So my favorite car has been having some issues. A few weeks ago, while driving home, out of nowhere it lost power. It wouldn't accelerate normally and it was slamming into gears. Today we attempt to fix.
I’m having the same problem when my w140’s VEtec kicks in. A one point I was doing 10 second quarter miles now it’s a 11 sec car. Thanks for your vids Pete very informative!
Hey guys, all of you who are having these issues should go to the next mercedes benz dealership or to another repair station with the star diagnosis system. Luckily, the W140 is the first car with the can bus system so that you can read out the fault codes very easily and you can even check the values of the single components like MAF, EGR and other sensors for faults! In the system, you can see all the "normal values" for these components, for example MAF from -4.5V ... 4.5V so if the value is outside of this range, you know that your MAF is faulty! Please guys don't waste your money by replacing parts without knowing if they cause the problem or not. Wish you all the best in clearing this incident! Cheers from Germany!
Yes star system can be amazing. I plan to buy one. In this case it didn't cost me anything and I get a joy out of solving problems , but man I would love to get the program. Out here it's about $225 to them to run it so it can be a waste of money
Mine, 1992 S430 and my 1997 S430 have the same motor, but I am wondering if the 92 has the same diagnostic capabilities, it seems like it does not have an OBD 2 port
Pete, the hose you are grabbing at 6:31 goes to both the EGR and the intake vacuum port next to the EGR. There should be two separate vacuum lines. I went out to my car and took some photos of my engine if you want me to email them to you. Might help explain better than words. As another commenter pointed out, clean the maf because might as well. Won't hurt to have a clean maf. The transmission shifts are also partly controlled by engine vacuum. You will find another vacuum line going to the transmission modulator on the left side of the transmission so its funky shifts could all be caused by these two missing lines.
Wow you just got me thinking. I actually found a y shaped vacuum hose broken in engine bay. I bet that went down to the hose i showed and up to egr and manifold. And i have had to fix the vacuum line on transmission for my r129 but that engine ran fine when it was ruff shifting. I think this one is being caused by other vacuum leaks. Also thank you so much for this Email is peterdavidson77@gmail.com If you can send any photos of engine bay that would be a huge help
@jackson goodwin i cant thank you enough. Those photos helped so much. Unfortunately issue is still there but I was able to almost narrow it down to clogged cats or fuel pressure regulator. I checked my throttle body and it's from 2004 so it's been changed.
So I have my 1995 Mercedes S500 with 75k miles the only problem I had that idles like that was when the fuel pump and fuel filter needed to be changed and of course I had to spend alot on parts to make my w140 extremely reliable I replaced the top engine wiring harness to updated wiring, cleaned mass air flow sensor, replaced ignition coils, spark plugs, new spark plug wires, new crank shaft sensor replaced old cracked vacuum hoses from secondary air pump and hoses to the EGR valve, clean high octane petrol nothing restricting the engine from getting the air it needs replaced MAP sensor and I also clean later on replaced my EGR valve with new gasket my w140 runs very strong and idles very smooth never gives me any problems I advise to check all of those I have mentioned.
I hade the same problem for a long time. Sent it to fix several times with no luck until one guy clean the Rotor and it's run like a charm since. Hope this will help.
I have two of these, Not sure if this has been mentioned, I have not read the comments, but I would look at things like clogged, catalytic converter, mass, airflow sensor, and check your transmission fluid level. I’m leaning towards the catalytic converter, it will kill the power, especially when it’s warmed up.
Pete, if you remove the throttle body and looked in the hole you will see a tube hanging down. I believe that runs to egr and I seen it removed and it was nearly clogged shut. If this helps I could really use your help with my s500!
My 96' S500 has done that twice before with me. It would run smooth, but the acceleration was limited and it was as if it was in a limp mode. In both cases, simply cleaning the MAF restored performance. BTW-what is up with the mess of a screen in your intake?
The clog was right at the bottom of the tube so removal isn't necessary if you can remove the throttle body put your hand down in the and use something to remove the guck from the end of that egr tube.
If the idle is fine it's probably limp mode triggered by bad wiring: degradation of harness, if it's been replaced, then probably the electronic throttle body wiring (also effected by the biodegradable wiring common to the harness). I think these would trigger the traction control error light (the square, not the triangle in the middle of the cluster).
May be as simple as you first identified- vacum leak reconnect vacum lines If unsure of pairing Have 2, or more, short lenghts of blocked off (with a bolt or screw) hose & attatch to each fitment point or block off every hose until engine runs smoothly & clean mafs sensor
Awesome thank you. I'm going to spend time tomorrow messing with vacuum. I think i forgot to mention but I did clean the maf a few times and it helped the idle a little.
Yes victor is amazing and I've learned a lot from him. I've talked to him in past but with something like this unfortunately I'm just going to have to go through every item that could cause it. I wish he was close and I would bring it to him. Thanks for the fill in. More people need to know about victor
Thank you so much for input and help. I ended up resolving issue. Was very easy fix but almost hidden. The main spark plugs coil wire for the right side bank had some how melted a little and I didn't see it. This caused a short in wire and half of engine to go down. Easy and cheap fix and she is back on road. Well at least back running. Right now I'm doing a series on front suspension
@@petescarport Wow, I'm glad to hear that you fixed this issue. I am now trying to fix my S600. I bought it for 3000$ but the engine and wiring harness has issues, but I think i will manage to repair it.
Thanks. You would have been right. It was the coil wire melted to motor. I somehow didn't see it and then went to swap out plugs, caps and rotor and saw it.
you should google " mercedes electronic parts catolouge"" EPC" it has the diagram for the whole vacuum system make sure it it is for m119 970 not 980 as that is different. also once you do that you can check what is in place and what is not, forget the spark plugs you are just wasting time with those. i just hope it isnt your throttle body wiring but i would check all the vacuum lines first btw there is a lot
Lol. Yes plugs will be gone immediately. On the 95 they didn't have coil packs but yes I do need to check every other source of spark as well. I still feel it may be clogged cats or just vacuum
Hey buddy I need some help I just recently picked up a 1996 S320 and I need to know if I have the electronica suspension or regular when I called the dealer they could not answer the question strange yeah I know LOL maybe you can help
A 96 would have hydraulic rear suspension. Now it could have been changed out to non hydraulic and I don’t think it was an option to get the car without it but I could be wrong on this. Should be easy to tell. You will have a reservoir up front to fill fluid and also if you can get under car you should see a level sensor and lines going to the shocks.
i got a similar problem, when i go half gas the car does not do anything but when i floor it it rolls and goes but not on half gas. and the asr light is on for me. can anyone help me explain how to do?
Man you guys rock. I think it may be just the vacuum and if i can get it all sorted might fix all issues. My email is peterdavidson77@gmail.com if you can send any photos
@@johnsidor7744 oh that's great news. Sorry I've been so busy I haven't had time to reach out to friend. I can connect you two and maybe he has what you need or maybe I do. I have a lot of parts off my old 95 s500
this is vacuum leak,or wire harness or limp mode maybe you should send a message to viktor at restore your mercedes.com vsandv on utube ask him to watch your video,he is the best in the business
