There's a fuel line on my 96 explorer that has to be moved out of the way to get the top bolt out. It took me hours to figure out what was blocking the bolt and then how to move the fuel line. None of these videos show that.

The upper bolts are horrendously difficult to get back into the new control arm. The right side had to be punched out when removing. Kudos on this video - you did it amazingly simple.

Thank you, Thank you! Your video was terrific and gave me the guts to replace this part myself. I did have that same problem with the rear bolt, though. Futzing around with a couple of clamps for about 45 minutes was what it took (plus a little cursing). The Ford dealership wanted close to $2,000 to do this and the rear brakes. That price included all the front ball joints but this was the only critical one. Your video was clear and concise. You are very much appreciated!

All of your viewers, myself included are disappointed how you skip the part of how hard it really is to remove the upper left side arm. I don't know how hard it is to mount the new one in, since I never got the old one off. From what I read from one of your viewers, the right side is just as hard to replace as well. In this video you make everything look so easy, but really it's not. It would have been nice if you would have recorded eveything, so we could see how you ultimately got them off.

Great JOB! I had a shop to do both sides and they for some reason tried to use a plain flat washer. Had it aligned twice before we figured out what this shop had done as the alignment was out as soon as i drove away. It is now fixed properly and aligned. Wish I has seen your video before I paid this less that quality shop. Joel Justin.

I just removed the aft driver side bolt on the control arm of a 1998 Explorer Sport 4.0 SOHC. I had to remove a fuel line metal shield located to the rear of the bolt. There are four 7 or 8mm bolts. Under that shield, I unbolted a clamp holding the two lines together. I also removed one line from a plastic clip just to the left of the bolt head. Then carefully spun and pressed the bolt out, threading the head with offset spacer between the two fuel lines. Not a happy experience.
@APDTY
@APDTY 14 лет назад
@jeepsaround I know exactly the bolt you are talking about, there is unfortunately no easy way to get that bolt out. I ended up having to unbolt the clamps which hold the metal lines to the frame. Once those are undone, you can carefully pry up on the lines while wiggling the bolt out. We didn't include it in the video because many of the explorer's and rangers don't have those lines. Thanks!

@jebmoore Honestly I have always found it easier to replace just the ball-joint than the entire control arm. To replace the control arm also involves removing the spring (or torsion bar if it's 4x4). But the ball joint in my opinion is simple if you have the correct tool (The Loaner Ball-Joint Press). And does not require removal of the entire control arm.
@APDTY
@APDTY 13 лет назад
@chpjimmy A torsion bar suspension is not nearly as hazardous to work with as a coil spring suspension, but I would still recommend supporting the lower control arm with a jackstand while working on the truck. Keeping the control arm close to road-level height makes installing the components easier. Thanks!

@blueridgepics Sorry about that, Personally I've always found the back one to be more difficult, and thats why we focused more on removing that one, if we do a similar job in the future I will be sure to include the front bolt removal. Thanks.

@sayian2k If the shop isn't too far away you can drive it, just avoid high speed driving or long distances, because your alignment could be off really bad which will destroy your tires. But a mile or two won't hurt.

WHAT HAPPEND TO THE PART WHERE THE BOLTS COME OUT? THATS THE PART IM LOOKING FOR. WHAT YOU ARE SHOWING DOESNT HELP AT ALL.
@APDTY
@APDTY 12 лет назад
It really depends on how close the alignment is to the factory spec after replacing them. You can eyeball the alignment (Make sure both front wheels are pointed the exact same direction) and you should be fine to drive 3-5 miles.

Ok,why Is it you don't show the HARD PART,getting the ba c k bolt OUT OR IN? Every mechanic shop finds the part that is aimost impossible to remove and replace and they cut the hour of fighting the problem and just TELL YOU TO PUT THE BOLT AND NUT BACK IN !!! THIS GUY HIDES THE HARD PART TOO!!! Bad habits, bad video 😢 😊

I was told by various alignment places, that I had to install a camber/caster kit on my 1997 Exp, in order to do a proper alignment. So I replaced the bolts (And man, were they a PITA! There's no easy way to do them.) Is this correct? However, I believe I should replace the upper control arms, because the bushings dont look that great, though theres no play in the control arms. The new control arm for the passenger side is a one piece, as Ford did away with the 2 piece. Is this going to a prob?
@TheJeepWheeler
@TheJeepWheeler 12 лет назад
Why is the driver side a one piece while the passneger side in Part 1 of this series is a two piece design for the control arm? Is that how it is on all 2nd Gen. explorers?

I really needed to see how you got the rear bushing bolt out around the brake and fuel lines, why did you cut this portion out. the rest is easy, but getting the bolt around those lines is impossible!

Good vid. What would be the total time of the job? I heard 1.5-2 hrs. How much is the part usually? Thanks
@APDTY
@APDTY 11 лет назад
That won't be a problem, especially if you are upgrading to the adjustable bolts. The reason they had a two piece on that was side was to allow for caster adjustment, it was a poor method in my opinion, because you couldn't adjust the total caster angle, only the cross-caster angle.

dropof blood I actually ended up getting it out, it took a long mf time but rest assured it’s only the OEM bolts that are that much of a bitch, the replacement camber bolts come with removable plates you can line up with the bolt hole and then tighten. Getting them out is a bitch Forsure tho. Also unless you do your own alignments no shop will do it if you reuse old camber bolts. They can only really get it a couple points neg/pos but the old bolt won’t allow it to get fully aligned, according to the shops here.

First thanks for the video it is great and I will definitely be replacing the upper arm myself but I do have one question. When referencing the Chiltons manual it says that the Lower ball joints are also integral to the control arm, I see a few videos on removing the lower ball joint on other explorers without replacing the lower arm and was wondering what you recommend. Thanks again

What about the oval holes where the big bolts go through to hold the Arm on I wished I'd known they were oval holes looking like they're allowing you adjustment I wished I would have known before I take the bolts loose I would have put a angle finder on there so I can get the same setting when I put it back together

QUESTION: When using a Camber Adjusting Kit do you still keep the OEM shim spacer?
@APDTY
@APDTY 10 лет назад
when using a camber adjusting kit, you will not use the OEM shim spacer, the OEM one is designed to hold the camber to a specific predetermined value, the aftermarket camber adjusting kit is made to replace that completely, so you just toss the old one.

i see you have a jack stand under the lower a-arm. I have a ranger edge with the torsion bar suspension also but a 2wd. Would i have to do the same? does this keep it from going to full droop? mine are almost there due to maxing the t-bars out for lift. any suggestions?

It is a pain to get those bolts out, there is no easy way of explaining it other than to fight with it. You may need to unbolt things like the metal lines if they are in your way.

This is as about as easy as climbing Mount Everest. Spend a whole day fighting this Sons of bitches . Went on line and a guy had the smartest idea ever. Cut the friking bold a half inch There is plenty to spare. Those bolts were designed too long for the camber bolt washer to make it past the fuel lines. Make sure u push the upper control arm inwards so the head of the camber bolt doesnt hit the fuel lines, Trust me it works Do the left side first!!!. GOOD LUCK!!
