There really is no comparison from the 97 to the 22 BUT the 97 sure is cool. Its amazing how far sleds have come in 25 years though. I must say I am happy we have what we have these days!!

My first snowmobile experience was on one of those 97 xcr's. it was such a blast driving on lakes where everything is flat, but the moment you threw it in corners or god forbid loose snow, prepare to suffer.. Riding that thing for 6 hours or more your throttle thumb would actually grow a six pack holding those 3 carb slides open. compared to my 2016 pro rmk that xcr is a literal brick. only benefit is the triple sound :')

Stiffer the second # on the secondary clutch , longer it stays geared lower in the fluffy stuff , heavy wet snow

I have a 2000 model year 800 xcr the time it was a luxury Trail machine that happened to be a muscle sled. Compared to everything else in that day extremely quiet very easy to start good on gas and the cockpit was very smooth. In a drag race I will put it up against that new 800 xcr on Ice any day of the week

Sold a friend a 98 600 special , last year , 13 mpg , same motor , longer stroke , XCR would have gotten Fox shocks , nice flat groom trail sled , Tuesday & Thursday nights by me , leave late at night , and always meet the groomer , doing the 2nd side , trail missle FUN , no oncoming traffic , deer are bedded down , no studs ! Better slides !

The fact that the 800 xcr is still compared against today's machines is a testament to the old Fuji. To have a stock machine with some Port work but no aftermarket pipes or carburetors or anything like that hitting 103 or even faster mph in 660' and doing 115 mph in the thousand feet and 132 miles an hour on top end there are numbers that a stock boost without a tune is never going to put down

Out of box back then like he said they were so fat on jetting and poorly setup Starting line used to have a line of skis called easy steer and they were a good upgrade, especially when them old sleds had steel skis The other problem is you had a million aftermarket companies selling products to people who shouldn't be wrenching. Then you end up with pistons burnt up

I have a 1996 600 XCR SP that I've recently updated. Had the water pump rebuilt and cleaned up the pipes. It's fun to compare the old and new technology. This winter, I'll get a picture of it with the new XC. BTW, you are missing the fiberglass and aluminum wraps on the pipes. That stuff is a bit hard to come by, unless you can find them at a swap meet. Great video. Keep the old stuff running!

@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754
Back then, the sleds were very heavy they were geared very high, and they were clutch very soft. Upgrade to an aftermarket track, drop the gearing almost a two-to-one ratio, and get real aggressive on the secondary Upgrade to the rack carbs from the 800 xcr and upgrade to some vforce Reeds drop the heads .010" you would gain quite a bit of crispness in the throttle response and easier pull on your thumb The intake ports were already very aggressive on that engine, but the exhaust could use some work, I usually spend 2-3 hrs on the bottom of the cylinder and top of case. On the 600 I would also take a 1/2 out of the center of the pipes for a small bump in rpms, and a .060" bushing in the stinger, 8500 would be a nice rpm after Port work and pipe work,

Google it I just did it was an awesome looking sled for it’s time, and handled in my mind at the time like it was on a rail lol. And now own a 2022 XCR 850 same color scheme as the one in this video. I had a 98 xcr 600 just like that one in the video. It was a great Sled in its time. It was fast, but probably the most scary Sled I've ever owned. They were so heavy in the front end, that when came hard into a corner, they were almost impossible to turn. There were more than a few times I didn't think I was going to make a turn because of how heavy the front was. Add aggressive carbines on skis and fully studded track, and they only wanted to go straight. You will have arms of steel after riding that sled for a while.

Arctic cat had the first trailing arm suspension a year before Polaris in a production sled, wasnt very good but they had it. Arctic cat was the first to offer production fox shocks. Arctic cat was the first with A arm front suspension. The first TXL 340 rode and handled really good and would scoot right along for a little 340 . I would take that 96 xcr over the new bug style xcr any day. Arctic had the most innovation through the years of the remaining 4ish ( yamaha is more of an engine supplier now) manufactures followed by Polaris and then Yamaha, not too sure if ski doo had any firsts other than a rubber track, rotory valve, exhaust valve and then the rev platform.
@JESSEJAMES322

Nice video. How much does each machine weigh? My 96 v-max with elec. start and reverse weighed 605 lbs if I remember right. The front was soooo heavy and the back a bit too light, I tried to sit as far back as I could. It could`ve used larger lugs on the track. You should try and find a vintage, late 60s early 70s, snowmobile to ride this next season, then the 97, then the 2023. I`m sure you will LYAO! LOL Take care

Triumph was the XLT rebadged and put on the Evolved chassis. The XC600/XLT was a monoblock instead of the individual jugs on the XCR/Storms. The Xtra 10 chassis was loose and fast through the corners until the rider gave out. And both you failed to mention the the one trait where the old Polaris triples beat the shit out of the new 650 and 850: The exhaust note. Truly a unique sound. I always thought the 3-1 header of the monoblock (XLT/XC) sounded more tuned than the XCR/Storm but they were both nice. As Snowmobiler Magazine said back in the day, it comes complete with exhaust by Mozart.
