1995 - 2000 GM OBS Truck Automatic Transmission Shift Cable Replacement Adjustment (Chevrolet & GMC)

In this video we diagnose a problem with not being able to shift the automatic transmission into gear. This is almost always due to the transmission shift cable bushing giving out on one end of the transmission shift cable (also known as a transmission control cable). The procedure to do a full transmission shift cable replacement, and the cable shift adjustment, is what we will cover here. The adjustment of the transmission shift cable is crucial, as without following that step you will be unable to shift the transmission into lower gears such as 1st.
The vehicle illustrated is a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban K1500 LT, but the procedure is applicable to any GMT400 body type Chevrolet or GMC old body style (OBS) truck from 1996 onwards (OBS carry over models into 2000 as well) including 1500, 2500, and 3500 both C and K models. It would also be applicable to the Cadillac Escalade in this year range. The transmission shift cable part number used is applicable to both the 4L60E and the 4L80E automatic transmissions.
The eBay and Amazon search links below are paid links, for which I may be compensated and earn a commission, if you choose to buy the parts and tools shown in this video thru them:
If you are looking for the transmission shift cable itself, GM 15037353: ebay.us/hEsxK1 and amzn.to/3fSTZDW
For the "U" clip retainer GM 3526540 (superseded by GM 23281508) and the shift lever GM 15724078: ebay.us/vzByMO
And for the GM service manual shown in this video: ebay.us/GWhTQ0
Finally if you want to give the aftermarket bushing substitute I mentioned a try: ebay.us/FLWWRo and amzn.to/3fUpnlx remember you have to ream out the cable ends to go this route as I mentioned near the end of the video.

Just wanted to say thanks for the video. I replaced mine today, frayed under carpeting. Couldn't squeeze the fittings out of the u-shaped bracket, so just busted them out with a screwdriver and mallet. Mechanics in my area are 4-6 weeks out in scheduling to look at anything, so the videos are appreciated because not all of us can wait so long.

Bingo! 1995 C2500 pickup we bought used in 2009 with wedding gift money...I was adjusting ATF level yesterday after hubby overfilled it and after third round of change level/cycle through the gears/recheck level, the shift lever went floppy and stopped changing the gears. Today the tow truck driver went underneath to manually shift the truck into neutral to put it on the flat bed, and as I had watched about 2/3 of this video, I asked him while he was under there to see if that was the end of the cable that had failed. Sure enough, it was -- and he said there had been a zip tie on it previously, which was now broken! I had him take a picture of it with my cell phone, and it looks just like you've shown here. We think that actually shifting into first and second (repeatedly), even gently, was what did it. Prior to that, 12+ years of P-R-N-D relying on the zip-tie. I'm not up for removing the bench seat, and I'd rather fix it right than just replace the zip tie, so I'm letting the dealership take care of this.

EXCELLENT VIDEO!! VERY thorough and well paced. Probably the most critical portion is the adjustment of the cable at the end. There are very few videos that cover that at all here so thank you for including that. I have almost exactly this same truck, a 1999 Suburban K2500 but in blue. The cable was never properly adjusted therefore first and second could not be reached by the shift cable. I do think my bushing has some slop as well but I will start with an adjustment and go from there. Thank you!

Outstanding! (and great timing). I had to have my trans rebuilt. I had the cable replaced at the same time all from an Independent, not GM. My truck has two problems since this was done: 1.) It is very stiff when shifting from Park down to any position and the same going back up to park. This is a huge problem when driving in the mountains when I take it down to "3" to avoid the trans cycling in and out of Overdrive while towing. The problem is that I have to take my eyes off the road and look down at the shift position and very carefully shift Up to Overdrive, as I am fearful of going past that position and to neutral, or worse, reverse. It is that stiff. 2.) The second problem is it will not shift all the way down (with the shift lever) to "1". It just stops at "2". I have a high level of confidence the cable was not adjusted as you have shown by the Factory Procedure. Do you have any ideas on the first problem I am having???.
@DrShock
@DrShock 3 года назад
Could be both actually. Even the aftermarket cables should have the adjustment tabs replicated to perform the procedure. I believe this is a common mistake nowadays, where shops are not familiar with these older trucks and their service procedure details anymore.

Great video. My '95 GMC 1500 decided that I was not going to be leaving work today. I got in and went to put it into gear and the lever just flopped. Luckily I was able to crawl under and twist the cable around and get a little more of a friction fit. That worked well enough to get me home. I was hoping I could just buy a new bushing, but like you said there aren't any. Other than the one you linked. I think the cable is original, so it lasted 259k miles. I just have a bench seat in my truck so I'm not looking forward to replacing the entire thing. I have cable ties holding things together for now until I'm able to fix it.

Check that you have the cable aligned properly at both ends, and locked into position. If you can't downshift to 2 or 1, this sounds like either an incorrect cable for the vehicle model, or a misalignment.

I changed my cable before watching this. I came here about the item that goes on the ball on the other side of the ball for the shift cable. Long story I had the other end of it disconnected to replace the Theft Deterrent Module. Watching this 2 things I found not mentioned. 1st @ 24:50 where you talk about what you call a "clip" is actually a sliding "lock". You show one side of it. The lock has ANOTHER tab on the other side. You have to lift/release BOTH "tabs" to unlock the sliding lock. The 2nd is @ 30:00 where you are putting the cable in it's holder. The hole has an open side to slide the cable in, AND the other side of the hole has square cutout. You put the cable on twisted 90° so that the cable's spring tabs orient to the sides-one tab in the open end and the other in the square cut-out, pull the cable through, then twist it back 90°. I learned changing mine. Also, on my '98 dually, you do not have to remove the seat (no airbags on it).

@DrShock
@DrShock Год назад
When you say _"die cast shifter"_ are you referring to the shift lever that is part of the transmission? If so, this lever only mounts on one way, and it will correspond 1:1 in position to each gear P, R, N, D, etc.

Ah, ok. So no adjustment in reinstalling the shifter itself, but you want to get it into the matching positions at all three points. Start with "P"ark. Shifter in "P", transmission shift lever in park position, and then connect both ends of the shifter cable. One at the column (with no adjustment) and one at the transmission shift lever as I show. This latter one having the adjustment procedure I showed. Test and then lock it in with the small clip made into the cable as I show.

I don't understand why in the world they put such complicated connectors on this ! I mean a cotter pin or a e-clip would have been simpler, held better and been so much easier to replace if it did break or wear out. Same silly type bushing on my shift brake interlock has worn out and it fell off. Noticed it when I was replacing the ignition switch module . I had wondered a while back when I was able to shift out of park without my foot on the brake! Fixed mine on the transmission end by drilling out and removing the pin, then putting in a 1/4-20 bolt and nut with nylon lock! On the steering column side, a bushing that holds the foot on brake before you can shift out of park rod, wasn't holding that rod on so I just put a zip tie around it and the shift rod to keep them on their pins.

Hi DrShock, you seem know well cars inside out. My car had shown "Input/Shaft Speed Sensor No Signal" error and was recently fixed. The professional was not speaking English well and all I understood is that the input/shaft gear had to be adjusted to always send the signal to the "Input/Shaft Speed Sensor". I wonder could what you explained in the video (although the car model/year might be different) be what he actually did to solve the problem. I would appreciate if you can point me in the right direction.

Need a little more clarity as to what exactly broke. The bushing end of the shifter cable, or the steel ball it attaches onto at the column end? If the latter, the easiest repair would be a trip to the local LKQ and pull the rod assembly.

Thank you for the video! I replaced mine and it wouldn’t shift lower than third, so I watched the end of your video and saw the adjustment part I had not bothered to watch! I’ve done the cable adjustment exercise five or six times (10-15 cycles) and I still can’t get it down to first… any suggestions? Thanks again.
@DrShock
@DrShock Год назад
Presuming the transmission lever itself is in the correct _detent_ for Park before you start the adjustment, and that the cable is a genuine GM OEM one (some aftermarket ones just do not have good fitment), then I would make sure you have gotten the correct cable part number for your year and type of truck. These do vary across years. I could also suggest to recheck the steering column end of the assembly for both proper cable bushing seating, and the mechanism to the actual range selector lever being correctly aligned.
@brainwashingdetergent4322

So your video on shift cable was very helpful..I'm having a problem doing the adjustment.. it goes to all gears but won't go back into park..I'm having to push the shift lever to help put the shifter into park.. can you help?
@DrShock
@DrShock Год назад
Thanks. So first I would disconnect the shift cable and determine if the range selector lever (this is the arm with the stud attached to the transmission) smoothly cycles thru all transmission gear positions. This test is to determine whether the binding is in the cable or the transmission itself. Each transmission selection on with the range selector arm will have a solid _detent_ tactile feel so that you know you are there. Just count from Park thru 1st and back. If that all works smoothly, then the problem is in the shift cable. Either the cable is mis adjusted, or internally damaged or the bushing at either end of the cable is damaged and not holding onto the attachment point securely. For this test you will need a helper, and want to observe both ends of the cable (fully connected as normal) cycle thru each gear shift position. You're watching for the stud coming loose from the nylon type bushing at the cable end(s). At some point you're going to be able to determine if the bushing at the cable end is shot and introducing play that prevents the shift, or you're going to see that the cable is internally damaged or out of adjustment.
@Fullbloodedxpert
@Fullbloodedxpert Год назад
I have to change this out but I can get my shift lever back into park! Can I do this while it’s in neutral??
@DrShock
@DrShock Год назад
It's recommended to perform the repair with the transmission and shift lever both in the park position. You could move the transmission range selector lever manually into park, from below the vehicle, like I show in the testing part of the video. Technically, one could do it from the neutral position too if you had previous experience with this repair procedure. but it can be more difficult to ascertain that the transmission is in fact in that position. It's important because if it's out of position, the vehicle will not start due to the protection of the neutral safety switch mounted onto the side of the transmission which is keyed to the neutral position.

I know this is a older video, my 97 chevy dually would never go into first but i can go under the truck and select it with my hand, but inside the cab with the shift lever would only go to 2nd, So i tried the adjustment P-1st 10 times NO GO stopped at 2nd gear so i figured cable was worn out/stretched or so the bushings were good, bought a new cable still doing the same thing won't go past 2nd, at this point i'm stumped.
@DrShock
@DrShock 2 месяца назад
Some things to check. Is the transmission actuator arm installed on backwards? Is this the correct model/era transmission for this truck or has someone installed a later model/design? When you performed the cable adjustment, did you unlock the white nylon clip first and then relock it?

Just curious, if the cable came off due to worn teflon, can I just replaced the small bolt and replace with a bolt and nut? I mean it would hold the shifter cable to the linkage firmly. Would that work instead of installing a new shifter cable? Thanks
@DrShock
@DrShock Год назад
The nylon material in the bushing holds onto a metal ball stud. It has to rotate as the stud is attached to the shift lever which is angled. You would be better off trying one of the bushing replacement kits in the video description than a jerry rig.

Now got a question my old cable didn't have the clip under the transmission where u used a flat head to put the clip back in would it be okay if I still don't have a clip in the new cable? Btw you helped out a weekend headache trying to figure out what the hell did I go wrong
@DrShock
@DrShock Год назад
I think you're referring to the metal "U" retainer that secures the cable at the 1:29 time index? If so that clip is needed to prevent the cable from moving out of position in the mounting bracket, which if it did it could cause it come off of at the transmission range select lever end. You'll need to replace that, there's a link with the GM part number for the U clip in the video description.

So my 1998 K2500 is having a problem where it shifts through all the gears perfectly fine but when I go to put it into park from reverse, the light stays on reverse on the dash and the truck will want to roll backwards. If you get under the truck and flip that lever, the truck will then fall into park and the light will also show park. I tried adjusting that cable because I thought it might have slack in it but it didn't do anything. Do you think that I need to replace this cable entirely? I am dreading it if I have to because I have a bench seat lol
@DrShock
@DrShock Год назад
It sounds like you're saying if you manually actuate the gear selection lever on the transmission itself, behavior is as expected. But if you action it via the gearshift lever on the steering column itself, there is failure to move from R to P correctly. If so this is a classic symptom of a problem with the shift cable, either the bushing at one or both ends has failed, or the cable itself internally, or both. You could visually observe this at the transmission end by having a helper work the gears as I showed in the testing portion of this video. Though it can also be a problem with the bushing at the other end of the cable, connecting on the steering column side.

My 2001 Chevy Silverado LT will not go into park.ive replaced the colum shift lever with the orange wire attached. I've replaced the solenoid switch. And I'm about to change the steering column shift mechanism. If that doesn't fix the problem.any ideas what it could be? Right now I have to start my truck in neutral and shut it off in neutral set the parking brake then shift it into reverse to get the key out of the ignition.any help would be greatly appreciated

It can get expensive throwing parts at a problem. I like to diagnose what specifically is causing the symptoms, before replacing that particular part only. Given what you've described, I would start with the shift cable like this video describes (tho your 2001 is a newer quite different design than shown here). I would make sure I can manually move the transmission shift lever into park, to confirm it's not a problem with the transmission itself (be sure to note and return the lever to the position you started with!). I would next check that the shift cable is not out of adjustment and both end bushings are securely attached, and performing the full range of travel necessary to cycle thru all of the gear positions (this is often the root cause for the symptom you describe). If the transmission will shift into the park position manually, then the problem is related to the shift cable not being able to travel far enough to reach that position.

The gear selector on our 98 K1500 moves freely and won't engage any gear and the notch on the gear indicator never moves. The linkage underneath is still securely attached to the transmission and I can move the arm on the transmission to change gears which in turn causes the notch on the gear indicator to move also. I was wondering if it is possible that the cable would be broke somewhere along the way inside the sleeve? Or should I look at a different component?
@DrShock
@DrShock Год назад
The cable can break inside the sheath, but the bushing at the steering column end is more likely, I would check there first. Regardless the cable would need to be replaced.

Hello is there a way to remove the white plastic locking clip it’s busting my tail mines frozen in the black plastics bracket that attached to the shift arm of the transmission
@DrShock
@DrShock 2 года назад
If it's stuck and not unlocking, I would suggest some silicone spray to free it up. But removing it would most likely break the part.

Great Video. Any idea why a 95 Chevy k1500 shifts smooth into D, but when shifted into reverse, has a pause then feels like it slams into gear?
@DrShock
@DrShock Год назад
That's a form of _delayed engagement_ which could stem from a number of causes internal to the automatic transmission itself. If it's the original transmission still on that 1995, long overdue for a rebuild.

Tip, if you cannot shift into Drive 2 or Drive 3 manually from the steering column , the cable is stretched and you're on borrowed time...

All causes of _delayed engagement_ are going to be inside the transmission. Based on what you've described, that's what I would suspect you have going on. Delayed engagement can be as simple as dirty ATF, or as bad as the reverse drum or band being worn out (and everything in between including just a bad seal). About all you can address without pulling it out is an ATF and filter change. You can sometimes get some more life out (for a delayed engagement to reverse ONLY) by replacing the reverse servo pin with a longer one. This can be done without removing the transmission from the engine, but will require removing the valve body to gain access.

Hey, what is the other arm that is attached right next to the cable. That little arm that connects to the same lever.
@DrShock
@DrShock 2 года назад
If you give me a time index in the video I can be more sure that I understand what you're asking about, but I'm going to presume you mean the shift lever arm. This is part of the automatic transmission, and is what actuates the gear you have selected then the cable pushes/pulls it into a particular position.

How do I know if my cable snapped or if there's something else going on. When I took the panel off the knee bolster the shifter linkage goes side the side not back-and-forth
@DrShock
@DrShock 2 года назад
You mention side to side motion, has the bushing popped off the stud? It's a common failure with the plastic/nylon material of the bushing.

my transmission goes into park and shifter goes into park but my dash doesnt register its in park...cant find video on how to fix. any tips?
@DrShock
@DrShock 2 года назад
Since the trans goes into park I wouldn't suspect the shift cable. On these OBS model years this video covers, the neutral safety switch also doubles as a gear position sensor to the instrument cluster. I would check out that device. It's either out of alignment (special tool required to adjust), or faulty.

@DrShock
@DrShock 2 года назад
A 2001 with the newer body design may have a different cable routing, and may take a different part number. But it's the same type of setup. It could be the bushing at either end, or both of them over so many years.

@@DrShock ok. I will have to take a look at it. For about a month the gear shift column kinda developed a rubbery feel. And it felt like i had to dropped it further down than normal to get it to go in drive.
