only way Johnson pissed off his boss was by stealing the spotlight away from him.
its hilarious how often people call aikman overrated who have never seen him play coz of the stats of being on a running team. aikman would be throwing 4800 yards a season in a modern offense. no one had an arm like him. so insanely accurate. As far as pinpoint precision goes, the most accurate passer ever.
Aikman name doesn't come up with the greats as much as it should but I would not want another dude throwing me the football. His accuracy was and is unmatched. It was bombs away in these glory days.
And just think Jimmy Johnson's first big move was a retarded boneheaded one. He threw away the first overall pick for Steve Walsh. Could have had Junior Seau or Cortez Kennedy.
That was and is the worst defensive call in the history of football. No safety in man to man. Outside of D. Sanders and D. Green, there are no corners that can cover that play, yet H.S, college, and pro teams will call that play no matter how many times they give up big plays. 🥶
@@slarsp2 THAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED(& AIKMAN would have thrown "the prettiest pass") against the perfect D! If u knew anythng about this offense, it's precision passes(by #8), and Ernie Zampeeze, we ran when we wanted, threw when we wanted.
@@N.a.j.i. I know the CB position. I played with LA at Sonoma, I know football. No safety, one on one (cover zero) is a disaster waiting to happen unless you run a 4.2 or better. The QB has an easy read. All he has to do is throw the ball to the goal post, put air under it and see if the receiver will get caught at the 5 or score. Like I said, at all levels corners get beat on that play, by the worst QB’s and worst receivers. Terrible coaching.
@@slarsp2 We ALL PLAYED FOOTBALL, and some haven't (and still know the game). IF U read my comment, it had nothing to do w/defender. Troy woulda thrown a pretty and accurate pass. Thats what he is known for. It's why he was taken 1st n his draft. HE HAS DONE THAT AGAINST PERFECT D's
@@N.a.j.i. what I’m saying is that in that defense, anybody can make that throw, and most if not all WR will beat the corner on that play if there is no safety. I have seen it at all levels, ALL !!!!
coolandtall Facccccts. As much as I love the great Emmitt Smith I'm also mad because he was too dominant as a franchise running back because he relegated Aikman to decoy status within the Cowboys offense to such an extent that jealous fans from other teams & idiotic millennial stat geeks who never saw prime Troy Aikman play who only look at his pedestrian career passing statistics think he was an overrated, no talent along for the ride game manager ala Bart Starr, Bob Greise, Phil Simms, Eli Manning, Trent Dilfer, Alex Smith, Jeff Hostetler, or Mark Rypien which just isn't the case at all.
@@kirbygene Thanks much appreciated. These current day fantasy football stat geek NFL fans truly need to put some respect on the legend Troy Kenneth Aikman's name ijs.
They didnt throw to him in the san fran match. And then Irvin and Harper hit free agency. Dallas should have signed Harper instead of keeping the coke machine!
I'm a Bills fan...but I still hit the like button even though Harper and his teammates smoked my team. Hopefully good fortune will come soon and the Bills will win a SB just like America's Team.
I was born and raised in Dallas.... Cowboys fan right here... Those early 90s Bills teams were a hell of team.... 4 straight super bowls. That's incredible no matter what
How awesome now, that the Bills are moving towards that direction. Josh Allen has been a solid QB, and Coach McDermott has been everything, they'd hope he would be as HC. The Bills are becoming a powerhouse, and are doing it lowkey, while the Chiefs get all they hype.
Aikman became razor sharp in the big games. His attention to detail was off the charts. Bigger the game the better he played. I was one who was hard on him when he played. I'd take #8 against sny of them with the championship on the line.
Kate Ground Only because we didn't throw for 400yrds a game. We were 'spoiled' w/22 and that running game. Aikman was the truth tho (A part of me wish we 'needed' to throw more..He woulda answered the bell).
I'm not even a Cowboy fan, but I've always liked their uniforms. But these, that they wore in 1994 (both the white ones here and the dark ones) were my favorites. These rocked. And this team was awesome. Even with a coach that had no control over them, they were so talented that had the officials not decided to fix it so Dallas had no chance, they'd have given SF all they wanted in the final moments of that NFC Championship game. Great NFL action then.
Jack Kitchen what are you talking about Jimmie Johnson a complete control over the team it was Barry Switzer that let them to act like a f****** frat house... you clearly don't know anything about the Cowboys
John Collins He was clearly referring to the '94 Cowboys & rookie head coach Barry Switzer's lack of institutional control. I suggest you read that gentleman's comment again for clarification.
I remember watching this game, and for this specific play feeling like something special was gonna happen when before the play the perspective switched to the camera above and this accurate bomb happened. So exciting! it's unbelivable its been 26 years.
DanielSong39 came pretty close. Big part why cowboys lost was because emmitt injuring both of his hamstrings. And had the controversial pi on been called the game could have ended differently. But whatever, not a cowboys fan, in 1994 niners had one of the best teams in their history and i dont think no qb had a better season than steve young in 1994
That's Jimmy Johnson - no matter what u think of him personally, he was the daringest coach in NFL history! Throwing deep out of end zone in a playoff, damn. BTW - Alvin Harper stunk, he was made to look good by Irvin and Emmit (and Troy), once he was "the guy" he busted. He wasn't that good at UT either, fast w/ no hands.
Troy Aikman and Drew Brees are the deadliest pure accurate passers in the history of the NFL especially when it's the 40+ yard chunk plays, hit em in stride.
Thought when widescreen TVs came around we were going to see the plays better down field if they just framed it right.. instead they used creative choice to still film the same way with 4:3 TV frames..one could see the entire play unfold with routes,etc....more people would stay home maybe??!
@@bigtip8371 I want to see it regularly from the perspective of the QB or middle linebacker's position. I don't understand why seeing it from the sidelines is so popular and why people think thats the best way to understand what's happening. There's a reason the film and pictures that team personnel look at during practice and games is taken from those perspectives.
I'm an Eagles fan and we got more than a long way to go. You guys got all the talent in the world. I hate saying it but it's true. There's no way you guys shouldn't be in the Super Bowl this year.
Both the 90s Cowboys and 49ers would mop the floor with today's Patriots teams. Those teams were the two best teams in Football. It was like a Pro Bowl every time those two teams played.
Allen Greene: You are absolutely correct! I respect the Patriots, but there is no way in hell any of NE's Super Bowl teams would have beaten the Cowboys, or the 49ers. Period.
They were so loaded with talent, many sports writers felt they could have won four, possibly five in a row if Jimmy had stayed. That 92 team had Leon Lett, Darren Woodson and Jimmy Smith (ex Jag receiver who had a good career...look at his highlights) as backups.
@@mikehammerle928 The first win was the NFL championship, the following year it became the superbowl when the leagues merged so technically no they didnt win 3 superbowls in a row.
Can we talk about this throw for a second? 55 yards on a rope. Don't wanna hear anymore kids telling me Aikman was overrated because of his numbers. Period.
damn, Nate Newton and company used to give Reggie white hell! R.I.P. to reg.....he, Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmons, golic and them, with philly, used to terrorize Dallas until they matured and added some great linemen. R.I.P. Jerome Brown.
sha9infinite what would have been something if Buddy wouldn't have gotten fired Jerome wouldn't have died n Reggie stayed to c the rivalry against Eagles woulda been crazy
Montana was over rated. He would throw a quick slant to Rice for 8 to 10 yards and then Rice would run for 60 or 70 for a TD. So Montana's stats are not reflective of his overall passing ability. Montana could not throw the ball like Troy did on this particular play. This play was all Troy. A perfect lead pass so the WR did not have to slow down one bit.
I guess you didn't see the Montana to John Taylor 97 yard play vs. the Rams on Monday night.Same set of circumstances as far as his team being backed up. If this play was all Troy, then all Harper had to do was wait in the end zone and wait for the football to arrive. C'mon man! Give Harper as much credit as you would give Rice credit. The receivers finshed the play in both accounts. Anyway - look at the stats. Montana won 4 Super Bowls, Aikman 3. Montana's teams during that time beat all of his toughest competition. The Bears, Giants, Redskins,Eagles, Rams, Saints, etc. feared playing SF during that time. Montana was the Tom Brady and Michael Jordan of his time. Nobody wanted to face him with the game on the line. Clutch. I never seen Aikman do that. No matter how good your team is, you are not going to blow everybody out 100 percent of the time. You are also not going to be perform 100 percent on your game all the time. You still have to find away to win those games. Can't say that with Troy. Montana you would.
And one play don't make you the GOAT. Randall Cunningham did that vs. Buffalo Bills ON THE ROAD, but he isn't the GOAT. Warren Moon threw for over 500 yards in a game and he isn't either. Now if you had said Terry Bradshaw , then yes that would be an real discussion. Bradshaw won 4 Super Bowls in the 70s with Pittsburgh when WRs were murdered from the time they tried to get off the line of scrimmage and few went over the middle to think about making a catch. QBs during the 70s were treated like rag dolls by defensive linemen. Aikman, with his injury-prone self, wouldn't have made it thru 3 games in the NFL then the way he liked to whine. The GOAT? Bradshaw or Montana are easy picks then Aikman any day., any week and anytime.
+Elder Samuel Williams bradshaw??? you just lost any sort of crediblity...what a moron...anyway..Aikman isnt even in the top 10..here are qb's better than him just off the top of my head...Montana..Elway..Rodgers..Brees..Manning...Rothlesburger...Unitas..Marino..Staubach...Favre...Young.. Kelly...Moon..Brady...thats 13 without really trying...and ELWAY==GOAT
Those in my opinion were the Cowboys best jerseys they've ever had. I don't see Dallas wear them anymore. I only remember seeing them in '94 during the 75th Anniversary Season.
Pure synergy. Aikman's poise and accuracy. The brute force and extreme agility of the offensive line providing all the time in the world to make the throw. Irvin/Harper's great hands and speed. Truly amazing.
That Ernie Zampesse system worked well. Troy was very impressed with the California native who is 86 years old now, his son, Ken zampesse coaches for the Washington Commanders now. When Ernie went to U.S.C. he ran a winning touchdown against Notre Dame from the Trojans 38 and could also punt. An amazing American coach.
I miss those days what a team we had the cowboys 90 s dynasty aikman s accurancy strong arm alvin harper was a big time deep threat with his speed that offensive line of dallas emmitt smith michael irvin moose johnston fullback who can block the hell out of you our defense our when we had a defense charles haley darren woodson deion sanders i miss it as cowboys fan i miss it 1990 s was a great decade to be a cowboys fan and i miss jimmy johnson forever grateful 🙏 building this dynasty
Man I miss Texxas Stadium. Every seat in there war perfect from the 50yd line to the end zones!! Those were the good ole days I highly doubt that Dak Prescott can make that throw. Sheat
Man those 90s cowboys teams were fun to watch.. unless you were the packers Bill's or 49ers lol actually the 49ers beat them in the 94 nfc championship game that year but struggled previously with them
John Madden was right Dallas offensive line was best ever. Eric Williams was absolute beast he used to dominate Reggie White. They used to move Reggie around so he wouldn't have to go against Williams. Williams should be in Hall of Fame.
It was smart to let Harper walk he was paid by Tampa Bay to be a number one. He is one of the biggest free agency busts of all-time. Harper was one of the guys who got a big head.
@@robgbaby well even he knew on Dallas at best he could have been 3behind Irvin and Novacheck I'm sure I misspelled the best tight end to ever play the games name Jay!.i agree he wasn't # 1 but he could have been way happier at 3 accomplishing more there than anywhere else.He needed to b2 the other guy he would have been the # 1 3rd go to guy to ever play the game !!! Lol now that statement deserves a little Ron Burgandy Crew and their legendary one line descriptions!he was the #1 3rd choice 100% of the time!!
