i bought my ST185 in 2016. I really wasn't a fan of celicas at the time and did not know much about them, but the car was only 3000$ CAD and had 115000km so i knew it was a good deal. now looking back i am super happy that i got it. almost impossible to find ST185 in North America for less than 15000$ unfortunately the previous owner did lots of mods that hurt the value, metal flake paint job which was done very poorly, body kit from the early 2000's that looks "rice" and was hiding some body damage to the right rear quarter. dash was cut up and had gauges installed and whatever he used to cover the dash is now bubbling and cracking off. homemade FMIC piping was welded terribly and had lots of boost leaks/very rough welds obstructing flow. lots of little issue but my plan now is to try and convert the car to a CS style 185

The GT-Four ST205 has always been underrated/undervalued compared to the likes of the Impreza/Evo of the time as they performed badly in the championship when they weren't cheating and when they were they got caught and banned, so the cars have always lacked the pedigree/status of the others in the market, which is a real shame as they're fantastic cars.

@@kotarojujo2737 I'm in the US, so I didn't follow that series and it would have been difficult to do so back then (it was hard enough to follow rally), but the race car bore little resemblance to the road car-they didn't even use the Supra's engine. As a road car, I'm old enough to remember when they came out and they consistently rated low in shootouts with their contemporaries, the 300ZX TT, RX7 turbo, 3000GT VR4, and C4 Corvette (the Mitsubishi was always last and that was before all the reliability issues were known).

6th gen Celicas (or really Celicas in general) are some of the best entry level sports cars imo, even today. I bought a 1999 GT a couple years ago, and I have loved nearly every second of driving it. The car nearly always does exactly what you want it to do, and it almost feels like it's telling you when you're about to mess up while driving it hard. Sadly the US got stuck with the 2.2l 5S-FE in the GT trim of the car, and didn't get a more powerful engine until the 7th gen GT-S with the ZZE engine. But, with that being said, for an entry level sporty-ish enthusiast car that can be driven daily with no issue, you really can't go wrong. Plus, you can still scare the crap out of your passengers, even with the gutless 5S-FE.

This was a great Group A rally-car as well (for all those unfamiliar with rallying: Gr. A used to be the top-spec homologation formula whereby the cars would feature a lot of components derived from the production car, but heavily modified or reconstructed), however... there was also quite a scandal related to this, the ST205, model. When Germany-based Toyota Team Europe -- i.e. the Toyota WRC team -- introduced it in late 1995, it was soon discovered by the stewards that the cars featured an illegal exploit in the engine. The sporting regulations in WRC use inlet restriction as a means of keeping the peak output of turbocharged engines under control. Without the restrictor, these engines, in rally tune, could easily reach up to 600 or even 700 bhp, and after the accidents of the Group B rallycars of the mid 1980's, FIA decided that these sorts of outputs were way too dangerous for rallying. The restrictor would simply be a little piece of tubing, with the internal diameter precisely measured and corresponding to the regulation maximum, basically something like a ring, placed right next to the inlet of the turbo, mounted in a way that allowed for easy inspection by the stewards. The TTE engineers came up with a cheat solution whereby the turbo could take additional air beside that which came through the inlet tubing and the restrictor. Once this exploit was discovered, Toyota was banned from WRC for entire 2 years, which meant that these Celicas didn't really get to compete in world rallying. (Toyota returned to WRC in 1998 with a car built in accordance with the new "World Rally Car" formula and based on the Corolla.) However, thoughout the late 90's and early 00's, the ST205 Gr. A rally car enjoyed much success in national and regional rallying in Europe -- of course, after that cheaty restrictor override was done away with.

For anyone who wants to build one of these in the USA, find a gen 1 Rav4, lower it, and swap in the 3SGTE, the Mounts are the same, the MT version has the same transmission, the AWD system is the same, the Axles aren't but, they are interchangeable, even the harness is plug and play, everything from the GT4 is interchangeable with the Gen 1 rav.. Enjoy!

These cars are so so cool. You should review a SAAB from the 90s please. They have some heritage in rally too, not as much as Toyota, Mitsubishi, Subaru, etc. They're awesome though! If you could find a 9000 Aero or a 1999 (specifically) 9-3 SE that would be sweet.
