Look at all the information you get in the first minute and five seconds, complete with the epic SpeedWorld intro. Man, do I miss efficient storytelling.
You just didn't see these Gen 4 cars with restrictor plates be able to do the things that 27 car did in this race at tracks like Daytona and Talladega. That car had to be making 30 or 40 extra horsepower than the rest of the field to be able to pull out of line and get that sort of a run without drafting help.
On July 2, 1994, ESPN's Speedworld traveled to Daytona International Speedway, for the live coverage of the Pepsi 400, in Daytona Beach, Florida. A young Jimmy Spencer won the race, in the #27 McDonald's Ford Thunderbird.🙂
2:12:06 = Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy.. You sure did live up to your Mr. Excitement moniker this race. EXCITING MOVE, EXCITING FINISH, EXCITING WIN!!!!
Jr Johnson had an intake manifold that had some kind of vacuum operated spacer that would give engine a little more air under the restrictor plate. GENIUS, They had it for a few races until they got the largest fine in Nascar History at the time. 50,000 I think. I still like Ricky Rudds hydraulic rear spoiler set up better in the Tide Car at Indy.
sivvybee It's funny to see that in 2017 season, they are still getting busted for cheating. I think almost every week this year a team has been fined. lol!
There were rumors at the time that McDonald's was threatening to pull their sponsorship of the #27 car at the end of the 1994 season, since Spencer hadn't won anything, and Junior Johnson's wins were coming few and far between, if at all at that juncture. "Miraculously" Spencer wins back-to-back plate races at Daytona and Talladega in July, and McDonald's did resign for another season.
doctorindy actually both McDonalds.and Budweiser left Johnson after 94... In 95 Elliot started his own team with McDonald's and Bud Went to the 25 Hendrick Car.
He made it through a whole race without crashing. & by the gift of god had Junior Johnson equipment. He almost crashed the whole field at lap 2. He sucked so bad. There’s a reason no team would hire him for a second year.
