Jim Maloney was always there to catch Chaney before he went completely off the rails. They were a great partnership and I don’t think Chaney was ever the same after Maloney died.
Good for you John Chaney calling out Calipari like that. Sadly it was not until Calipari left that UMass got investigated and the banners came down. Calipari needs to be fired from Kentucky where he's at now. There's a reason why Memphis students and alums blocked his being honored when the school tried to a few years ago.
Now, college basketball is just a bunch of one and dones. A freshman shoots 38% from the floor and 29% on 3-pointers, and he declares for the NBA Draft.
They were in the tournament almost every year when I was growing up and thought they were one of those top schools like UNC or Duke. It wasn't until later I realized how much he elevated them.
Temple NEVER made a final 4 under Chaney and despite this anomaly he was a better role model for his players than an X and O's coach. Temple is located in the worst part of Philly (North) and they practiced at 6am,so he was somewhat limited in the type of kids that were up for that for 4-5yrs. Still I think he was overrated as a coach, and underrated as a human being and role model. RIP Chaney
The day after that tirade, one of my coworkers (a Temple grad and fellow member of our internal Fantasy Hoops League) sent me an email (in jest) reiterating Chaney’s words, “Next I see you, I’m gonna kick your ***! You remember that!” As league co-commissioner, when I published the fantasy scores, I added a blurb stating the league was considering disciplinary action, including “fines, surcharges, and/or a suspension levied by the commissioner’s office.” RIP John Chaney
