1996 Toyota 4runner double cardan joint

I'm rebuilding the double cardan joint in my 1996 toyota 4runner in order to fix the vibration that has been worsening over the last few months. It is also causing a thumping noise when taking off from a stop and growling noise on the highway. I have always stuggled with double cardan joints but I don't rebuild them often. Most of the time on the Jeeps and Dodge trucks the flange or nipple needs replaced so it make since for me to just send those to the driveline shop.
I could not find the parts listed for a 1996 or newer toyota 4runner but they seem to be the same parts that my 1996 toyota pickup uses. If the parts don't fit properly don't use them!!!!
The parts I used for this was a PRE 614 ball and socket kit from Orielly's and two UJ 513 universal joints from Napa. I also replaced the rear universal joint and it was a uj285 from napa.
614 cardan ball kit amzn.to/2BQJBuH
513 universal joint amzn.to/317mXqC
Here some tools that may help you perform Universal joint replacements for efficiently.
External ujoint snap ring pliers - amzn.to/30ri4K5
Alemite grease gun - amzn.to/3fnLGMn
Lucas red and tacky grease - amzn.to/3foLxbs

Thanks for posting this most forums act like it can never repaired the parts don't exist and that its just time to buy a new drieshaft. I just did the rear u joint and I plan to do this next. It was a huge help and the part number was a life saver.

Although it’s not the easiest solution it does save the wallet quite a bit. It’s not a job I offer many customers because it’s a time consuming task. I will usually send out to driveline shop to have them perform the repair and check the balance.

Thank you. This is one of the only videos of this teardown and rebuild for the Toyota that I could find, and it was immensely helpful. I started trying to dig into the double cardan without knowing there was more complexity and parts to it. Likely wouldn't have been able to do this without your video.

Thank you!!! Just rebuilt a double cardan on my 2002 Tacoma. Hardest part was tracking down the 2 U joints and cv bearing for the double cardan. The exterior u joints I was able to find at Napa with vehicle specifications. Ended up having to call a drive shaft shop and order the parts. For anyone reading this there are two different sizes of CV bearings that can go into these Toyota double cardans. Be sure to measure the outer race of the bearing to see what size it is. The difference is less than a 1/4” in diameter. Not a complicated job if you take your time. Instead of a hammer I used a ball joint c clamp press I rented from Napa. I am not as skilled as this gentleman with the hammer apparently and ended up knocking some of the needles loose.

@@jimothy138 the outer u joints you can find at any regular auto store. The inner u joints and centering bearing I got from a drive line shop in Pomona California. Unfortunately I threw away the boxes. The shop I called was JE Reel drive shaft services at 909-629-9002. Super friendly guy, sent my parts out the same day I spoke with him. You just have to know what size centering bearing you have. There’s only two possible that fit he said. But the parts he gave me were exactly what I took out of my stock UJoint. $60 for each u joint and $40 for the bearing if I remember correctly and then pay for shipping of course. Hope this helps 🤘

Sure wish I came across this earlier. I had a local driveshaft company tell me they wouldn't rebuild mine. Rather than looking for another place to do it I decided to tackle it on my own. I wound up welding bolts on the caps and using a socket to pull the caps out. It was the only way I could get them to budge here in the 'rust belt' Your methods would have made my rebuild much easier but I 'muddled through' and got it. I use Toyota driveshafts on my 1992 Suzuki Samurai as they are more than twice as strong as the stockers. Thanks again for this video.

I'm actually Very Impressed. I'm a Toyota MDT and we are Not allowed to Rebuild the DC Joint. I have a 2002 4x4 4Runner and the Joint finally wore out. For $1200 my cost, I decided to get an AM drive shaft and have a vibration. I'll go down to the Driveshaft Shop and have them balance it and see how it is. If not "perfect" then I'll scrounge the Salvage Yards for one and have the joint rebuilt.

They are technically not rebuildable since no factory parts are available. The parts I used are for the older generation. The ball doesn’t fit as tight as the OEM but I haven’t had any issues on my 4Runner since rebuilding it. If it wasn’t my own I probably would have recommended a shaft.

@@ThePracticalMechanic haha at least Toyota shafts last 300k miles if greased once in a while. My Suzuki XL7 is developing an annoying vibe on the highway only in 5th gear...gear oil is seeping between the trans and the tcase. Maybe a loose input bearing on the tcase? Ever seen that problem? Only has 177k on the clock 😒
@ThePracticalMechanic
@ThePracticalMechanic 4 года назад
I looked through my service information and the 4wd manual transmission diagrams are lacking in detail. If it’s leaking I’d double check the fluid level. It may just need extra lube on that little 5th gear set. I have not had one of those transmissions apart before. It may have an output seal in the back of the transmission or it may be sealed with a gasket up against the transfer case. Hope the transfer case is a design that can be easily removed. Does it vibe at a certain speed? Does it change under accel and decel? I’m sending another 4runner driveshaft to the driveline shop today because it has a highway vibration. My shaft installed in that 4runner fixes the issue so I’m suspecting it’s bent or out of balance.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics 4 года назад
@@ThePracticalMechanic I tore the t-case off last week to take a look. Two oil seals, trans output was dry, tcase input was leaking. No crazy play in any of the shafts, but the t-case input had slight radial play by hand. Refilled both with fresh Redline MT90 and took it on a 350-mile trip. Shifts butter smooth, but vibes are still getting worse ONLY in 5th gear, especially when the driveline is nice and hot. It's pretty bad 45-50mph, gets more tolerable over 70mph. Got back and underside was covered in gear oil coming from the weep hole haha. Ordered a t-case input gear bearing and oil seal...will see if that helps :) P.S. before vibe was bad just under accel, but now it's noticeable anytime it's in 5th...

Hey buddy, I just took apart mt rear driveshaft on my 3rd gen (2001) 4runner and found that the double cardan U-joints are a different size than the U-joint at the rear of the driveshaft that bolts up to the rear axle. Going to order some UJ513s and hopefully they will fit, thank you so much for sharing.
@montgomerybojangles8644
@montgomerybojangles8644 3 года назад
Also for anyone doing this job do NOT for whatever reason spin the ball inwards inside the cardan joint itself. The spring will cause it to get stuck and you will not be able to spin the ball back around into the correct position unless you unscrew the grease fitting and line up the spring with the grease hole and push it into place, then spin the ball back around. Curiosity cost the cat about 30 minutes.

It wasn't the 513 for my truck (2001 4runner Sr5 4wd 3.4) I believe its the spicer 1310. going to retun the 513s and grab the 1310s. I noticed my old ujoints had outer lock rings. and the outer bearing diameter is 1.063" same as a spicer 1310.

@@montgomerybojangles8644 Tried to fit 1310s in my 2002 4wd 4runner's double cardan. Didn't work, the joints had the right cap diameter but were a hair bit too wide for the outer clips to fit in. 1310s are about 3.219 in, while the OEMs are closer to 3.12. I am assuming you also have the exterior clips and your double cardan doesnt have the holes in the center like the one seen in the video?

He does indeed have a very good series but the arbor press methods don't always work on high mileage or rusty components. Many times the vibration from a hammer is required. I do want to get a few of the adaptors he has in the videos but some of them are now discontinued. I was helping the local ford dealership with some brake line repairs and saw one tech installing a brand new driveshaft in a f250. I asked him what was wrong with the old one and he told me the U-joints were bad. He said no one ever changes u-joints anymore. I was amazed and recommended for them to watch the Weber Auto series if they didn't know how to replace them. The driveshaft was $1200 parts and labor.
