One thing I learned from this video is about those "Philip Head" screws that they are really not Philip head but some Japanese standard screws. No wonder one gets a 'feeling' that there is something not right using the Philip head screw driver on these screws. Thanks for this very informative video. Good job!
Excellent video, I bought a 99 Solara with a rod through the block, purchased a motor and tranny from another Solara that got T-boned bad! Installed them both together, had to remove 02 Sensor from original motor cause the replacement motor sensor connector was slightly different! Never had a single issue. Now several years later I'm getting ready to service the throttle body, will compare them both to see if I got different emissions stuff on them, thanx ALOT for this video 👍💪👌
That gives me an great idea as to why my car won't get ready for emmissions ive had 2 not ready for 819 Mike's now, I do know this car is Cali emmissions with a federal motor.. thanks a ton for your explanation.
Awesome video, I bought a 98 Camry and the guy couldnt figure out why the check engine light was on and also it was stalling when the rpms dropped hoping to solve it with this fix, thank you !!!!
Update 2001 california emissions engine swaped into a 1997 non cal emissions And this video applies👍 If the cal tb is with the non cal computer, the engine will high idle until it is swaped out for a non cal.
Very Very Informative Video, ,,& I Totally Agree 125% with John Galyen..."& I quote .."You should be a teacher!'"....Automotive Schools Could Really Benefit From Your Vast Knowledge /Communication!! ...Teach Me As .I'm rather curious on something ,where on Toyota Throttle Body Casting ..Do You Find/Locate the OEM Toyota Part Number #..?..I see the Raised Toyota Name on the casting, but have yet to find the part number# ..on any Toyota Made throttle bodies:(
Thanks. Many OEM parts, including Toyota, will have a part number cast or stamped into the part itself. But all will be found within the OEM dealers parts ordering system. Parts explosions, or diagrams, detail the individual components right down to the washer and bolt. I have access to this information, and wholesale parts pricing, as a professional. But as a DIYer you can also get access to this same level of detail thru various Toyota dealers who sell parts online at retail pricing. Some, but unfortunately not all, will offer these same detailed parts diagrams to identify such numbers.
I have a 2001 Camry, I changed IAC valve and it seems to be the California emissions and body throttle, can I get a federal assembly and have it fit and replace the old California body throttle. Looks like it might not fit or am I wrong
They are unique to the engines intake manifold. Toyota built the engine two different ways to address the two different emissions regulations in effect in 1997 thru 2001.
So who has the correct part number for a California emissions IACV? I JUST realized before installing my new one that I ordered the wrong one--- thanks to Toyota's VIN lookup not working (despite triple checking I typed it correctly).
Hey Dr.Shock !! Its me again i got the part offline for like 30 bucks and it matched the car perfectly i just called toyota and gave them the vin and they gave me the part number and i bought the matched part online it idles normal now but is still throwing the same code ? Any thing else it could be ?
This particular code, P0505, can be a multi-fault one. Having the correct throttle body on I would next inspect the idle air control (IAC) and throttle plate. The former for correct operation, the latter to clean and de-carbonize it.
I replaced the engine 2.2 toyota and I didn't notice cylinder head was diferente injectors didn't fit so I put injectors that fit and now I notice cylinder head doesn't have a vacuum line behind of it now I replaced the throtte body but computer detects code p0505 so I will try to replaced idle speed control for federal emissions
So i bought a 97 Toyota Camry for my daughter and it will start and then stall but after a few more attemps and pressing the gas pedal a little bit, it will stay running, and idle by itself, but high around 1100 rpm, but if i press on the gas it will stall, check engine code p0505 is showing, my question is how do i know if the computer is set for California, or fed, i do know the TB i have is California, and do you know how to do a idle reset for this one ?
In this vid I go over how to visually identify the differences in the two throttle bodies. I'm not aware of any other way to tell them apart than what I showed here. This is only one possible cause for a P0505 though. In the video I go over that it's something to check when you have a stubborn code that will not diagnose to root cause in the typical fashion. Usually this code is caused by a problem with the idle air control (IAC) valve being inoperative, or carbon deposits inside the throat of the throttle body affecting the closure of the plates. I would start with confirming correct operation of the IAC by disconnecting it first and examining it for carbon build-up affecting its operation, followed by removing the throttle body and giving it a thorough cleaning.
@@DrShock i did take it off and cleaned it and i am thinking about just replacing it, I'm glad i found your video on identify the TB difference, costing around $120, i can order one feeling good and not worrying if i ordered the wrong one. Thanks
@@DrShock okay i just checked the one on my car is rounded on the block !!! You can tell from just looking from on top yay!! So now im going to take the Ca emissions back to autozone and go to pick a part in Anaheim but what about the gasket and is there an lubricant or glue i need ?
Hey Doc, we have a CA car and it had the same code with a Fed throttle body! I swapped to the CA like you did and there is no large vacuum hose on the CA IAC, so I blocked it off for now. But now it surges at idle. I've heard that the TB coolant passages are different? both hoses slipped right on to the CA unit..any help?
I've only worked on this one Camry with the 5S-FE engine (2.2L), so what I know here is going to be limited to the 1997-2001 years. But from what I recall researching this problem most parts around emissions (fuel/air/coolant) are not interchangeable between Cali and Fed engines at all. So yeah there could many more parts that are quite different than just the one I covered here. Did the P0505 code clear when you corrected the wrong IAC?
@@DrShock Sorry, I didn't see you replied! I have the exact same year and problem you did. 97 4 cyl with CA emissions with the larger openings on the IAC. I can not find the correct IAC with the larger openings and the large vacuum hose that goes to it. I bought the correct TB, but no IAC. I thought you might remember or have some spare parts. Whats the chances of both of us having the FED TB on a CA car? thanks
@@GMVracing The problem here is when these vehicles get worked on by individuals unaware of these Toyota differences and they just throw on a replacement part, not realizing they made whatever original problem they were supposed to diagnose worse now. So we are just left to clean that up and move on right. ;-) For when you look for the IAC valve, you'll see they call out whether its for Fed or Cali emissions, like this search link at rockauto.com - www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/toyota,2000,camry,2.2l+l4,1364633,fuel+&+air,idle+air+control+(iac)+valve,6072
I got the same code but people are telling me I need to get a new charcoal canister. My check engine light has been on for months now with no fix. I need help!
I have a 1999 with the small holes and my 2001 has the bigger holes. I think it about what year the Camry is 1997-1999 have smaller holes and 2000 and 2001 have bigger holes.
