This may be my first time playing Sonic 3. I enjoyed my time playing it this morning. Being fresh to the game it felt a lot like I was being thrown from one thing to the next, throughout the whole experience, not necessary a bad thing, it was just disorienting to play from moment to moment.
I immediately enjoyed the look of the enemy character sprites; his friends & allies are iconic. The fire graphics look a little odd to me in 2024, and some of the details throughout the starting levels are a bit distracting, and can be make it hard to understand where Sonic needs to go next. I think with a little bit of replay though, that wouldn't be an issue for the player. Overall, you can to tell that the designers put the extra effort into this one. I'm remembering that Jirard, the Completionist, says he likes this game quite bit.
The wiki reminded me that Micheal Jackson had his hands in the music; thinking about the music on the first level, and I can hear it. In retrospect, I should have looked to see if could have turned off the music for the recording; I don't expect that kind of functionality from an emulated 16-bit game, so I didn't cross my mind until now.
Adding to the challenge, there is significant controller lag for Sonic 3 on this PS3 collection, especially during the bonus round. Overall, for retro Sonic fans, I can see why it is loved.
