We cleaned them and they turned out pretty good but then Cody Doughty sent me these great JDM headlights for my Subaru and I HAD to use them. The difference is amazing when I drive at night so thank you Cody. I hope this video also redeems me for the last video I did on soldering and shows that I really can solder wires together and do a decent job of rebuilding a harness and figuring out how to wire these things up.

Hi Eric, I enjoyed your video on the conversion to JDM projectors on your Legacy Wagon! I know it's too late for your Subaru now, but a couple of us Legacy fans at the SL-i forum have developed and commercialized a set of plug-and-play conversion harnesses to make changing to JDM projectors on any '95-'99 USDM Legacy a snap! No cutting, no splicing, no soldering, and they are hand-assembled in USA with quality wire made in USA and genuine Japanese JDM plugs. From Legacy fans, for Legacy fans :)

Hey I don't know if you still have that info but I have some JDM projectors but I have USDM wiring harness in the car I'm trying to do what he did in the video but I am afraid to do it and I was wondering if there is any adapter for that that is basically USDM to JDM and I've also got LEDs that have the wire going into the harness and I don't know if I'll need that so I'm hoping for a bit of help I know it's been 11 years and the chances of you having any of that info is slim or being able to send me any links to any of those adapters that I'm looking for but I have LEDs that fit directly into my USDM headlight harness and I'm wondering if I'll need to do anything extra

Good comments here. Just wanted to add that crimp connections are just as good as solder connections if not better. Only crimp connections are used in aircraft wiring for example because solder connections can get "brittle" over time (=many years). It is important to make sure that the stripped wire ends are clean (not oxydized) and use the right tool for the job. If you need to seal the crimp splices, you can apply RTV in the open ends. Solder connections are fine for cars is you do it right.

Hi Eric. Your headlights are not funcioning proprerly because, on projector style headlights you have to modify the stalk so the low beams stay ON with the high beams on. This is done by removing the low beam wire on the stalk and connecting it directly to the wire that provides power for the stalk. Keep the good work Eric!

Great video again. The crimp splices (butt splices) work too. As far as soldering goes, I have done that for a while say 45 years or so (I believe that I just dated myself, o well), make sure that there are no sharp wire/strand ends sticking out that could pierce the shrink tubing and cause a short circuit further down the road. The shrink tubing is not very strong.

15:58 high beam on running light on. This is during the first test. 16:35 taping the extra wire off "some of you might be saying 'Eric use something different' I don't think there is anything going to this." 17:46 high beams on, running light off. The extra wire is related to the high beam circuit. When doing jobs like this being observant is key.

Eric when you first wired it up you had running lights when the high beams were on. After you extended the other wire and hooked that up you do not have running lights when the high beams are on. I think that is what the other red wire is for, high beam running lights.

because the cables themselves are one continuous wire. The crimped portion on the end is crimped with a special tool that you probably dont have. Just twisting in a wire gives more resistance (i.e. less voltage, dimmer light) than you would have if you soldered. And resistance causes heat. If it gets high enough, it can start fires and ruin things. If you want to do something like that, go get the soldering iron and solder, it's less than $15.

Good work in the soldering, it turned out better than I thought it would. You should check out those butt splice connectors (I think that's what they're called) insulated with shrinking tube and a bit of hot glue at the ends. Do a Google image search for "butt splice with hot glue" and you'll see which ones I mean. It's easier and faster than soldering but more expensive. I used them when my power window motor came with the wrong connector, and they made a nice tight seal around the cables.

"Some of you might be saying 'Eric use something different'." When you did the first test the running light and the high beam was on, when you changed it around only the High beam would be on, and the running light wasn't. In the end it works the way it should, but the wire you capped off was part of the high beam circuit.

Wondered the same myself, my father had a Beetle he bought new in 72 her in new Zealand (rhd), about twenty years later the garage that did his safety inspections noticed the German lenses and he had to replace them. VW just sold them like that over here and didn't worry about it. Cheap fix though as you just replaced the glass, didn't go yellow either.

I believe you are mistaken. A good solder joint is when it appears smooth and shiny. If you are soldering wires, the wire outlines should be visible to indicte a good solder. Shiny also indicates that it's NOT a brittle joint.

Yes, except when you use the flashers. They are usually two fillaments in one bulb on most stock lights, and then it wouldn't make any sense to have them both on (they would probably burn out much faster due to the extra heat). So cars are usually wired that way: The flashers turn on the highbeams additionally to the low beams, while the low beams turn off when the high beams are switched on.

Eric I am about done doing any soldering as I use crimp connectors with built in heat shrink, the same kind that come with every GM repair connector, if it is good enough for GM it works for me. Dodge and Ford repair pigtails come with shrink tubing and bare brass crimps, harder to crimp right without the correct tool so those get the same as GMs too.

Hi Eric. Thanks for all the vids btw. A wee tip. You shold stagger the cuts in the wires just in case there is any chaffing between them if the solder joints or wires become exposed. If the joints are not side by side, there will be less likelyhood of a short.

Eric did you ever check the positioning of the headlights? Because in Japan they drive on the other side of the road and you might be blinding everyone coming the other way.

I think it depends on the manufacturer. I'm in the US and my Nissan uses both the low beam and high beam when the high beams are selected. The fog lights turn off when high beams are selected and when the headlights are off. There is a separate switch for the fog lights, yet they cannot be operated with the high beams on, or while the headlights are off.

damn man, that looks great!, I'm going to retro fit a set of oem projector headlights from a 2010 bmw 3 series into my 1997 celica, but since I dont want to spend more money buying the wiring harness, im going to make my own plug so im going to need to open the headlights and remove the plugs to install my own, and then comes the job of cutting and fiber glassing the whole front end of the car, then in spring im going to redesign the front bumper and make it match better with the headlights

The wires you tapped off supplied power to the parking lights while in high beam mode. Notice in your first test you had parking lights only with high beams, and in your final set up you have parking lights only with low beams. Parking lights should be on regardless of whether its in high or low beams.

When the solder is dull it can mean several things; here are a few. One, a "lazy" rework was performed and the old exisintg solder was not removed / thoroughly removed. Heat was simply applied to reflow the solder. Two, too much heat was applied and caused the solder to oxidize. As we all know, oxidzation does no good to electrical connections & components.
@bmxfelon420
@bmxfelon420 12 лет назад
it could loosen over time from vibration and start oxidizing and getting more resistance from being loose, potentially causing an electrical fire, or burning up the wires at least.

Canada, and only flip up headlights on NEW models were allowed to be glass. Some models were carried over from 1989 to up to as far as 1994 using glass, but they weren't a new generation of car. All of the cars you stated used glass instead of plastic in the US only. Every other market got plastic.

It depends. On H4, yes. But on H7-H7 or H7-H1 or any other "twin" head-lamp, they're usually both on. 'Cause the whole structure of the headlamp is waaaay different than on an H4. Eric should have put in a relay, to have them both working.

I think he is meaning the running lights, not the low beams when he is pointing out that they go out. The first time you wired it the running light came on with the high beam. The second time the running lights turned off when the high beam turned on.

"Any time you see a nice shiny joint like that, it's good. " ... Couldn't be more wrong! A shiny solder is called a cold solder joint and it means that not enough heat was applied to really make a strong bond. If you make a cold joint just apply more heat under the wires and you will notice the solder penetrate the wires and become dull instead of shiny; only then you will have a properly soldered joint.

97 legacy headlights will fit in a 1998. I know the 1997 are one piece with the sidemarkers integrated. Only thing different Is if you get projector style vs stock halogen

I would suggest you put some clear film over them (like window tint but 100% transparent) to prevent these from oxidizing like the old ones. Also I believe that in this headlight design with separate high beams the running lights should still work when high beams on, but that's not a huge issue. Are JDM headlights producing symmetric beams (same level on each side) like USDM ones? UK and EU headlamps have the light on the driver side pointing lower by the mirror design.
