Thanks man, I replaced my passenger side valve cover gasket and it stills leaks really bad and I was like "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON" I didnt know about the cam caps or the half-moon inserts. Ill have to take it off and re-do those areas. Thanks to your video I now know exactly what to do. Your a life-saver
What! There is more! What did he say! 1/4 inch drive! No, he did! Use quarter inch drive, knock out harden spark plug tube seals! Sir! Again!!genius! This is 9:30 + in video! In less than a minute of video! This guy has shown two moves! Two moves, that a mechanic could only dream of having, during sex with their wife!
I just did the suspension on my 4runner and need to do wat is in this video and i have been putting it off for some reason lol I'm glad your video popped up on my you tube feed I'll let you know how it turns out and thanks for sharing
Nice tutorial, right around 16:20 into the video when you were replacing the cam caps what oil whole are you talking about? I'm getting ready to tackle this project on my 4runner and want to be sure before I start. I don't want to mess anything up, since my engine just rolled 270k
Gerardo Sanchez if you use a small mirror once you get that rubber cam cap Out, right near the bottom on the back of the head you will see a small hole. That hole supplies oil to the back end of the camshaft. Inexperienced mechanics have used way too much RTV silicone when replacing those caps and will plug that oil hole which will result in burning out the back of camshaft. Basically just use a very light thin coat of black RTV silicone maximum oil resistant on the edges of new caps, no globs!!. If you have any other questions feel free to ask, I also did the whole water pump, timing belt, idler, tensioner, etc... But lost the footage.. that's a doozy as well! Colby
Thanks for the video brother. Has helped a lot. Do you recall where you got that valve cover gasket set? Mine didn't come with cam seals, caps and the cover bushings for the bolts. And of course nobody in town has the seals and caps in stock. I'm worried I'm going to skip the seals/caps and still have a leak. Then have to do it all over again
Hey, thank you for the instructional video. After watching it through, I realize I’m better off finding a professional. I got quoted at $300 for a job like this, do you think this is a fair price or should I go search out another shop?
right. I am about to do this on my 97' 4runner. Will definitely be keeping this tab open, so thanks for a well made video. It will damn sure take more than four hours.
I’m tackling this job in a few weeks. I’ve always figured if oil can leak out between mating surfaces, it will. If there’s no gasket, it gets something to seal it. The trick is not putting too much it beams off inside and blocks an oil passage.
Quick question. When you say "clean surface areas" 12.38 mark. w brake cleaner. What exactly are the "surface areas" you're talking about? I'm about to tackle this project myself. Have an 01 Tacoma with 265k mi. on it. Been leaking for a while so I know my engine going to be a bit dirty. So I want to clean as best as I can but don't want to start spraying brake cleaner on shit that's not supposed to be sprayed. Dig the reggae in the background.
Dustin Pawelczak I honestly can’t remember but if you can get it off without, go for it. However I never recommend doing just one side like that. If the pax side is leaking , the driver side will soon start leaking too
Just did exact same shit.. moving on to the valve cover part.. long friggn job if aint done it before.. and that hydraulic tensioner.. fuck that thing.. puts a damn bolt back behind everything.. had me working at it for an hour and a half for that one bolt.
I got the same kit you did. Do you have an oil cooler to stick that tube coming out of your water pump into? I dont really know what to do with it since the original didn't have one and the alternater sits right next to it. 1996 Toyota T100 3.4L
Julio Cesar Magallon anything water pump related shouldn’t have oil in it however if there is an extra tube coming off water pump you could always Just put a rubber cap on it
@@ecanixgarage1106 definitly shouldnt be oil in the pump but my chilton manual said that tube sticking out the side is for a "oil cooler". You dont see the pump in the vid but i have that exact kit and your pump mostly likely has that tube as well.
If your valve cover gasket seal is leaking (this is common), try tightening up the bolts - especially the ones on the side that's sloped downwards. The seal is made of neoprene.
Joyce Mcgowan Thanks for watching, just basic tools a decent mechanic would have. If you are inexperienced dropping a nut or screw inside motor could be catastrophic. 4-6 hours if a decent mechanic took his time. Colby Dean
Rodolfo Piedra shouldn’t be much. If I’m not mistaken the knock sensor is on the block near the lower end so shouldn’t be to hard to change regardless of doing other repairs.
@@ecanixgarage1106 Well, they shop wanted an extra $700 to replace both sensors. $210 each sensor plus 3 hours of work they said. I said no thanks. I might just take a few hours and do it myself.
Rodolfo Piedra, that’s crazy money. I checked and noticed the sensors are under the intake however they are nowhere near that expensive. Why are you trying to change them anyways? Are they throwing a code?
Rodolfo Piedra I could be wrong but I don’t think the knock sensors are related to your studder. Any other codes showing? Have you checked the ten thousand vacuum lines on that motor?
MegaWwefannumber1 truck was old and not very well taken care of, also they lived on the beach real close to water so salt air did not do it any favors 👍🏽
Justin Reeves unfortunately I don’t, I made that video some time ago. You will have to do the pause and play method unfortunately. Don’t forget about the half moon seals.. they can prob be reused just make sure you clean them real well with brake cleaner and then put a heavy coat of black RTV on them. Just take your time and you’ll be fine. I didn’t even use a manual I don’t think for the valve cover gasket‘s, if you’re uncomfortable doing it just put all the bolts back in the holes that you took them out of as you’re working. I know it takes a lot longer but then you know you put everything back together correctly. Good luck
i love this video! Quick question, when you unhooked the fuel line on the driver side to gain clearance for putting the valve cover back on, did fuel spray everywhere. Some info I'm getting says fuel will spray everywhere because it's fuel injected and under pressure. Minute 17:25 in the video. Thanks!
Yes so just wrap a rag around the fitting when you release it and it should catch it no problem… fuel evaporates very quickly so if a little spills you will be ok..
