In 1993 sainz couldn't stay with toyota because off sponsorship clashing sainz had repsol while toyota didn't want repsol going forward wanting marlboro & castrol. In 1996 sainz wasn't going stay with subaru after the events off spain in 1995 when going forward colin mcrae was going be there #1 driver.

The Escort cosworth was a old rally car when Carlos joined. Apparently it took some persuading from Ford to get him to join in 96.

It was another surprising move by Carlos, and history repeating itself as it did in '93 when he and the Repsol team went for the aged Lancia Delta Integrale. Both '93 and '96 decisions were bizarre because it was immediately obvious that winning another championship for either driver or manufacturer was very unlikely.
