In Episode 11 of the Quest for Perfection on the 1997 BMW E36 M3 sedan, we replace the broken/damaged left side skirt rubber seal that runs along the length of the vehicle in between the wheelbase. The existing seal is missing in certain parts and this project addresses one of the final exterior repairs on the initial project list for the M3.
I remove the underside pins/dows that are hammered into fasteners that lock into the body panels under the car. Similar fasteners on the rear of the side skirt must be removed to pull the side skirt off. Once all dows/pins/fasteners are removed, you can pull the side skirt off and snap it out of the white fasteners attaching it to the profile side of the car under the front and rear doors. The white fasteners are likely to remain attached to the car.
We replaced all fasteners and grommets and pins/dows as part of this thorough DIY project, and gave special attention to cleaning all surfaces that were caked with dirt and debris from 20 years of use. Finally, we removed the rear tire to gain enough space to hammer the rear dows/pins into place.
Total projects time from start to finish was approximately 5 hours, but this was as thorough and encompassing as this project gets. Others looking to skip steps can probably do it in half the time or less. But we like to do it once and do it right!

agree with your comments, Chris; it is why I don't get a shop to do it, as these fiddly jobs to do right, take time. Thanks for caring about the car! W.

lol you are struggling for no reason. Pull the center out if not clip the tip and push the middle through with a pick or tiny flat head. replace the gromet and pin when you reinstall with a new one. applying silicone spray to the plastic fittings before messing with them is also very helpful.

For anyone using the parts list to order fasteners, note that the quantities suggested are for replacement of ONE side skirt, with a few extra fasteners in case you break some. If you’re replacing BOTH side skirts, double the quantities of fasteners.

I shall return! My passenger side skirt is coming loose on my track car. I don’t want to replace it because it self disassembled at 100+

I usually take just the bolt itself without the round plastic washer when I take those kind of pins out but they are never this hard haha

The car's body looks the same without the rocker panels. I'm pulling them off my race car and sealing the holes. Thanks.

Loving all of your videos. Question- do you know if there is a way to simply re-pad the driver's door armrest (not center)? After a couple of decades it needs padding, but the leather is still in good condition (some small cracks, but no tears). Thanks!

I have a question, what's the size of the holes where the grommets for the side skirts meets the plastic guides (white plastic fasteners)? mine's doesn't have the holes across the rocker panel, but the side skirts below has the holes.

My e36 m3 has the same wear. I have a lift in my garage so not so much contorting your body like a pretzel....All that work for a 12" piece of thin rubber gasket cos peeps cant lift their feet getting in and out...

And only you or I can probably tell it was ever replaced. The retaining clips were the things I M'Fd the most. I think I broke several and almost ran short -- I even bought extras knowing I was guaranteed to break something.

How did you remove the green body grommets in order to install new ones? They are a hard plastic, and really seat themselves tightly in the body holes via two tabs on the backside. I’m trying to come up with a way to remove them without causing any damage. I bought a full new set of green grommets.

He does it at 10:46 with needle nose
@RbNetEngr
@RbNetEngr 2 года назад
@@Riley-rk5jp I tried using needle nose pliers, but the grommets are anchored in pretty tightly and pulling on them made the metal start to pull outward as well. So I used my Dremel with a rounded bit and inserted it into the grommet to basically split it on the inside, then they easily pulled out.

Kiwi Tile was/is the brand. Not sure if they are still in business. It was more or less the cheaper alternative to Race Deck about 15yrs ago. Thats me, always looking to save a buck.

I removed my left side skirt this weekend. I didn't have any difficulties at all. Those plastic fasteners along the bottom easily pried out using TWO pry hooks, one on each side of the center pin, to pry the center pins up. For the two rear fasteners along the fender lip, I just got my Dremel and drilled out the center pins, so I'll need to replace them. I did have to remove the rear tire to get good access to those fasteners on the fender lip. And none of the white plastic clips along the side got broken during removal. And the seals on my car are fine, so I don't need to replace them. I sure didn't say as many f**cks as you. Maybe only three or four! Thanks again for a detailed video.

Lmfao. I’m a tech myself, and doing this job is painful to watch no matter who does it. It SUCKS. It’s one of the few shit E36 jobs to do. The clips break during removal AND install... BMW “menace” would NOT have it done in 15 mins. You think techs are wizards or something? 😂🤣😂

@@dustinjohnson9166 I know this is old, I had a problem all mine were stuck, I drilled the middle out and the came out way easy and fast, 25 yo clips are a pain no matter what
