Definitely my favorite racing theme of all time. I miss CBS' coverage. Ken Squier brought an air of dignity to every CBS broadcast. Mike Joy and Buddy Baker in the booth calling the race, it's almost an insult to compare them to Joy's current announcing team of DW and McReynolds. Baker has more charisma and is thousands of times less annoying than DW and Larry McReynolds.
Yes, the Winston Tower was being expanded at that time. It actually made that stand more centered on where the old press box/roof was (where the white suites at the base are there) than what it had been (just centered on the start/finish line). One more note, you can tell the old section from the new by how the glass is on the front of the tower sections. Old=white on top, new=not much white, almost all glass.
If I recall, this theme was also used during CBS's coverage of the 1995 Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix - 200 mile CART/IndyCar race where AJ Foyt was so close to winning his first IndyCar (before the open-wheel split) race as an owner until (his driver) Eddie Cheever ran out of fuel with 2 laps to go......giving the win to Emerson Fittipaldi (which turned out to be his last win).
That was also CBS's last Indycar race until 1998 when they aired 2 IRL races that June & July due to ESPN/ABC (the rights holders at the time) airing the World Cup. Then CBS aired select Champ Car races from 2002-2005 which was their last involvement in open wheel racing (unless you count their involvement with Formula E this past season).
Recorded this track to my phone so I can listen it whenever. Just as the old NFL on CBS score as well as the college football music this song brought emotion to the event and made its significance known as opposed to the "show" we're now exposed to.
1996 Daytona 500 still pisses me off to this day. I was a Terry Labonte fan growing up until he retired and he DOMINATED that race until he lost a cylinder with about 70 laps left and fell off
@@djmohab2 I was shocked that sterling had motor problems he had a really good restrictor plate motor builder by the name of Sheldon "runt" pitman who helped him win his 2 Daytona 500 and I think several races at talladega.
When Natalie Portman was a beautiful teenager, when TurboMan dolls were being made in both real life and the _Jingle All the Way_ film, when Wishbone was still telling stories... the works.
this was from the 1996 Daytona 500. CBS continued using this theme until the end of the 1997 NASCAR season. when it was replaced by the last theme was used from the 1998 until the 2000 season.
@bucbrett Its too bad McReynolds has turned himself into a cartoon character in the booth. He has a ton of knowledge about the sport that gets cheapened by playing to the audience. As for DW, he was always a 'card' so to speak, so I dont really fault him. Larry Mac was a much more serious, calculated man as a crew chief. If you ever see his interviews as a crew chief, he certainly carried himself with much more dignity then.
nah, im sorry, 98 was OK but this is more better. it's for a drama-paced, action-fulled sport like any auto racing scene is, like nascar. this is THE perfect theme.
