Thanks for doing this video .... my control lever just exploded while shifting, the cable end lost in the mix. Luckily was close to home just coasted down a hill into my driveway. This video made me confodent i could fix everything, ordered new cotrol lever assembly on e bay, and ordered a new cable ---- Thanks for your help -- Tim -- Lake Hiawatha NJ
You're right about the lack of videos and your video is very helpful. Thank you very much! (Especially cause no shops want to work on 20+ year old stuff)
Wish u wouldv shown how to disassemble from the handle part in more detail... Ugh....im afraid of my bike. I think it stays awake at night plotting how it can ruin my day.
Lol, sorry bud. But I can tell you that bike aren't monsters. You can take them apart and put them back together and keep riding like nothing happened. The hand control is pretty straightforward. It takes a little fiddling getting it back together, but anyone can handle it. It's only one bolt to worry about (at the bars) and a bit of playing with the tension; just set it to where your own muscle memory thinks it should be. If you need any help, just let me know.
@@zeroreality i might have to change tge clutch plates. Been watching vids. Looks simple enough if you work carefully and methodically. But i just know Satan and the excorcist girl live in my bike somewhere. Btw its an '85 1000xv virago.
Pretty sure my clutch cable half snapped bc it lost tension on the ride home from work today. I suspect rust ate through some strands, I haven't had a chance to look yet.. had to adjust it as far out as I could to keep going.. thanks for the how-to. I'm sure it'll help.
Thank you, kind sir. I just broke my throttle cable and couldn't find a good video on it. Your video gave me a hope I could tackle this (and inspired me to photo-document my repair). I wish I had a go-pro or whatever you're using to record this. ... What did you use? That actually makes for a much better how-to than my written attempt. Oh wait - are you managing all that single-handed? You rock!
Throttle cable is easier too (had to replace one on the old Virago). It's two cables actually. Take off the air box, loosen a couple bolts, slip out the old, and slip in the new. Should take 15 if you're slow. Adjust idling RPM with the "dial" just behind the front cable. Got a GoPro as a door prize, works well, but you can find cheaper on Amazon with the same quality.
Or 2 weeks ... if you have to wait for parts, and then put the wrong one in first and spend a couple days contemplating that until you check your initial picture and realize what you've done ;-) Hardest part was wrangling the air filter hose back on. Thanks for the confidence boost.
I got mine at the local Yamaha dealer because I was young and stupid. You can get one from eBay or Kijiji, or maybe FortNine. The MotionPro cables are aftermarket and just as good. fortnine.ca/en/motion-pro-black-vinyl-clutch-cable-05-0163
Sorry I didn't get a part number; just went to the closest Yamaha dealer and grabbed the part. Clutch cables are simple components though, so just grab a good/cheap one from wherever. MotionPro makes one for the Virago and it will work just as well as the OEM.
