I had a friend in college who had a rich grandma. She bought him a 98 Cobra when he graduated HS. We used to tear up the south side of Indianapolis in that thing. Such a fun car.
Not a good move. But, so many have done this. I'm almost tired of hearing them say "wish I hadn't sold it". They wouldn't have, if they were a car nut like me. Cars are just so flavor of the week to most people, unfortunately. Bet that Exploder has been turned to beer and soda cans by now.
I would have disowned my dad! . He would not exist to me if he every traded in a Cobra … but now that we’re older I’m saving up for a cobra I just sold my 1998 GT
I had multiple Fox-bodies but loved my Cobras. I had a 93 in teal green, a 94 in black a 96 and a slightly used 2000. Something about Mustangs always spoke to me. In my adult life I’ve had Vipers, a Grand National, M division cars etc but I’d still have a 93 Cobra any day or decade
I had a black 98 cobra.. it dynoed with a tune at 285rwhp and 275 rwtq.. with fat rear tires 10.5 and some lowing springs, you cant beat the look.. one of fords greatest hoods in my opinion..
YES I WILL GIVE THE 96 98 COBRAS 2 THINGS LOL THE HOOD LOOKED GREAT AND THE 4.6 LOOKED GREAT WITH THE GIANT COBRA ON IT AND WE'LL IN MY OPINION THAT'S WHERE IT ENDED LOL I KNEW SO MANY PEOPLE BACK IN 96 97 WITH REPLACEMENT MOTORS IN THERE COBRAS INCLUDING MY 97 COBRA WITH JUST 2 THOUSAND ORIGINAL MILES AND ONE MISSED SHIFT AND THE MOTOR WAS DONE.THAT VERSION OF THE 4.6 WASN'T KNOWN FOR BEING DURABLE.
These are beautiful cars still all of these years later. If I could find a low mile, completely stock one that hasn't been beat on I might do it. I don't get why people get these and modify so much.
I had the 99 Cobra back in 99. I recently had a 98 Cobra which was better because it had zero wheel hop. I went through alot of halfshafts in my 99 cuz the shitty irs. These 96-98 Cobras run 12s with minimal mods and go for arpund 10k$ these days. Good alternative to a Brz or Frs or S2000
YAH BUT THE BOTTOM END OF THE 96 98 COBRAS WAS NOT A STRONG MOTOR AND THAT'S WHY THE TERMINATORS WERE BORN.A 96 98 COBRA COULDN'T HOLD A STICK TO THE TERMINATORS LOL THAT VERIZON OF THE 4.6 CAN TAKE A LOT 93 BOOST THROWN AT IT.
@@lj5190 I owned a previous gen Mustang at the time, and the current Mustang looks great. But this gen is garbage. Sorry that you find bland and dull to be a positive attribute, but we're not all dullards.
I bought a '96 Mystic new back in the day and still have it. Still turns heads and draws spectators at the car shows. All original except for batteries over the yrs, but replaced with motorcraft to keep it as original as possible. 24,XXX miles on the snake now.
Same here, bought mine in Ft Myers Fl. april 1st 96. All original but for KnN. I don't take it out during love bug season (may---sept). Still gets an annual wash and wax.Just turned 26k.
Back in the day my cousin had a 1998 Mustang GT all black convertible. Slightly lowered with kool factory wheels. I thought it was the coolest car ever. In today's time with all this pandemic bs everyone has become more pessimistic and depressive. The good ol days need to come back so that our kids can enjoy their childhood just like I did growing up.
Fellow SN-95 Fan here. The SN-95 is the mustang I grew up with. Not a day goes by where I don't see one. They're everywhere, they're cheap and they're fun. Anyone who hates em because they're not a Foxbody or an S-197 (Actually I dislike the Foxbodies and love the S-197s) needs to shut up.
Nowadays I feel like the sn95 cobras are pretty rare. The only one I've seen in person is the one I own, and most of the v6, and gt sn95s that you see driving around are ratted out. So it's kinda cool to see a nice one rolling around.
papameme11 you can find that video on RU-vid. It’s a review on a 2002 cobra but for some reason motorweek hasn’t uploaded it, you can still find it if you search "motor week cobra".
This was an incredible value in those days considering 250+hp was considered a powerful car then. The german muscle cars (BMW M3 was in the low $40Ks while the AMG C class was closer to $50K) and the Japanese (base Supra, FWD base 3000GT, and base 300ZX were in the high $30Ks). Of course, the build quality on the Cobra was very poor and they used very cheap materials but this car was made to cruise around with the rumble of a V8 and drag race at lights.
And now we can take this block build the bottom end throw some boost at it and be into the 1k horsepower mark throw some spray in and alot of time practice and money and you end up with a car like the TT minion cobra running sub 8s in a stick shift
@Jacob Tratnyek his point its that there's 24 years difference between engines, and the 4 banger still needs a turbo to do it. the 4.6 4V wasnt necessarily revolutionary per say, but it did lay the groundwork for the 5.0L coyote and Voodoo engines.
This is the engine that should have been in the GT instead although the single overhead cam 4.6 was slow I must say it's a really really reliable engine I've never had any problems with them but it should have been this engine in the GT and the 5.4 in the cobra back in 96
I think this should have been in the gt and the cobra should have got the 5.4 the cobra r had. It would have really put ford at the top of the heap performance wise.
Um who's driving these cars? The sn95 and ls1 z28 motor week was bad. The Camaro driver didnt launch right. Same here. I've seen bone stock cobras (96-98) run 3 tenths faster. Not that they were huge performers. I have a 96 gt and cobra. Let's just say I'm not going out looking for trouble. My GT gets roasted by soccer moms in minivans.. Its ok though. It really is 😉
Compared to the hideous looking Mustang's we have now these look so much better. I hate the way the GT350r looks. The only other one I that really do like however is the 2013 GT500.
Opal Beifong, are you out of your mind?! Do NOT respond until you take 10minus, & go Relook at 16-18 Shelby GT350R..something’s SERIOUSLY wrong with you If HONESTLY don’t like the way they look..you’re are right about the 13-14 Trinity 5.8L Shelby, they look sinister & bad ass
man i remember when this cobra was long awaited. i was so amazed by it, especially the engine design. then later on the gm ls rolled out...damn😢 But a friend of mine slap a KenneBell on that 32valve, changed the game really quick😂
Really debating if I should trade my 90’ Lx 5.0 Hatch for my brothers 96’ Mystic. Both California cars so the paint has definitely seen better days. My fox is aod still 4 lug and for the most part bone stock. Seems like going with the cobra should be the easy choice but the look of the 5.0 is iconic I need help guys
Okay so my relatively new neighbor has a relatively clean all blacked out 2015 Mustang GT it's the badge with no wing and slightly lowered on all black wheels it has the most I don't know mysterious Supercar aesthetic and is a contender for being the sleekest especially since it has a stock body with no protruding ground effects. The 96 is still the most Supra like
I had two friends growing up back in the mid 90's. One's father owned a 1994 Camaro Z28 and the other had a 1994 Mustang GT with both vehicles being red and manuals. Good times. There was a lot of friendly banter between the adults and much more unfriendly my father is faster than yours between the kids. I love both of the body styles and wouldn't mind have one of each.
Love the retro reviews!!!!!!! These were tough times for us mustang fans. Z28's and SS's were faster, and ford always seemed to be a step behind in the HP department
Yep, my best friend had a 1996 Mustang GT convertible. It had the 5 speed and a few bolt one along with a full exhaust. Sounded great and was fun to drive but with 215 stock horsepower we weren’t beating too many people
I had a heavy ass 95 mark viii and it was fast and had the same motor with less hp only 280 and it felt fast.I can only imagine how fast this thing was with more power, less weight, and a manual.Bulletproof motor to that 4.6 was the best v8 ford has ever made besides the new 5.0 coyote
That's a really nice engine. I had a p71 swap in mind before I decided on going with the torque that gets produced lower with the 2v 4.6. Mod motors are capable of some serious power and can handle abuse!
P71? Crown Vic? That is a 2v 4.6. Depends on the engine though. I think they're only safe up to about 450hp before the rods get ready to bend, IIRC. I'll take a Terminator 4v over just about anything though. Those things were bulletproof.
@@AlexLopez-vx3cr I know this is a super old response but you're absolutely correct! Back then I had a P71 that I was torn between upgrading its 2v 4.6 or swapping it for a older 4.6 4v from an older Lincoln. My original comment did a terrible job explaining that, lol.
My dad has a '96 mustang cobra convertible with a supercharger and exhaust kit. It's a blast to ride around in. I think it puts out around 400hp right now but I'm not sure
depends on if its a centri or a PD blower and the tune. the 1.7 and 2.1 kenne bell blowers will put down right around 375-400rwhp due to a lack of intercooler. the centri cars easily put down 400-450rwhp
After watching about 20 of these road test videos, its become apparent to me that the testers ar motor week don't know how to launch a car. Doesn't matter the year, make or model, they post numbers that are averaging 3 or 4 tenths of a second slower than anybody else in the business. Wonder why that is
That's because they smoke the hell out of the tires on every launch it seems. I had this car and it can 13.70's repeatedly stock. Edit: Sorry, it had a K&N. But I don't think that's giving me 3 tenths.
@Robert Hull - What were your stock trap speeds? Because I think that will determine whether @CareerFireman is right, and there's no density altitude correction.
Going to a local car show tomorrow. Love bug season is over in Louisiana,( finally). I did an annual wash and wax. That MYSTIC paint still pops even after 26 years. Stays in the garage covered when not out for an occasional drive.
My mom had a 1996 Cobra, black on black. Chrome 5 spoke bullitt type wheels. Was an awesome car, until someone pulled out in front of her and totalled it. Still got a 9k check from insurance. Held it's value pretty well being 18 years when it was totalled.
Christian Yetto Damn I sold a black on black 96 cobra with chrome 5 spoke cobra r wheels Years ago in 2011 Hope it wasn’t my old car lol And I Home your mom was ok 👍
Bought one of these literally off the showroom floor my senior year of HS, on Novermber 22nd 1995 at Anderson Ford in central Illinois. Next i proceeded to buy every performance part available no matter the cost, meaning lol a rear gear, lowering springs, sway bars, bbk rear upper & lower arms, a short throw shifter, a cat back exhaust sys & a k&n. In final i welded up a 2 1/2" catless H-pipe myself. Booooring! I sold it the fall of 2000, (mint w 3k+ miles on it) as it was a total disappointment. Despite my then having a shit pot full of cash to build it up, & waiting over 4 years for manufactures to produce some hop ups, to the best of my knowledge at that time, there was still dick for performance parts available. Seemed beyond cruel & pathetic given there were still no cams, heads, headers, nor internals (rods ect), after the wait. Just a over priced (+80-100 hp) hack n whack looking embarrassing vortech kit.. Being 22 then & living through the aftermath of a political fraud, meaning the fake gas crunch of the late 70's & its effect on the auto manufactures super lame hp output for nearly 2 decades, seems to me now being old af, mostly broke w old guy responsiblitys, i think back at what was available for my fathers generation (50's & 60's), as well as drool at what's now available for kids these days, accordingly, i say... MOTHER-FUCK-YOU FORD!!! I WAS CHEATED! YOU'S SUM BITCHES! lmao. Naturally of course, seems I picked the wrong time to be born if owning a "hot rod" was of high importance to me. Think I'm gonna cry lmmfao. Anyway, life went on, & so be it. But I'm still pissed off jealous looking at these kid's hp numbers available today lol, as i drive the lame, weak, affordable, 4 banger appropriate for my situation. I wanna be 18 again damnit lol.
With a few changes....forged crank, slightly different intake cam and obviously a different intake manifold. Same B heads, same block and design though.
scott9050 my son had a cobra and his block was messed up so we were gonna just get a Lincoln block and 2 different people 1 being a mechanic at ford told me that the blocks are slightly different. I don't know for sure tho.
I used to open both windows and the sunroof on that MK VIII, shut off the traction control, and brake rev it, so the smoke came in the windows and out the sunroof like a chimney
My first car was (and still is) a black 98 gt 4.6 2v wasn't very fast but damn it sounded good through a set of flowmaster super 44s and my car also looks like a 95-96 cobra as it has a 95 cobra svt r front bumper, side skirts, cowl hood, and svt r rims Theres a video on my channel of an exhaust clip
Yea that 4v only needed 4 camshafts when swapping cams lol ... ls1 oh shit 1 cam woow so cheap and motor is damn near bullet proof the 2v was stt8 junk and the 4v was and is expensive af to repair not to mention the junk ass transmission terrible t45 ... shoulda been its name honestly... ... dont get me wrong love the look of these but shit is trash
JMC RJC yea like weak rear ends, and shit electrical parts ... that ls1 is bulletproof man, just be honest and the t56 was in the termi , viper and many others so the main parts of the f body and corvette are super solid.. and the fbody was under rated also.. not trying to argue this is old man the faxts dont lie dude
1320vids like I said you can't argue the reality that the mustang never left..The fact that they are better than ever now is another point..You can say all day about how great the F body are and you're entitled to ur opinion I'm out
JMC RJC mustang was gargbage af durring the 90s dude str8 terrible , besides the old 5.0.. i have a c5 ls1 not a f body but I've owned several f bodies and my mustangs from same year were junk . Engines, transmissions , handling and even the driving position
JMC RJC and the coyote was only good for str8 line performance cant even compare to a new body camaro & corvette on any road course besides gt350r lol ... the 1le camaros have out handled just about everything other than cars costing much much more... lets just be real. Just read a comparison with 2018 gt vs the 1le and the ss beat it on car and drivers test track by 3 seconds lolol mustang was faster in a str8 line though
Let me tell you, I had a 96 Lincoln MK VIII, what a torque monster, I've owned 5.0 Lincoln MK VII , nothing to that motor, and I own a 455 GM car, that 4.6 was a killer
I bought a 1995 in 2009 for $5k...it was a steal for being a Rio red w/ black cloth cobra with 75k original miles..i drove it for a couple years in the summer and sold it in 2011...I learned something that day..never sell a fun car that's paid off..it was dumb.
Had a Laser Red 1998 Cobra Convertible. Bought it from a kid who didn't take good care of it. I put a lot of elbow grease in it, drove it for two years and sold it for a profit. Was a lot of fun.
I wanted one of these so bad back in the day. the 4.6 was a huge disappointment when comparing them to Chevy or pontiac. so when this came out with 300+ hp that was huge...now, 300hp isn't all that much.
I like how all the GM fans trash talk that there cars are faster and in most cases they are and should be they have a 5.7 liters do are comparing it to a 4.6 liter it's really funny that a 4.6 gets on there nerves the way it does per cubic inch a 4.6 puts out more hp and tq than a gm 5.7 now imagine if ford build a 5.7 gm fans wouldn't touch it not even close
People compare the 4.6 to the 5.7 because thats the competition in the pony car war, its fords fault they put a 4.6 in their mustang they knew the rival was the camaro. And even ford owners complain about the decision if ford made a 5.7 it'd be a disaster
It came down to cost and sales. The Mustang did fine without a bigger engine. The Cobra could hang with the LT1 and LS1. Ford did put the 351 in the 95 Cobra R and the 5.4 in the 2000. The 5.4 made 385 to the wheels while the LS struggled to get 275 to the wheels.
Don't even ask for an automatic...I miss those days. Yeah...I had a snake bit kit in my Firehawk Trans-Am that used to eat these things all day long. Man those were fun times. Hell my, 25th Anniversary Trans-Am and her LT1 used to ball up on these as well.
This should have been the Mustang GT. The whole SVT deal made these cars hard to find and dealers who had them didnt want to negotiate on price or let you test drive them. Meanwhile the local Chevy dealer would throw you the keys to a Z28 for a test drive and sell the Camaro at invoice price.
Goes around those corners much better than the Trans Am and Camaro I saw y'all review a while ago. Those F-bodies were wobbling like the rear suspension was about to give out; this is much better.
dick van niggz Uhh what? If you don’t count the 4V engines and then the terminators, and also the 3V engines. If you mean it took Ford until 2011 for their V6 engine to outperform the old F body then you’d be correct. Idiot
