On my '02 Honda Civic EX w/ 237.5K miles, I replaced my valve cover gasket, my spark plug O-rings, replaced my EGR gasket and the Camshaft Cap... my car was still leaking oil... bad. 10 min drive = 1 quart of oil lost. I followed this exact video, replaced the gaskets on the VTEC Solenoid... boom! No more leak. Thank God.

Just did this yesterday. Took me about an hour or more bc those bolts are in a cramped spot. Word of advice: take the three screws off that hold the solenoid to the head FIRST so you can change the upper gasket out outside of the vehicle. The way he did it makes it a bit harder.

I have been searching for that leak on my son’s civic for a year now. Changed the valve cover gasket, spark plug tube seals, actual valve cover, camshaft seal, crank seal with timing belt, water pump, and was about to change the oil pan gasket. Pulled off the breather assembly and sure enough that’s where it was leaking.

I have an 02 Civic ex and when I try to give it gas like I'm about to jump on the freeway always around 4kRPM it gets stuck and makes this high Rev, low Rev, high Rev, low Rev(I guess you call it spuddering, if I'm saying it right) until I let the has go and slowly push in back. Some places ive seen are saying it's the VTEC oil pressure. Would this help my problem out?

@RustBeltAuto
@RustBeltAuto 4 года назад
@@FreewayKingz yes. With a factory honda unit. That should take care of it. If you wanted to diagnose it, you could energize the solenoid, ohm the oil pressure switch, check to see if the screen is plugged. But all of that is in the unit. The only other thing is wiring issues. The Chinese spool valve assemblies are not very good, so the regular parts store parts are out if the question.

Now, 10 months after this video was posted, my local Honda dealer wants 38 USD for the larger gasket and 11 USD for the smaller gasket, not 15. Autozone, O'reilly and Advance want 28 to 29 USD for the set by Dorman. It's on eBay for 5.99 USD for the set. What's to explain the vast difference between the Dorman parts and those on eBay?
@RustBeltAuto
@RustBeltAuto 5 лет назад
It's just a gasket. Look at the dorman box. If it says made in Japan on the box, it is an O.E.M. rebox. If not, it's some cheaper Chinese part that will probably work just the same. EBay would be fine for that too.

I’ve got an 05 Civic Ex. Code P2646. We flushed the oil and changed the gaskets. Code came back. We then changed the entire solenoid. Cleared code and was fine on an hour long drive somewhere. On our way home the light came back on when we hit a little bit of altitude (maybe 4K feet). The engine seemed to want to stall when it hit 4K rpm. Any guesses as to what our next step is?
@RustBeltAuto

You need to make sure that part you bought is actually good. That is where I would start.
@callummcd3983
@callummcd3983 3 года назад
Pretty sure this is what is wrong with mine. Once in a while if I go over 4k revs the engine light comes on and it goes into limp home mode. Used an OBDII scanner and threw me a code relating to oil solenoids. Took it to my local garage for its MOT and told them about it, they came back and said that's not the problem, it's cos it didn't have any oil in it (or not much in any case), no shit sherlock. I'd imagine it's cos I need to replace either the gaskets or the whole unit. It's a 2001 VTEC, other than that I don't know much about cars. They even said cars this old tend to burn oil quicker but somehow I don't think they knew :/
@SWSSProductions
@SWSSProductions 3 года назад
Mine does the limp shit at 4k rpm as well. Had this oil leak for a while it leaks almost all the oil out in just 1 or 2 drives to work. Found oil dripping out of this vtec solenoid so I'm hoping replacing the gaskets on it will fix it. Let me know how your repairs go. Cheers

@BarnStangz
@BarnStangz 5 лет назад
SuperM1687 the solenoid controls oil pressure so that the engine can change cam profiles. Google search it, or RU-vid search, there are LOTS of examples on how it works. It's pretty damn cool. The engine in my Yota has variable valve control on the intake and exhaust. It's crazy how much tech is in a engine these days.
@RustBeltAuto
@RustBeltAuto 5 лет назад
@BarnStangz DAMMIT MAN!!! Enough with the technical jargon. I'm trying to start a comedy/reality show here. :P. Vtec has a separate rocker arm, and camshaft lobe. When you hit a desired RPM, like about 5k, the solenoid activates, pushing down a spool valve that opens up an oil galley, sending oil pressure into pins that lock the normally used rocker arm into a different rocker arm, so it can utilize a different camshaft lobe that has a higher lift, duration, and higher lobe separation for more performance at higher RPM's

I could not find the gaskets so I called my local Honda dealer. The dealer told me 15825-P2M-005 fits my car and they stock them ($27.00). He told me Honda does not sell the other gasket, you have to buy the entire assembly ($500 and some change). He said someone else does make an after market gasket, but didn't have the name.... that was nice of him. I will check autozone.
