I took my 1998 Megaset on RAGBRAI a few years back and it was absolutely beautiful for that. I managed to get the frame NOS and built it up with SRAM Rival, Deda cockpit and a vintage SI Flite saddle. The one thing: I wish I could run tires bigger than 23mm but the fork won't have it. Maybe sourcing a carbon fork like you did is the answer!

Hi Luis. I like Bianchi's too. Just mentioning Bianchi in title has a misspelling and I hope you will have more videos because I find you clear, interesting, thoughtful and thorough in analysis. Keep up the good videos and enjoy your rides! Btw I have a suggestion. Would you be able to contact a frame-builder and have a frame made and track what it does for you and document the process? I would love to get your take on the process amd benefits. My friend makes some nice steel frames. His name is Nao Tomii. But there are others as well.
@thegoodwheel
@thegoodwheel 2 года назад
Thanks James! How did I miss that misspelling... thank you. I will definitely continue with the videos. At some point, I will do something like that but my next build is going to be a 90s steel MTB turned into gravel monster. 👍🏾

@@thegoodwheel that is a fun project I was interested in myself. If you can get the weight down it should ride well in say True Temper OX which was in the Treks. I used my '98 M2 S-Works for urban use and enjoyed the Nimbus tires at 80psi but when using Serfas at 60 and 2.0 width it was comfy but a lot slower. I think lightness and speed are keys here. Also on descents my riser bars caused me to parachute into the air because I was too upright. So maybe you can incorporate geometry of the body angles into the video so that people can see how you are achieving the right balance between comfort and aero. Good stuff! Take care

Hey Luis, love your channel. I'm new to cycling at 49 and I've learned a lot watching your videos. Thanks for your efforts even if you don't reply. Troy
@thegoodwheel
@thegoodwheel Год назад
Hi Troy. Sorry for the late response. I don't know if it is the same one, but I saw a blue one. I can't really make recommendations about a specific used bike but the Campione D'Italia is one of those names Bianchi used that was all over the place in terms of tube quality. This one seems to use a mid level tubing drawn up specifically for Bianchi but has very very entry level components. The main thing is if it is sound and fits you well. Hope that helps somewhat.👍🏾

Luis, how can a steel frame "soak up the bumps" and feel "plush," but a steel fork "beats you up?" 🤔
@thegoodwheel
@thegoodwheel Год назад
Simple B Parker. Different steels, grade of steel and construction method. It's just like riding some steel frames can feel less compliant than others.
@bparker
@bparker Год назад
Would a high quality steel fork actually ride / feel more harsh riding in comparison to a carbon fork? I've heard many bike tourers like steel frame and steel forks for the overall "plushness" of the ride quality. Your opinion is helpful in planning my next build as I'm a bit hung up on whether or not I want a carbon fork on my steel frame bike.
@thegoodwheel
@thegoodwheel Год назад
@@bparker potentially, yes. A unicrown fork (like the one I replaced) is lighter and stiffer. A lugged fork is going to be be heavier but more compliant. The fork rake is also very important for damping purposes. Hope that helps.
@bparker
@bparker Год назад
@@thegoodwheel Yes! Very helpful! Was not even thinking about unicrown forks (not something I'm interested in). Looking forward to your new series! Would love to see you do a build from the frame up or see some of the other bikes in your stable as "bike check" / review videos.

Interesting you found the steel fork to be harsh contrary to your opinion of steel frames which provide more compliance. Why do you think the fork was different?
@thegoodwheel

I have never considered steel wheelset. I prefer box alloy wheelset, like the Fulcrum racing zero, Mavic Kxyrium or even Easton EA90. They are more than capable with proper maintenance of the bearings. I have a set of Zipp 303/404, but prefer the alloys in most cases.👍🏾
