Maybe I'm just old, but I love the way this car is styled. I'm so sick and tired of seeing literally every single car on the road having super aggressive styling and trying way too hard to look sporty when the majority are powered by a 1 litre 4 banger making barely 100hp, not to mention gimmicky interior features like half an iPad as a center console. I'd be stoked to have a mint condition '95 civic as a daily
True words. Todays car lack edges in their style and look like sci fi movie props on wheels, while the interior is stuffed to the brim with tech noone really needs.
It's not about being old but having standards and taste. I'm 24 and I'm also fed up with every car trying to look agressive and oversized (I'm looking at you, city SUVs...) while all they achieve is looking edgy and hilariously stupid. And not to mention they all look exactly the same. Plus nowadays they prefer turbocharging fartsy little 0.8-1.3L engines to get some usable 70-110hp out of a car with minimum consumption, only to have it fall apart within 100k kilometers only because paying attention to emissions and fuel consumption is trendy nowadays. Also everything is so overcomputerized nowadays, that it's just plain ridiculous. Automatic DRLs, all sorts of traction and launch controls, microcontrollers that tell you via a CAN bus if one of your bulb is blown.... just walk around the damn car and inspect it! These luxuries spoil drivers and teach them to be even more negligent because "the computer will correct them anyway". You have no idea how many times I see people on the highways or on unlit forest roads connecting cities, with no rear lights whatsoever because they rely on the auto DRL function, while oblivious to the fact that it only turns on the front lights on most cars. So yeah, long gone are the days of unique design, simple features and generally reliable cars. They all became generic boxes where the competition no longer lies in "who can make the most unique car" but "who can rip off the other brand the best"
I actually daily *exactly* one of those models shown in the ad, and it is f-ing awesome. No rust, mind you. Swapped the engine for a 1.6l with VTEC and boy oh boy, does it pull for 'only' 150hp. It's super reliable, has great mileage (around 35-38mpg) and is mega fun to drive! Overall I'd give it a solid 8/10.

Yep, cost cutting was actually a trend in the late 90s and early 2000s among Japanese manufacturers, they're all guilty of it, not just Honda. It was because their economic bubble of the 80s finally collapsed. My 2000 Maxima has a solid rear axle, where as the previous generation used independent rear suspension. Independent rear suspension then returned for the 2004 model because their economy recovered. Honda went away with double wishbone to save money on production and never went back because the Civic still sold like crazy...so they seen it as unnecessary cost and complexity, both of which Honda had a reputation for avoiding.

I had a 97 coupe EX, would've loved if I'd had room in my life for it and some money to throw at it for a refurbishment. Sold it though ☹️ still spot it sometimes, it's still in pretty good shape for salty NY State

I have a '95 civic with 44k miles on the clock. It was my grandad's from new and he kept it garaged it's entire life. I think it is a lovely car, classy and understated. Very comfy ride too.
Outdated in tech and safety, but still tops in performance driving and ride quality thanks to the double wishbone front suspension. Honda dumped that in the 2001 redesign for cheap, generic McPherson struts. That's what made honda/Acura of the 90s awesome, every model used double wishbones, had revvy engines, were lightweight, had large windows with great sight lines and felt like a racecar with a stick (which most had).
they also had all the tech that is great to have (individual injectors, aluminium valve covers, cyl heads, engine blocks, 4 valves per cylinder, variable timing, chain-driven timing in some cases, and legendary reliability in general) and none of the unnecessary tech that only makes it a pain in the ass (turbocharging, complex automatic gearbox, serial catalytic converters, EGR's, auto stop-start systems, overuse of plastic in engine bay i.e. plastic intake manifold, plastic water pump, plastic valve cover etc.)
True that... we have two Civic sedans in the family a '97 and '03. The '97 handles a bit like a sports car on twisty roads. The '03 is faster, but any car nut who enjoys driving should steer clear of this model as every corner brings sadness. It's the most miserable handling car I have driven from that era. I sure hope it was never sold to anyone who was already depressed!!!
My 99 tl has wishbone suspension honestly it doesn't handle that great. But saying that even for being an old auto car it's still fun. People would be surprised how peppy it is.
@@Yophillips3272 Lol com'on, any 20+ year old midsized automatic sedan is going to feel like a boat. Bushings and suspension is worn, automatic will be janky (especially a Honda one). A unicorn 70k mile cl Type-s with 6spd manual would feel great...I know because a friend had one like 10 years ago. Awesome car.
@@michaelangelo5783 It's not that bad it just could use more tire and lowered. My ex had a 6spd CL it was a better car in every way lol If I get a newer car I'll probably get a 04+ TL. Maybe 6 speed but im ok with auto.
Well actually it's called the Honda domani but in the UK it was the civic. And also the rover based off the domani not the the other way round and honda used their own engines and same for rover
Plenty of them still on the road. Fantastic machines. Fulfilled the most important job a car has - get from A to B and back again reliably. My Honda did 340K on same engine and gearbox and was still going strong when I sold it to a very shocked buyer who couldn’t find one rattle
The 1.8 VTi model with 167hp really was a little pocket rocket, and with 5 doors and a big boot, practical too. Not to mention reliable and decent on fuel. The fact it was so plain to look at was part of the appeal - Very understated car that could eat Golf GTis for breakfast, but that cops, boy racers and joy riders wouldn't notice.
Yeahh. That's true, I can confirm. And easy to modificate and reach Integra Type-R horsepower, and better acceleration too. And has better brakes than the 1.6 VTi sedan and hatchback models. 😁 Ohh, and there is factory Torsen LSD
@@Matias-dr3ys uh no the gti has much more hp stock in any generation since the mk4, and tuned even more so. Don't get me wrong I like the Civic but it would be beaten by a GTI any day of the week.
@@stefancgxz7799 they seem pretty similar still. both manufacturers 1.8 and 2 liter engines have very similar performance numbers but i wonder about cornering since atleast 6th gen civics have double wishbone suspension but i dont know much about golfs so i dont know what kind of suspension a gti golf has. i still think it will come down the whos the better driver.
so......you had it for two years? Minimum driving age is 16, and you just said "Had it until i was 18". Sorry, but you don't really "know a car" until you've driven it for at least 4-5 years.
@@anonyninja7737 it, the car was 11 when I got it, 18 when I let it go. 2 years? 5 years? I think it's what you do of driving with it that will matter. If you drive it for 2 years and you do 60 000 km with it, you will know it better then when you have it for 5 years and drive 20 000 km with it ...
Rover 400/45 & MG ZS series vehicles also use this exact chassis. Parts are interchangeable too. I know because I fitted a Civic MB front and rear end and full interior into a Rover 420 diesel :)

EM1 Civic (the last year of the 96-2000 model) was the best car Honda ever made. Extremely reliable, amazing fuel economy and if you can get your hands on an Si, theyre pretty fun sporty like cars.

Honda makes great cars! I have a 2020 Honda Civic with the naturally aspirated, port injected K20C2 engine. Even Honda mechanics say they are surprised how well the cars has held up for the mileage, even compared to other Honda vehicles. I also love how the decent steering and handling, while having a comfortable ride and fairly low road noise, makes this car almost feel like it has an entry level luxury car balance without the luxury price. Mazda and Honda are the best Car brands hands down!
The Asians do it right. :) Mazda, Toyota and Honda are very reliable nowadays, and all three are stuffed to the brim with nice technology. Hopefully the tech doesn't fail if a solar storm collides with Earth. Lol...

New Mazdas are so good to the point where I really cannot see why I should get even the new Mazda3 over an entry level German luxury car, just a much better value while still feeling very luxurious. Oh, and MUCH cheaper on repairs!
My father owned one of these for 18 years... Never broke down a single time and engine would always start effortlessly on a single key turn. Even on the day iit was sold, not a single problem with it, still in 100% working order. It was an epitome of reliability.
@@numberpirate There were LHD MB's sold in other parts of Europe. As well as the Civic MC's. Although the Rover was RHD due to being exclusive to the UK, the dashboard is shared across the line for European models. I was planning on importing the dashboard since it should be a direct swap and bolt right up, and it's far classier than the US and Japanese counterparts.
@@scootersonlyrepair6773 Very true. But I really love the EJ coupe. I just wish it had the nice interior the Rover 400 had, and I wouldn't want to import an entire car just to gut it. Importing an Aerodeck though... might just be worth it since Orthia's are rare.
What i like about this video is they aren’t selling you a lifestyle they aren’t trying to pander to a select audience. He talks about the performance features and safety, he is selling just a car. It's not the same as the badge engineering between GM's European brands (Opel, Vauxhall). Rover and Honda were in a partnership to mutually benefit and learn from each other in the '80s and '90s. Rovers weren't manufactured by Honda. The 200 and 400 lines were built on platforms co-developed between the two companies. The Japanese sister cars being the Ballade, Concerto and Domani. You could have a Rover 1.4/1.6, a Honda 1.6 or Peugeot diesel engine 200/400.
I just sold one of those early this year. Automatic, but a 90s Honda in good shape so great anyway. VTEC, sway bar, shorter gearing, and a moonroof were nice bonuses (thank you EX trim). Still miss it. Enjoy it buddy

as a japanese car fan, one might easily think I might be biased, but in my opinion old french car commercials were the most creative of all. 90s french car ads had humour and meaning
